SAFIRE: Safety-Critical Benchmark for Fine-grained Fire and Smoke Understanding in Multimodal LLMs

SAFIRE, an 83K-image fire and smoke benchmark, shows open-source multimodal LLMs average only 61.9% accuracy on safety-critical fire reasoning.

SAFIRE is a large-scale benchmark for fire-smoke understanding in multimodal LLMs with 83K captioned images across 20 scenarios and 193K multiple-choice VQA questions spanning 10 evaluation dimensions from perception to higher-order reasoning. Annotations were built via a GPT-5.4-assisted multi-stage pipeline with MLLM majority voting. Ten open-source MLLMs (8B-38B) average 61.9% accuracy, exposing major gaps in safety-critical reasoning. Adapting vision encoders on 7% of the domain data raises fire-scene classification from 20.1% to 64.5%.

The 12 Best Extended Detection & Response (XDR) Platforms, Compared and Priced

Buyer's guide compares 12 XDR platforms, favoring Microsoft Defender XDR, Stellar Cyber and CrowdStrike, and warns ingestion pricing inflates costs.

The article compares 12 extended detection and response platforms, distinguishing native XDR (CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Cortex XDR, Microsoft Defender XDR, SentinelOne) from open XDR (Stellar Cyber, Arctic Wolf, Rapid7). It argues data ingestion pricing, not per-endpoint fees, is the main budget risk and should be modeled before signing. It repeats the consolidation note that Sophos acquired Secureworks for approximately $859 million in February 2025, and flags that ExtraHop is NDR rather than full XDR.

The 12 Best Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) Solutions, Compared and Priced

An editorial scorecard ranks 12 EDR platforms, with CrowdStrike and SentinelOne tied at 8.6/10 and telemetry retention identified as the hidden cost driver.

CrowdStrike and SentinelOne tie at 8.6/10, with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint close behind at 8.5 and described as effectively free in Microsoft 365 E5 estates. The guide argues that telemetry retention, not per-endpoint price, drives real cost, with fully-priced quotes frequently diverging 2-3x from headline rates. Managed detection offerings, including Cynet's bundled 24/7 SOC, factor into the buyer-fit rankings.

Bisonal Malware Used in Attacks Against Russia and South Korea

Unit 42 details a Bisonal malware variant, active since 2014, targeting Russian and South Korean defense organizations via PDF-disguised spearphishing emails.

In early May, Unit 42 discovered a campaign delivering a Bisonal malware variant against at least one Russian communications security and cryptography company and one unidentified organization in South Korea. The variant, in the wild since at least 2014, introduces a new C2 cipher and rewritten networking and persistence code, with only 14 samples collected to date. Attackers spoofed Russian state corporation Rostec in spearphishing emails carrying an executable disguised with a PDF icon; the dropper decrypts an RC4-encrypted DLL and establishes persistence via a registry Run key. Bisonal has been used since 2013 against government, military, and defense targets in South Korea, Russia, Japan, and India, alongside successors Bioazih and Dexbia.

Breaking the Vision-Action Shortcut: Latent Interface Training for Generalizable Robotics Foundation Models

Latent Interface Training improves robot foundation model generalization by constraining visual conditioning, boosting LIBERO-Plus success up to 10.7 points.

The paper identifies vision-action shortcuts where robot policies exploit task-irrelevant visual cues that fail under distribution shift. Latent Interface Training (LIT) first trains an action expert conditioned on language, robot state, and terminal SE(3) end-effector poses without images, then constrains visual input through a pose-supervised latent interface. Across four VLA and world-action architectures (Pi0.5, MolmoAct2, FAST-WAM, ImageWAM), LIT improves LIBERO-Plus success by 3.87-10.70 percentage points. Real-world tests show 13.30-16.70 percentage-point gains under unseen cameras, lighting, and distractors.

Feature Recovery for Object Understanding After Irreversible Fire Damage

TRACE benchmark with 21.4K scenes studies post-fire object understanding; a Feature Recovery Module improves degraded-image retrieval by 12.5% and material recovery by 20.1%.

The paper introduces TRACE, a transformation-aware benchmark with 21.4K real-image-grounded synthetic scenes, 499 object identities across 189 categories, and five tasks covering degraded-object detection, pristine-state recovery, material recovery, description generation, and functional reasoning. Existing models degrade sharply: RF-DETR mAP falls 71% relative from least to most severe level, and InternVL3.5 retrieval R@1 drops from 93.85 to 28.11. The proposed Feature Recovery Module maps degraded encoder features to pristine-aligned representations while keeping the host model frozen, averaging relative gains of 12.5% for retrieval and 20.1% for material recovery across VLM hosts and severity levels.

Palo Alto Unit 42 identified a Kuwait government organization's webpage injected with hidden HTML referencing image paths on domains (microsofte-update.com, learn-service.com) tied to xHunt/Hisoka C2 infrastructure. How Fragile Is Safety Alignment at Frontier Scale? A Single-Direction Attack on a 320B MoE
