Adversary simulation: what you need to knownew

UK NCSC publishes guidance on adversary simulation, comparing full spectrum and assumed breach approaches across prerequisites, testing, and reporting phases.

NCSC guidance describes two adversary simulation approaches: full spectrum, starting outside the network with an end-to-end attack, and assumed breach, starting from an internal foothold. The preferred methodology spans three phases - prerequisites (scoping, passive reconnaissance, preparation), testing (active reconnaissance, initial access, internal phase, cleanup), and reporting. The document distinguishes adversary simulation from penetration testing and stresses customer-defined objectives and minimal information sharing.

Kaspersky's Securelink analysts, via Securelist, documented NightEagle (APT-Q-95) attacks on Russian companies that begin with VPN logins using stolen valid credentials from Cloudflare WARP and European infrastructure. On Exchange servers the group deployed GhostContainer, a .NET backdoor built from public components including Neo-reGeorg tunneling, CVE-2020-0688 logic, and the GhostWebShell class, controlled through Exchange web headers. The operators exposed RDP through Microsoft Dev Tunnels paired with rdp2tcp, staged tools in GitHub repositories, and exploited BlueKeep (CVE-2019-0708) to create admin accounts before running DCSync against Active Directory.

GhostCode Phishing Kit Bypasses Microsoft 365 MFA to Hijack Accounts in 78 Seconds

eSentire identified GhostCode, a phishing kit abusing Microsoft 365 OAuth device-code sign-in to steal tokens and take over accounts in seconds.

eSentire analysts identified GhostCode in late August, a phishing kit that uses business contact-form messages and an NDA pretext to deliver a password-protected HTML attachment leading victims to a Microsoft device-code sign-in. Victims authenticate on legitimate Microsoft pages, letting the kit obtain a Primary Refresh Token in 32 seconds and register three devices in 78 seconds, with residential proxies matching the victim's location. The kit hides its redirect with encrypted addresses, junk data, and scanner-filtering challenges, and uses GHOSTnet-linked infrastructure during device enrolment. eSentire recommends blocking device-code authentication via Conditional Access, invalidating tokens, and reviewing newly enrolled devices.

Docker Sandboxes Vulnerabilities Let Malicious Guests Escape Workspace and Access Host Files

Docker fixed two symlink-race flaws in Docker Sandboxes, CVE-2026-77179 and CVE-2026-79994, letting malicious guests escape the workspace and read host files; fixed in 0.42.0.

Docker patched CVE-2026-77179 (Critical) and CVE-2026-79994 (High) in Docker Sandboxes 0.42.0, released September 7. Both are time-of-check-to-time-of-use symlink races: CVE-2026-77179 in the macOS virtio-fs host server (versions 0.28.0 to before 0.42.0) can allow a malicious guest to read or modify arbitrary host files and potentially achieve code execution, while CVE-2026-79994 in the guest-to-host Unix socket relay (0.37.0 to before 0.42.0) can redirect host connections to arbitrary AF_UNIX sockets. Docker recommends upgrading and, as interim mitigation, using clone mode and avoiding read-write host mounts.

BlackHatSect0r Hackers Disable AI Safety Controls to Automate Credential Theft and Cyberattacks

French-speaking crew BlackHatSect0r disabled AI agent safety controls to automate scanning, credential harvesting, and vishing, exposing 16,834 stolen credentials.

Socradar researchers analyzed the exposed infrastructure of a French-speaking crew called BlackHatSect0r && DXQRTXX, which ran a Nous Research Hermes agent on a DeepSeek model with safety controls removed via HERMES_DISABLE_SAFETY=1. A custom Go-based C2 platform, DXSCAN, was exposed on port 8080 with over 200 secret-detection patterns, a vault of 16,834 harvested credentials, and scanning activity queuing 2.75 million domains and reaching more than 726,000 hosts. The kit also held a database of roughly 450,000 French telecom subscriber records used to prepare vishing lures impersonating Société Générale, plus JWT-forging tooling for a cryptocurrency exchange. Most confirmed compromises relied on exposed secrets and cloud misconfiguration rather than novel exploits; the one cited vulnerability, CVE-2026-42530, is an NGINX HTTP/3 QPACK use-after-free fixed in version 1.31.2.

When Agents Look Like Beacons: NIDS Evasion by Model Context Protocol Traffic

Research shows Model Context Protocol agent traffic structurally resembles C2 beaconing and evades Suricata signatures and RITA behavioral scoring in testbeds.

An arXiv study demonstrates that Model Context Protocol (MCP) JSON-RPC traffic over Streamable HTTP mimics the polling patterns of C2 frameworks like Cobalt Strike and is not flagged as anomalous by standard enterprise defenses. In a Docker testbed with eleven traffic profiles across three TLS conditions, Suricata with the Emerging Threats Open ruleset produced near-zero alerts and RITA assigned a consistent 0.0 beacon score, regardless of jitter or TLS inspection. The authors propose an agent-native network indication standard using Agent-Native ALPN and out-of-band headers.

GhostCode Abuses Microsoft Entra Device Enrollment to Maintain Access After Token Revocation

eSentire exposes GhostCode, a device-code phishing kit that abuses Microsoft Entra device enrollment to persist even after stolen tokens are revoked.

eSentire's Threat Response Unit observed GhostCode campaigns in late August 2026, using BEC-style social engineering that impersonated procurement staff, including BJ's Wholesale Club, via Salesforce contact forms. Victims received password-protected HTML lures disguised as a FlipBook document portal, with junk-data padding, HTML comment injection, and AES-256-GCM encrypted redirects gated by anti-bot checks. The kit exploits the OAuth 2.0 device authorization grant, prompting victims to approve real Microsoft device-code sign-ins with MFA. Within 78 seconds of approval, attackers registered three Entra devices and obtained a Primary Refresh Token, so rogue device registrations persist even after session token revocation.

Google’s New Search Redirects Make It Harder to Check Where Links Lead Before Clicking

Malwarebytes reports Google's new encoded google.com/goto?url= redirects break hover-preview link checking, weakening a common phishing defense.

Google now routes some search results through opaque google.com/goto?url= redirects using custom encoding, so browser link previews no longer reveal the true destination, only the claimed label above the result. Malwarebytes found the final destination is visible only in the redirect response's Location header, complicating hover-based safety checks as well as scraping, archiving, and audit tools. The change arrives amid malvertising, search-result poisoning, and fake installer campaigns like the recent Node.js infostealer lure. Google says it deploys measures against evolving abuse but did not explain the change.

6 Months on Alert: Get H1 2026 Cyber Risk Report for SOCs and MSSPs

ANY.RUN's H1 2026 report details 15 threat trends including 437% growth in fake CAPTCHA phishing and 90.7% rise in Adobe infrastructure abuse.

The report draws on interactive sandbox submissions from over 700,000 analysts and 16,000 SOC teams between January and June 2026. Attacks abusing Adobe infrastructure grew 90.7% versus H2 2025 while RMM-related attacks rose 26.5%, and custom fake CAPTCHA phishing grew 437% from Q1 to Q2 2026. ANY.RUN argues static IOCs are losing effectiveness as dead drop resolvers hide the final C2 until execution.

Search results are sending people to fake Bitrefill checkouts

Scam sites impersonating Bitrefill's crypto checkout appear in search results, tricking victims into sending up to $1,990 in crypto directly to scammers.

Malwarebytes documents a cluster of lookalike domains copying Bitrefill's gift card checkout, surfaced via search engine results rather than email. Victims choose an amount up to $1,990 and pay in Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC, USDT, Solana, or Litecoin to scammer-controlled addresses, with no recourse since crypto payments are irreversible. Domains use typosquatting and Punycode/IDN homoglyph tricks, and the fake sites run commercial analytics software to measure and optimize victim conversion. Bitrefill's security team is working with takedown specialists to remove the sites.

Hackers Abuse VSSAdmin to Extract NTDS.dit and Delete Windows Recovery Copies

Huntress details intruders using PsExec and VSSAdmin on domain controllers to steal NTDS.dit credentials and delete shadow copies before ransomware.

Huntress analysts identified attackers launching SYSTEM-level command shells via PsExec on a domain controller, then running 'vssadmin create shadow' to snapshot and copy the NTDS.dit Active Directory database. Shadow copies were later deleted to destroy local recovery options ahead of a likely ransomware stage. Huntress recommends correlating VSS creation/deletion events with remote execution, DNS enumeration, and lateral movement rather than alerting on any single VSS event.

Hackers Hijack HBO Max Reddit Account to Push 108 ClickFix Malware Ads

Hijacked verified HBO Max Reddit account ran 108 ClickFix malvertising ads delivering AMOS infostealers, Windows loaders, and crypto clipboard hijackers.

HudsonRock and ADAMnetworks identified a cross-platform ClickFix operation dubbed PasteSwitch that abused the compromised verified Reddit account u/hbomax to publish 108 malicious ads over 48 hours, using domains like hbomaxx[.]us and codex-craft[.]com. macOS victims run curl/zsh commands delivering AMOS-related stealers and fake wallets, while Windows users get an InstallFix route using mshta and PowerShell that loads Amatera in memory and disables AMSI. The operation's AnimateClipper and ZigClipper families hijack clipboards to swap cryptocurrency addresses, with C2 domains rotated via Binance Smart Chain contracts. Reddit paused the ads and is investigating.
