Acronis cPanel Backup Plugin Vulnerability Exploited in Targeted Attacks

Acronis warns CVE-2026-87886, a local privilege escalation flaw in its cPanel/WHM and Plesk backup plugins, is exploited in targeted attacks.

Acronis disclosed CVE-2026-87886 (CVSS 7.8), a high-severity local privilege escalation caused by insecure file permissions in its Backup plugin for cPanel & WHM and Backup extension for Plesk on Linux. Affected versions include cPanel & WHM plugin builds before 1.9.3.1021 (fixed in 1.9.3 HF3) and Plesk extension builds before 1.8.11.638. A low-privileged attacker could escalate permissions and potentially run arbitrary code, impacting confidentiality and integrity of the application. Acronis says exploitation has been detected in the wild in limited, targeted attacks, but has not identified the attackers, timing, or objectives.

CISA Adds Two Known Exploited Vulnerabilities to Catalog

CISA added actively exploited CVE-2026-76460 (Cisco Identity Services Engine) and CVE-2026-87886 (Acronis Backup) to its KEV catalog.

CISA added two vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog based on evidence of active exploitation: CVE-2026-76460, an incorrect use of privileged APIs flaw in Cisco Identity Services Engine, and CVE-2026-87886, an incorrect default permissions flaw in Acronis Backup. Under Binding Operational Directive 26-04, Federal Civilian Executive Branch agencies must prioritize rapid remediation of KEV vulnerabilities on publicly exposed assets that grant total control post-exploitation, and check whether systems were compromised before patching.

BlackHatSect0r Uses DeepSeek-Powered AI Agent to Automate Attacks and Harvest 16,834 Credentialsnew

SOCRadar linked the BlackHatSect0r crew to a DeepSeek-powered AI agent that automated scanning and harvested 16,834 credentials from exposed systems.

SOCRadar researchers found an exposed operation server with 4.9 GB across 9,299 files, including the DXSCAN scanning platform, phishing tools, extortion material and a vault holding 16,834 credentials such as AWS keys, GitHub tokens and Stripe keys. The French-speaking crew ran a Nous Research Hermes agent against a DeepSeek model with safety features removed, queuing 2,759,860 domains and reaching 726,989 hosts. Access came from misconfigurations like public cloud buckets and exposed .env files, not new vulnerabilities.

Active Exploitation Triggers Emergency Patch for Cisco ISE Zero-Day

Cisco urgently patched actively exploited zero-day CVE-2026-76460 (CVSS 10.0), an ISE authentication bypass enabling root command execution; CISA added it to KEV.

Cisco released emergency patches for CVE-2026-76460 (CVSS 10.0), a zero-day authentication bypass in an API endpoint of Identity Services Engine (ISE) and ISE Passive Identity Connector (ISE-PIC), and confirmed active exploitation in the wild. Successful exploitation lets attackers bypass the web-based management interface and execute commands with root privileges, allowing them to hide or delete indicators of compromise. Fixed releases are ISE/ISE-PIC 3.5 Patch 4, 3.4 Patch 7, 3.3 Patch 12, 3.2 Patch 11, and 3.1 Patch 12; no workarounds exist beyond restricting traffic with infrastructure ACLs. CISA added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, giving US federal agencies three days to patch under BOD 26-04.

Three Threat Groups Target Russian Enterprises With Backdoors, Ransomware, and Wipers

Kaspersky details NightEagle, Hacking Cat, and Toy Ghouls targeting Russian enterprises with Exchange backdoors, Gorilla RAT, and destructive Monkey ransomware.

Kaspersky reports three threat clusters targeting Russian enterprises: NightEagle (APT-Q-95), the pro-Ukrainian hacktivist group Hacking Cat, and Toy Ghouls. NightEagle uses compromised VPN credentials and the GhostContainer modular backdoor to fully compromise Microsoft Exchange servers, chaining CVE-2020-0688 exploitation, BlueKeep (CVE-2019-0708), Active Directory vulnerabilities, and DCSync to seize domain controllers. Hacking Cat exploits Exchange flaws including CVE-2021-26855 and CVE-2026-42897 to deliver the Gorilla RAT and multiple Monkey ransomware variants written in Rust, .NET, C++, and Golang targeting Windows, Linux, and VMware ESXi, with some variants acting as wipers that never store the encryption key.

Chosen Brick, Iran’s Surveillance Malware

UK, US, and Dutch agencies warn Iranian CHOSEN BRICK malware targets dissidents and journalists via Telegram, harvesting contacts, emails, and messages since 2025.

The UK NCSC, FBI, and Dutch AIVD jointly attributed the CHOSEN BRICK Windows malware family to Iranian intelligence services, used since at least 2025 against dissidents, journalists, and activists worldwide, including in the UK, US, and Netherlands. Operators build rapport over WhatsApp or Telegram, impersonating known contacts or platform support, then deliver lures disguised as installers for Pictory, RunwayML, Norton Antivirus, Telegram, Adobe Flash Player, or KeePass, or fake MRI results. The malware persists via registry Run keys, adds Microsoft Defender exclusions, and uses per-victim Telegram bot IDs for C2, with newer versions adding HTTPS or SOCKS5 proxies. Some victims' data appeared on pro-Iranian leak sites, raising harassment and physical-safety risks.

Cisco warns of max severity ISE zero-day exploited in attacks

Cisco patched CVE-2026-76460, a maximum-severity authentication bypass in Identity Services Engine actively exploited in attacks; CISA added it to KEV with a three-day federal deadline.

CVE-2026-76460 is a maximum-severity authentication bypass in an API endpoint of Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) and ISE-PIC, exploitable regardless of configuration, allowing attackers to access the web-based management interface. Cisco PSIRT confirmed active exploitation; no workarounds exist, and fixed releases are available for ISE 3.1 through 3.5, with re-imaging of suspect nodes recommended. CISA added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog and ordered federal agencies to patch within three days. Cisco also patched CVE-2026-76423 and five other critical ISE flaws (CVE-2026-20176, CVE-2026-20211, CVE-2026-20307, CVE-2026-20284) that are not yet flagged as exploited.

Unauthenticated RCE Flaws Could Expose 200,000+ WordPress Sites to Takeover

Two unauthenticated CVSS 9.8 code-injection and PHP object injection flaws in The Events Calendar plugin expose 200,000+ WordPress sites to RCE and takeover.

Defiant identified two critical vulnerabilities in The Events Calendar WordPress plugin, which has over 600,000 active installations. CVE-2026-78159, unauthenticated code injection during single-event HTML processing, was patched in version 6.17.3.1 on August 25; CVE-2026-78006, unauthenticated PHP object injection via event comments, was patched in 6.17.4.1 on September 10. Both independent chains lead to remote code execution and full site compromise. Roughly 240,000 sites run versions vulnerable to both flaws, and about 300,000 downloads between September 10 and 14 suggest half of installations may still lack the second fix.
