The report-to-click ratio increased from 1.3 at three months to 1.8 at 12 months, framing employees as an active detection channel. Departmental analysis showed Construction had the highest cumulative click rate (41.31%) and Health the lowest report rate (13.17%), supporting more targeted training.

Phishing Attacks Serve Browser-in-the-Browser Pages, Rogue RMM Persistence

Phishing emails with browser-in-the-browser fake Adobe pages trick users into installing rogue ScreenConnect clients granting persistent remote access.

Huntress SOC investigated two August incidents where phishing links led to fake CAPTCHA checks and Adobe PDF Reader lures rendered as browser-in-the-browser (BiTB) pages spoofing legitimate domains like get.adobe.com. Victims downloaded what they believed was Acrobat Reader but actually installed ScreenConnect.ClientSetup.exe from attacker infrastructure, yielding two rogue ScreenConnect clients with service-based persistence. The attacker used cmd.exe and curl to stage a second client connecting to 144.172.115.59, leveraged a ScreenConnect Trial Relay domain for stealth, and ran HideCursor.exe as a defense-evasion binary. Incident 2 arrived via AT&T Office@Hand (RingCentral), with both chains stopped before broader impact.

Hackers Impersonate CEOs in 1 Million Emails to Trick Employees Into $50,000 Payments

A BEC campaign sent over one million fake CEO invoice emails, mostly to US firms, urging ~$50,000 ACH transfers to attacker accounts.

Microsoft analysts tracked a business email compromise campaign that sent more than one million messages between August 3 and 5, with 87.7% targeting US recipients. Emails impersonated CEOs, CFOs, and presidents and carried fake ServiceNow-branded subscription invoices directing accounts-payable staff to make ACH transfers of nearly $50,000 to attacker-controlled accounts. No malicious attachments or malware were used, and researchers observed signs consistent with AI-assisted template development. Lookalike domains such as service-nowinc[.]com and third-party delivery accounts were used, while named firms like ServiceNow showed no evidence of compromise.

A rant about phishing: It's not the user's fault (and not DNS either)

Hackers Pose as IT Support to Hijack Microsoft 365 Accounts With Fake Passkey Alerts

Microsoft warns of vishing campaigns by Storm-3121 and Storm-3032 hijacking Microsoft 365 accounts via fake passkey alerts, adding attacker-controlled MFA and exfiltrating cloud data.

Microsoft Security Research has tracked the campaign since May 2026: callers posing as IT helpdesk staff tell employees to urgently update passkeys, MFA, or SSO settings via domains such as add-passkey[.]com and contoso[.]add-passkey[.]com. The lures lead to adversary-in-the-middle phishing or device-code authentication flows that yield credentials, session tokens, or OAuth tokens, after which attackers enroll their own MFA methods for persistence and run Microsoft Graph reconnaissance. They then collect SharePoint, OneDrive, and sometimes Exchange Online data at deliberately low rates (often under 1,000 files or messages per hour), with python-httpx seen in high-volume file access. Microsoft attributes initial access tradecraft to Storm-3121 and Storm-3032, linked respectively to ShinyHunters/Falcon and BlackFile/Helix extortion operations.

Cybercriminals are building phishing pages that exist only inside victims’ browsers

Barracuda details a DocuSign-themed phishing campaign that renders login pages locally via blob URLs, abusing genuine Microsoft OAuth and Teams infrastructure.

Barracuda researchers describe a phishing campaign that starts with DocuSign-themed emails carrying calendar invites pointing to genuine Microsoft OAuth endpoints, then routes victims through Microsoft Teams to a resource hosted on cdn.bloom[.]io. The login page is assembled entirely inside the victim's browser from a blob URL, registers a service worker, and runs inside a sandboxed iframe that receives live instructions from the attacker's backend. Hidden command-and-control configuration indicates the page is part of a centrally managed phishing platform that can be updated and steered across many victims. Barracuda recommends phishing-resistant MFA such as FIDO2 keys or passkeys, monitoring of OAuth flows and redirect chains, and behavior-based identity controls rather than URL blocklisting.

IT Help Desk Impersonation Lets Hackers Bypass MFA

Risky Bulletin: BEC campaign steals €35 million from French notaries

Hackers stole over €35 million from 500+ French notary offices in a four-year BEC campaign; ANSSI spent two years helping evict the attackers.

A business email compromise campaign breached more than 500 French notary offices — about 7% of all French notaries per the Conseil Supérieur du Notariat — over four years, stealing more than €35 million by phishing initial access and silently modifying wire transfer details. France's cybersecurity agency ANSSI worked for two years behind the scenes to help notaries remove the persistent attackers, who had deep access; officials also feared hackers could issue fake notarized acts such as marriage certificates or forged real estate deals. No forged documents have been found so far, but notaries have added two-factor authentication and in-person requirements for banking details, and banks added extra checks in 2024. The newsletter also notes other incidents, including a $320 million Bitcoin extraction from Blockstream's Liquid Network and a JetBrains Cadence breach via TeamCity servers.

Huntress investigated an August 18, 2026 adversary-in-the-middle attack using the Knight Office phishing kit, which captured Microsoft 365 session tokens via a DocuSign-style lure routed through a Monday.com tracking link and a compromised Joomla site. After token capture, the actor enrolled an unauthorized host in Microsoft Entra ID and bound a Windows Hello for Business key credential to the account. The kit's operator console, found at IP 104.37.188.94, is built on Python Flask and hosts at least 25 .vu phishing domains. Telemetry links the kit to at least nine token-replay logins in two weeks and roughly 700 reported lure emails since April.

FBI raises alarm over deceptive phishing campaign targeting prominent people

The FBI warns of an ongoing OAuth consent phishing campaign granting attackers persistent access to high-profile victims' cloud accounts without passwords.

The FBI says attackers impersonate government officials, journalists and event coordinators on commercial messaging apps to trick prominent individuals, their families and acquaintances into authorizing malicious OAuth applications on Microsoft or Google cloud services. Once approved, attackers gain persistent access to emails, files and other sensitive data; the access survives password changes and bypasses MFA, and can only be revoked by invalidating the OAuth token in security settings. The campaign has been tracked since late 2025, and the FBI advises independently verifying senders and granting access only to trusted applications.

TerminalFix Uses Fake Cloudflare CAPTCHAs to Deploy Reverse

Microsoft details TerminalFix, a ClickFix variant using fake Cloudflare CAPTCHAs to make users run PowerShell payloads with reverse-tunnel implants.

Microsoft disclosed TerminalFix campaigns that direct users to run commands in Windows Terminal or PowerShell instead of the Run dialog, increasing the chance multi-line scripts execute. Compromised websites serve fake Cloudflare CAPTCHA verifications; the resulting PowerShell command downloads a ZIP with legitimate LockScreenContentServer.exe and rogue dui70.dll for DLL sideloading, retrieves payloads hidden in PNG images from attacker domains, persists via Registry Run keys and scheduled tasks, and performs domain trust and Active Directory reconnaissance. A Python-based reverse-tunnel implant (client.py) tunnels arbitrary TCP traffic over an encrypted WebSocket to gitnow[.]dev:443, giving attackers network-level proxy access that could enable privilege escalation, security-tool tampering, data theft or ransomware. Microsoft recommends AppLocker restrictions, PowerShell script block logging and ClickFix awareness training.

ShinyHunters taunts ReliaQuest after its own employee falls for social engineering attack

ShinyHunters mocked ReliaQuest after a fake-SSO social engineering call gave attackers brief view-only access to its identity dashboard via one employee.

ReliaQuest confirmed that on August 22, 2026, a caller posing as a named security team member directed an employee to a fake single sign-on page, capturing a password and an approved MFA push notification. The attackers, linked to extortion group ShinyHunters, obtained brief view-only access to the identity dashboard, with no applications, systems, or customer data reached and no persistence established. ShinyHunters posted screenshots claiming access to a ReliaQuest Okta SSO account on its leak site on August 23, contradicting the company's account. The incident followed ReliaQuest's warning about a ShinyHunters campaign using .claims TLD domains to impersonate legal, help desk, and IT staff.
