Anthropic caught Russia-linked spies using Claude in hacking operations

Anthropic disrupted Russia-linked APT29 using Claude in espionage against 20+ organizations, including Ukrainian government targets and a military drone maker whose vision SDK was stolen.

Anthropic's threat report covering December 2025 to August 2026 attributes the campaign to Midnight Blizzard (APT29/Cozy Bear, Storm-2945), which it links to Russia's SVR. The group compromised hotel Wi-Fi providers, altered DNS records to redirect travelers, accessed mailboxes at two drone-component manufacturers, and stole a proprietary SDK for a drone vision system, which it reverse-engineered using Claude. The group also used Claude to monitor whether security products detected its implants and to modify and redeploy flagged artifacts. The report also covers ShinyHunters affiliates using AI for credential scanning and extortion, a Chinese-speaking group's autonomous zero-day research, and a French-speaking hacktivist.

Actively Exploited Oracle WebLogic Flaw Lets Unauthenticated Attackers Access Critical Data

CISA added actively exploited Oracle WebLogic flaw CVE-2026-21962 (CVSS 10.0) to its KEV catalog, letting unauthenticated attackers access or modify critical data.

CISA added CVE-2026-21962, a CVSS 10.0 improper access control flaw in Oracle HTTP Server and Oracle WebLogic Server Proxy Plug-in, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, citing evidence of active exploitation. Oracle shipped patches in January 2026, and GreyNoise, CloudSEK, and SOCRadar have since reported exploitation attempts, including a lone IP scanning multiple WebLogic, Ivanti, GNU InetUtils, and GLPI vulnerabilities. The flaw is also among several exploited by a China-linked actor delivering the SNOWLIGHT downloader to government and commercial infrastructure in more than 100 countries. Federal civilian agencies must apply fixes by August 27, 2026 under BOD 26-04.

Mythos Vulnerability Firehose Hits a Human Bottleneck

Analysis of Project Glasswing findings shows only a fraction of discovered vulnerabilities have reached disclosure and even fewer are fixed.

Dark Reading reports that an analysis of Project Glasswing findings shows only a fraction of the vulnerabilities discovered by the program have reached disclosure, and an even smaller number have been fixed. The article examines how the volume of findings from the discovery program is bottlenecked by limited human triage and remediation capacity. The piece highlights growing tension between high-volume vulnerability discovery and the industry's ability to process, disclose and patch reports.

SAFIRE: Safety-Critical Benchmark for Fine-grained Fire and Smoke Understanding in Multimodal LLMs

SAFIRE, an 83K-image fire and smoke benchmark, shows open-source multimodal LLMs average only 61.9% accuracy on safety-critical fire reasoning.

SAFIRE is a large-scale benchmark for fire-smoke understanding in multimodal LLMs with 83K captioned images across 20 scenarios and 193K multiple-choice VQA questions spanning 10 evaluation dimensions from perception to higher-order reasoning. Annotations were built via a GPT-5.4-assisted multi-stage pipeline with MLLM majority voting. Ten open-source MLLMs (8B-38B) average 61.9% accuracy, exposing major gaps in safety-critical reasoning. Adapting vision encoders on 7% of the domain data raises fire-scene classification from 20.1% to 64.5%.

Product showcase: Is this image real? Slop or Not investigates

Slop or Not is an offline iPhone/Mac app using on-device Apple Neural Engine models to detect AI-generated images, text and SynthID watermarks.

Slop or Not is an AI text and image detector for iPhone and Mac that runs entirely offline via the Apple Neural Engine, with no account required. It returns AI-probability scores and checks for Google's invisible SynthID watermark to verify AI-origin images on-device. The hands-on review found strong detection of obvious AI images, a borderline 50.4% AI call on a realistic one, and correct identification of real photos, citing survey data that 85% of people struggle to distinguish AI-generated content.

FrostyGoop’s Zoom-In: A Closer Look into the Malware Artifacts, Behaviors and Network Communications

Unit 42 dissects FrostyGoop OT malware, which sent Modbus TCP commands to disrupt heating for 600+ apartment buildings in Ukraine.

Palo Alto Unit 42 analyzed new FrostyGoop/BUSTLEBERM samples, the ninth known ICS-centric malware, first used against a Ukrainian municipal energy company by sending Modbus TCP commands to ENCO control devices. The attack caused a two-day heating outage affecting over 600 apartment buildings during sub-zero temperatures. The Go-compiled malware accepts Modbus register operations and timing parameters via command-line arguments or a JSON configuration file, uses an obscure open-source Modbus library, and checks the Windows BeingDebugged flag to evade debuggers. Unit 42 telemetry recorded over 1 million Modbus TCP devices exposed to the internet between September and October 2024.
