$536 and 8 Hours: AI Learns to Attack a Different PLC

Forescout used Claude to port a WAGO PLC exploit for $536 in 8 hours, and an AI-generated payload later permanently bricked the test device.

Forescout researchers used Claude Code with Ghidra, terminal access, and physical hardware to port CVE-2021-31886, a pre-authentication buffer overflow in the Nucleus FTP server, from a WAGO 750-852 PLC to the WAGO 750-831 without source code or debugger access. The final RCE development stage cost $535.74 in API fees over an 8-hour, 32-minute session (2.6k input and 1.3M output tokens) and required heavy researcher guidance. Claude produced working ICMP and UDP beacon exploits in 12 minutes after identifying that normal FTP command completion was overwriting its shellcode, fixed by omitting the CRLF terminator. A follow-up session extending the payloads toward a C2 implant wrote to flash-mapped memory and permanently bricked the PLC, underscoring the risks of autonomous agents operating against physical infrastructure.

Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month

Two developers built a fully OpenGL ES 3.0 compliant Linux GPU driver for the M4 Mac Mini in one month via clean-room reverse engineering.

Niklas and the author reverse engineered Apple's AGX GPU firmware ABI and user-space components in about a month, a process that normally takes years, producing an OpenGL ES 3.0 conformant driver fast enough to run Minecraft at 200fps on an M4 Mac Mini. The work was done transparently using hypervisor traces without examining Apple binaries, following clean-room practices, and included a custom shader compiler, command stream builder, and a full Linux kernel driver for the firmware ABI. The A18 Pro firmware ABI proved significantly more complex than the M1's, with 1.5x as many structs and twice as many pointers. All experiments and provenance evidence were published in public agx-re repositories.

Scaling Verification of Cryptographic Software with Aeneas, Rust, and Lean

Galileo's new Signal Authentication Service (SAS) on the E6-C signal directly authenticates ranging measurements, closing a gap left by OSNMA, which only protects navigation data. Researchers built a snapshot software receiver implementing a simplified SAS protocol and computed an authenticated receiver clock bias from recordings of both SAS-capable satellites, collected with a Septentrio SDR prototype. The results demonstrate feasible authenticated timing ahead of full SAS operational deployment.

Efficient Branch-and-Bound Testing and Verification of zkVMs

ZEBRA verifies zkVM constraint systems via branch-and-bound cardinality counting, finding 11 zero-day bugs across five real-world zkVMs and running 51.5x faster than SMT verification.

ZEBRA reduces zkVM correctness to a solution-set cardinality problem requiring that each constraint system admit exactly one valid execution trace, eliminating redundancies like null-row padding and non-deterministic permutations before counting. It lifts analysis from finite-field witnesses to an integer interval lattice, exploiting that constraints across 5 real-world zkVMs use only 14.0% of theoretical connectivity capacity on average, enabling tight interval propagation. A parallel branch-and-bound search produces concrete counterexamples or certifies absence of violations within a bounded region. ZEBRA discovers 11 zero-day bugs (6 independently confirmed, 3 fixed), is 51.5x faster than SMT-based verification, and verifies 16.5 percentage points more instances.

MicroHasTEE: Bare-Metal Haskell for Type-Level Peripheral Ownership on Armv8-M

MicroHasTEE is a multiparty Haskell framework that models both TrustZone firmware images as participants in a single typed program, using type-level capability ledgers to track peripheral acquisition, configuration, transfer, and finalization. MicroHs compiles the shared program twice to produce separate bare-metal Secure and Non-secure firmware images. The framework rejects inconsistent resource use, post-configuration attribution changes, wrong-domain callbacks, and calls to unregistered Secure services. A door-lock case study on an STM32U5 Nucleo board produced images of 232.7 KiB and 228.4 KiB of flash with roughly 220 KiB of SRAM per domain.

Five previously proposed attacks were replicated using only standard world-creation features. The authors conclude that existing platform vetting, runtime protections, and creator policies are insufficient to mitigate malicious world creators.
