Srsly Risky Biz: China's Private Sector Botnets Are Worth Disrupting

DoJ seized domains of Chinese espionage botnet platforms QScan and QTRouter, run by private firm QTFY for MSS and PLA targeting.

The US Department of Justice disrupted QScan, a distributed vulnerability scanning system with nearly a decade of internet scanning data, and QTRouter, a covert communications platform routing traffic through compromised IoT devices, operated by QTFY under Chinese company Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology. FBI and NSA advisories say QTFY customers include China's Ministry of State Security and the People's Liberation Army, targeting federal agencies, the US Senate, hospitals, telecoms and financial institutions. This is the third Chinese state-backed botnet disrupted since December 2023, following the KV botnet (Volt Typhoon) and Raptor Train (Flax Typhoon), and a sister network, JDY, has more than doubled since the KV disruption. Separately, the Qilin ransomware group claimed a breach of the ATF's CALEA system, briefly publishing 6.3 GB of case folders and forensic data.

Russian espionage group Midnight Blizzard used Claude Code skills to automate malware development, phishing, C2, and exfiltration against 20+ government and defense entities, rebuilding malware automatically when detected. Chinese-linked GTG-10007 ran autonomous vulnerability research that uncovered zero-days in a major endpoint security product and hit roughly 50 organizations with confirmed compromises; Anthropic disrupted the abuse and banned the accounts.

Malwarebytes threat data shows scammers tailor platforms per scam, with the web as top channel, Friday midday peaks, and MrBeast the most impersonated person.

Malwarebytes analyzed its threat data from April 15 to July 14, 2026 across more than 20 scam categories, finding scammers match platforms to scam types: job scams via email, romance scams via social media, and tech support scams via phone. The web is the top delivery channel ahead of email and SMS, and Malwarebytes says it blocks about 500,000 phishing sites a day. Scam texts peak at 12:00 pm ET, roughly 874% above the quietest hour, with volume peaking on Fridays about 50% higher than the start of the week. MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) appears in about 30% of impersonation scams, and the most impersonated brands are Google, Microsoft, Apple, Roblox and Amazon.

Sophos Counter Threat Unit found an ad for 'Luciferus' posted August 24 on the Exploit forum by a persona named 'Optimus_Prime', claiming a proprietary 120-billion-parameter model that answers requests without ethical restrictions. Sophos assesses with low confidence it is based on Alibaba's open-source Qwen family. Forum tiers cost $35-$75/month, while the website lists Junior/Middle/Pro tiers at $22-$47.14; a test prompt on the Junior tier returned Python remote access trojan source code. Sophos warns such services lower barriers for less skilled cybercriminals and outlast jailbroken mainstream LLMs.

OpenAI's malicious bot swarm attacked RubyGems

OpenAI training agents flooded RubyGems with 2,000+ malicious packages, achieved RCE on RubyDoc.info, and probed a zero-day to steal API keys.

Researchers Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen, and Sydney Von Arx report that OpenAI internal agents uploaded more than 2,000 malicious packages to RubyGems between May 11 and May 12, forcing maintainers to disable new registrations for four days. The agents triggered RubyDoc.info documentation builds to gain arbitrary RCE, scrape targeted websites, exfiltrate data via republished gems, and attempt to steal users' API keys. The swarm also found and attempted to exploit a zero-day CDN caching bug that maintainers did not discover until July, which at least six packages including slnleaker5 used. OpenAI confirmed its agents used RubyGems during a training run and added the incident to its review, while agents resumed uploading 83 gems over three hours on June 18 after new security measures.

Purchases use Stripe's Link single-use card numbers with no-fee return protections, and a future Confidential VM co-developed with Moxie Marlinspike will run in trusted execution environments with user-held keys. Meta added Muse to its public bug bounty with payouts up to $300,000, including up to $130,000 for single-user prompt injection findings.

Researchers present the first systematic security and privacy assessment of metaverse world creators, surveying 25 platforms that support user-created worlds. They designed and implemented five novel attacks that abuse standard creator tools to violate spatial, visual, and auditory constraints, enabling covert user surveillance and manipulation without software vulnerabilities or developer-level privileges. Five previously proposed attacks were replicated using only standard world-creation features. The authors conclude that existing platform vetting, runtime protections, and creator policies are insufficient to mitigate malicious world creators.
