Mantax OTAX Android Ransomware Spies on Users, Steals OTPs and Encrypts Files

New Android malware family Mantax OTAX combines ransomware, spyware, and OTP theft via sideloaded APKs, linked to Indonesian threat actors.

Researchers at zLabs and Zimperium analyzed Mantax OTAX, an aggressive Android malware strain distributed as sideloaded APKs through phishing and messaging lures on third-party file-sharing services. The malware requests device-administrator and Accessibility permissions to steal lock-screen PINs, intercept SMS one-time passwords, harvest contacts and history, capture screens via MediaProjection, and silently photograph victims, while encrypting files with AES and writing .enc files on Android 9 and older. Its C2 uses HTTPS at apimantax[.]otax[.]fun with the active domain fetched dynamically from a GitHub repository, and a newer version adds WebSocket communication, app blocking, video overlays, and text-to-speech harassment. A Firebase misconfiguration exposed extortion conversations and victim data, and Android 10+ Scoped Storage limits the encryption reach but not the surveillance capabilities.

American Being Prosecuted for Wiping His Phone Before Handing It Over to Border Officials

A U.S. citizen is being prosecuted for using GrapheneOS's duress passcode to wipe his phone before border officials could search it.

Tunick entered a dedicated wipe passcode in GrapheneOS, a hardened Android alternative running on his Google Pixel, erasing the device's contents when demanded by border officials. His attorneys confirmed the software was in use, and the prosecution is proceeding even though he was not under arrest. The case raises unresolved constitutional questions about what rights apply at the U.S. border, which the government has long treated as outside U.S. soil until entry is authorized. GrapheneOS publicly asserted the feature is legal and that laws weakening its protections would be unconstitutional.

WeChat Zero-Click Worm Took Over Accounts on iPhone and Android via Incoming Calls

Researchers demonstrated a zero-click WeChat worm that hijacked accounts via incoming calls; Tencent blocked the exploit server-side after July disclosure, no real attacks reported.

Once exploited, the attacker gains full control of the WeChat account, including messages, calls, payments, and mini programs, though not the phone itself. Tencent mitigated the flaw server-side, confirmed blocked on 28 August, shipping WeChat 8.0.77 for Android and 8.0.76 for iOS on 21 August. No CVE has been assigned, Tencent published no advisory, and no attacks in the wild have been reported; WeChat/Weixin counts 1.439 billion monthly active users.

Hack One Robot, Reach the Next: Unitree G1 Security Flaws

Researcher chained two Unitree G1 flaws (CVE-2026-76639, CVE-2026-76640) to gain unauthenticated root access, with compromised robots able to infect others via Bluetooth.

Security researcher Olivier Laflamme chained a path-traversal file-write flaw (CVE-2026-76639) in the G1 chatbot service and a Bluetooth server buffer overflow (CVE-2026-76640) to achieve unauthenticated root access remotely. The chain abuses Unitree's cloud API as a decryption oracle for the AES-128 key that unlocks BLE and WebRTC channels, and a compromised robot can propagate the attack to nearby G1 units. Unitree patched the cloud ownership-check flaw, paid a $5,000 bounty, and firmware fixes for BLE pairing and the buffer overflow remain harder to deliver.

Four Nation-State Actors Used the Same Chrome Zero-Day Exploit Kit Within 12 Days

Proofpoint reports four nation-state actors, mostly China-nexus, adopted the BlueMoon Chrome and Windows zero-day exploit kit within 12 days, targeting US organizations.

Proofpoint tracked an exploit kit dubbed BlueMoon that chains CVE-2026-85046, a Chrome V8 type-confusion bug, with an unnamed V8 sandbox escape and CVE-2026-85880, a Windows kernel privilege escalation using ALPC and the Windows Notification Facility. The first observed use was by China-nexus TA412 (APT31, Violet Typhoon, JungleBamboo) on August 28, 2026 against US NGOs, mining companies, and commodity trading firms, followed by UNK_LateNight targeting US aerospace and defense companies on September 2. Both V8 bugs were patch-gap zero-days: the fix was committed to Chromium on August 7 but reached stable Chrome on September 3, enabling rapid weaponization from public patches. TA412's post-exploitation payload, GemStone, is a malicious browser extension posing as an AI-powered Google Gemini companion that captures keystrokes, cookies, screenshots, and browsing history via a Cloudflare Worker C2.

China-Linked Hackers Exploit Chrome and Windows Zero-Days in BlueMoon Attacks

China-linked clusters deploy the BlueMoon kit chaining Chrome V8 CVE-2026-85046 and Windows LPE CVE-2026-85880 in espionage campaigns.

Proofpoint researchers identified BlueMoon, an exploit kit combining a V8 type-confusion RCE (CVE-2026-85046), a V8 sandbox escape, and a Windows kernel privilege-escalation flaw (CVE-2026-85880), first observed August 28, 2026. MantaxOtax Android Malware Combines Ransomware With Spyware

Zimperium analyzed MantaxOtax Android malware combining AES file encryption with extensive spying, linked to Indonesian actors and distributed via sideloading.

Zimperium's zLabs published a technical analysis of MantaxOtax, an Android malware family that combines ransomware-style file encryption with comprehensive spyware, linked to Indonesian threat actors and distributed via sideloaded APKs on a third-party file-sharing service. The malware requests device administrator, SMS, contacts, storage and Accessibility permissions, resolves its C2 domain dynamically from a GitHub repository, and encrypts files with AES using per-device keys derived from the Android ID on Android 9 and earlier. It steals WhatsApp messages, Telegram credentials, OTPs and other data, and uses MediaProjection for screenshots and screen recording staged on Catbox; a second variant adds WebSocket C2 with persistent screen locking and app blocking.
