Deceptive Android Apps Exploit Google Play Early Access to Evade Reviews

Bitdefender reports deceptive Google Play Early Access apps use deepfake celebrity ads and fake rewards to lure users into ad-fraud schemes.

Bitdefender research describes widespread abuse of Google Play's Early Access program, where developers publish deceptive apps that avoid public ratings and reviews. The apps are promoted through TikTok and Facebook ads promising cash rewards, PayPal payouts, crypto earnings, or gift cards, often using deepfakes of celebrities, but users receive only aggressive advertising. Examples include 'Chicken Road' and 'Ice Fishing' casino-style games plus trademark abuse such as apps named 'Grand Theft Auto V (Early Access)' that are later renamed. No malware is delivered, but some listings show thousands of installs.

Meta debuts its Muse AI agent. Will consumers trust it?

Meta launched Muse, a consumer AI agent powered by Muse Spark that connects to users' apps to execute tasks like emailing, booking travel, and payments.

Meta introduced Muse, a personal AI agent for US users that connects to email, calendars, payments, shopping, and other services to execute tasks such as booking travel, lowering bills, and completing purchases via Link by Stripe. The agent runs in a dedicated Muse Secure VM with a separate Sentinel agent kept apart at the system level, and Meta claims it cannot see passwords or payment data and does not share conversations with ad systems. Muse is free to start, with Power ($20/month) and Maximum ($100/month) subscription tiers, and is available on the web, iOS, Android, and WhatsApp, with Meta AI glasses support planned. The launch follows Meta's $18 billion multistate consumer-harms settlement and comes as rivals like Gemini Spark and Claude Cowork push agentic AI.

Can We Stop The Ads? Taxonomy and Characterization of Smartphone Splash Ads and Existing Countermeasures

Study of 108 ad-defense implementations finds only one tool blocked splash-ad navigation across ten popular apps, and it required Accessibility permission.

The paper taxonomizes smartphone splash ads — full-screen ads at app launch that trick users into trigger mechanisms such as moving the phone — and analyzes 108 documented advertising defenses for deployment barriers. Many defenses require device rooting, jailbreaking, runtime code injection, or application modification; others need extra permissions, rule maintenance, compilation, or payment. In evaluating 13 configurations of 11 tools across 10 popular apps, only one prevented ad-triggered navigation across all ten apps, requiring Accessibility permission and leaving ads visible roughly one second before dismissal. Documented harms include delayed emergency response, driver distraction, and degraded accessibility for vision-impaired users.

VU#859658: Skullcandy Dime 3 wireless earbuds contain an unauthenticated Bluetooth pairing vulnerability

Skullcandy Dime 3 earbuds (CVE-2025-20701) accept Bluetooth pairings without owner consent, letting in-range attackers hijack audio or capture microphone; no firmware update path exists.

CERT/CC's VU#859658 describes CVE-2025-20701 in the Airoha Bluetooth audio SDK, present in Skullcandy Dime 3 (Model S2DCW) firmware 1.0.0.28. A direct Bluetooth Classic pairing request with no PIN or physical confirmation completes via NoInputNoOutput, adding the attacker's device as trusted. Attackers in radio range can hijack the A2DP audio session, access the Hands-Free/Headset profile, and capture live microphone audio. Firmware 1.0.0.30 contains the effective patch, but Skullcandy says the Dime 3 does not support app-based firmware updates, leaving existing units unpatchable.

Crypto customers targeted by scammers after email marketing provider breach

Attackers exploited a Brevo SAML SSO flaw to access 138 accounts and phish crypto customers of Trezor, CoinTracking, and BitBox.

An attacker exploited a flaw in Brevo's SAML SSO handling to access 138 customer accounts on September 10; six accounts were used to send phishing emails and contacts were exported from 43 accounts. Crypto firms Trezor, CoinTracking, and BitBox confirmed customers received phishing emails, with Trezor warning roughly 347,000 newsletter subscribers. The Trezor-themed email cited a fabricated STM32 microcontroller entropy bug and urged recipients to enter wallet backups through a malicious link. Exported contact lists could fuel future targeted phishing attacks.

LG accused of 'egregious invasion of privacy' over TV data collection

Gamers Nexus alleges LG smart TVs record audio and generate transcripts in standby while harvesting location, network, and device data for LG's ads business.

Researchers at Gamers Nexus claim LG smart TVs continued capturing audio after voice recognition activated, including in standby, producing plaintext transcripts, some stored locally and sent after reconnection. Testing reportedly found collection of IP addresses, location data, nearby Wi-Fi network details, and enumeration of unpaired local devices such as phones, routers, and PCs, with data flowing to LG Ads Solutions. The team is coordinating responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities including an alleged remote code execution flaw. LG says its TVs do not collect, record, or store ambient conversations and that voice recognition is optional.

Don't Trust the Super-App: A Case Study of Russia's Max

Researchers show super-apps like Russia's Max can silently capture mini-app UI, storage, network traffic, and authentication, enabling untraceable user impersonation.

The paper challenges the assumption that super-apps are trusted intermediaries, citing WeChat's passive cross-mini-app tracking, Russia's Max's entanglement with state prosecution of online speech, and Iran's Bale operating during a prolonged internet shutdown. Using Max as a case study, the authors demonstrate that a super-app can capture mini-app UI, read and write mini-app local storage, inject arbitrary JavaScript into mini-app runtimes, mediate network traffic, and control authentication context, enabling silent user impersonation without trace. They argue these capabilities are inherent to the super-app architecture and call for mobile OS and app store interventions to close the blind spot.

Free streaming boxes may be routing criminal traffic through your home

Researchers found SuperBox streaming boxes and the CyberFlix TV app enroll home connections into the Popanet residential proxy network, routing criminal traffic.

Researchers found that SuperBox devices and the CyberFlix TV app, distributed through SuperBox's custom app store, contain Popanet proxy functionality that registers the device with servers controlled by the proxy operator, enrolling household connections into residential proxy networks. The reported configuration weakens Android safeguards with exposed ADB access, root-level privileges without authentication, and removal of app-install protections. Plume's research warns these proxy networks can also function as malware-delivery platforms, and the FBI notes foreign entities use residential proxies to conceal activity such as credential stuffing and account abuse. Android car head units infected with proxy botnet malware through built-in software updaters

Kaspersky found malware delivered via car head unit updaters, attributed to the MoYu Group's BADBOX operation, recruiting devices into a proxy botnet.
