Chypothermia: Clock Freezing for Static Side-channel Attacks

Chypothermia attack uses cryogenic cooling to disable clock and voltage sensors, evading detection and blocking key zeroization on OpenTitan root of trust.

Chypothermia is a static side-channel attack that exposes chips to cryogenic temperatures, disrupting on-chip mixed-signal components to disable the clock sensor, clock generation circuit, and voltage sensors without electrical tampering. Combined with Chypnosis (IEEE S&P 2026), it halts the clock while evading temperature-based anomaly detection. It was implemented on multiple FPGA/SoC platforms and applied to the OpenTitan root of trust's alert handler, evading detection and preventing key zeroization. The authors also propose an FPGA-compatible self-heating sensor as a countermeasure.

Analog Pin Directionality as an Exfiltration Attack Surface in Mixed-Signal ICs

Researchers demonstrate exfiltration through nominally input-only analog pins in mixed-signal ICs, recovering data at 10 kbps on a 55nm PPG front-end.

The paper identifies a directionality-based attack class in analog/mixed-signal (AMS) ICs where data-dependent circuit-offset modulation converts a nominally input-only pin into an outbound information channel. Three host conditions enable the attack: a closed-loop amplifier, an exposed amplifier input, and sufficiently high impedance at that pin. Silicon validation on a photoplethysmography analog front-end in 55nm CMOS showed exfiltration at up to 10 kbps with error-free PRBS recovery, under 0.001% area overhead, and only 0.03 dB SNR reduction.

A lightweight compression system reduces weight plaintext memory traffic by 10x, while a specialized dataflow maximizes on-chip reuse of intermediate ciphertexts. Experiments show up to 5.7x speedup over the Cheetah baseline on CPUs and 4.2x with an accelerator.

Hardware Fingerprinting FTQC via Quantum Decoder Timing

Quantum decoder timing on IBM Heron processors forms a side channel enabling device fingerprinting with 89% accuracy and workload inference.

The work demonstrates that wall-clock syndrome-decoding times on fault-tolerant quantum computers constitute a novel hardware side channel. Using per-shot decoder timings from three IBM Heron processors collected over 68 days, a passive observer can reconstruct detector-firing distributions, estimate logical error rate, infer code distance, and fingerprint the specific device with up to 89% accuracy versus 33% for random guessing. Noisy simulation based on Google's 105-qubit Willow processor distinguishes nine surface-code patches at 81% accuracy, showing the channel persists across vendors and code families.

OpenSSL’s new alpha build speeds up post-quantum crypto

OpenSSL 4.1.0 alpha1 adds DTLS 1.3 support and speeds up ML-DSA and ML-KEM post-quantum operations across several architectures.

The OpenSSL project released the first alpha of OpenSSL 4.1.0, months before general availability. The build adds DTLS 1.3 (RFC 9147) to secure UDP-based traffic such as VPNs, video calls and IoT, and includes optimized ML-DSA and ML-KEM operations for ppc64le, s390x and x86_64 plus AVX-512 acceleration for SHAKE hashing and AES-CBC decryption. Breaking changes include a new Net::Curl::Easy dependency for tsget, dropped Windows-on-Itanium and Windows CE support, and replacement of the no-ecdsa/no-ecdh Configure options with no-ec. It also adds GREASE support (RFC 8701), a DTLS mode for the SSL listener API, IKEv2 KDF support, and initial Elbrus2000 processor architecture support.

FCC proposes public scorecard to rate telecoms on anti-robocall efforts

The FCC proposed a public scorecard rating telecoms' anti-robocall effectiveness and removed 14 providers from US networks for compliance failures.

The Federal Communications Commission issued a public notice proposing a scorecard that would assess how effectively retail voice providers, including wireless, wireline and VoIP, prevent illegal robocalls, drawing on Robocall Mitigation Database filings, consumer complaint and enforcement data. The agency stressed it is not a rulemaking imposing new requirements, and it is seeking comment on scope, such as whether to focus on larger providers. The same day, the FCC removed 14 providers from the Robocall Mitigation Database for non-compliance, effectively requiring other US providers to block their traffic within two days.

Wyden seeks upgraded NSA security guidance on commercial VPN use

New TCG guidance gives buyers a way to test PQC-ready TPM claims

The guidance lets buyers request vendor evidence that TPMs meet end-to-end post-quantum requirements for identities, attestation, and hardware-anchored trust rather than single-algorithm compliance. TCG also announced plans to extend its certification programs to certify TPMs meeting PTP 1.07, noting that 90% of businesses still lack a formal PQC roadmap.

Eight years later, federal authorities re-up charges against alleged Iranian hackers at Mabna Institute

US prosecutors unsealed a superseding indictment charging 17 Iranians in the Mabna Institute's state-sponsored theft of 31.5 terabytes from universities and companies.

The superseding indictment unsealed in the Southern District of New York charges 17 people affiliated with Tehran's Mabna Institute, adding eight defendants to the 2018 indictment of nine. The institute allegedly compromised over 100,000 professor email accounts worldwide, including 8,000 accounts at 144 US universities, and stole at least 31.5 terabytes of academic journals, dissertations, and e-books. US universities spent approximately $3.4 billion procuring the stolen data, and victims also included at least five federal and state agencies, 42 US companies, and 11 foreign companies including HBO. The State Department's Rewards for Justice program is offering up to $10 million for information on four of the defendants.
