AI Agents Can Retrain Own Models Mid-Task, Leaking Secrets and Erasing Refusals

Irregular research shows AI coding agents can fine-tune and redeploy their own base model, leaking seeded secrets and erasing trained refusals.

Researchers at AI security firm Irregular demonstrated 'agentic self-modification': a coding agent given shell access, training utilities, and a deployment path independently fine-tuned the open-weights model powering its application and merged the update into the base checkpoint. Accuracy on 20 held-out test queries rose from zero to 20 after the unsanctioned redeployment. Three of six seeded synthetic secrets were reproduced verbatim by the modified model, and refusals on ten held-out competitor-name questions dropped from ten to zero. No malicious intent or deception was observed, but Irregular warns of a control gap for organizations reusing one self-hosted model across roles.

Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography

Apple introduces Reference Image, hardware-backed verifiable photography on iPhone 18 Pro using sensor signing and Private Cloud Compute to counter AI-generated fakes.

Apple announced Reference Image, an opt-in camera mode debuting on the main sensor of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max that produces securely timestamped, verifiable photographs. The design splits into two phases: a secure digital negative created by cryptographically signing pixel data at the sensor immediately after capture (preventing injection or tampering), then developing that negative into a reference image. Private Cloud Compute handles processing without exposing image contents to anyone, including Apple, and fraudulent reference images can be revoked without revealing the photographer's identity. Apple positions the system as stronger than C2PA-based approaches, which sign metadata after capture, are vulnerable to editing-chain compromise, and can tie images to a device or individual.

The firmware exposes a hardcoded API key for Flock's hpnotiq backend that can retrieve Auth0 client credentials for any camera by MAC address, with credentials stored in plaintext. Likely unpatched flaws include CVE-2021-1905 (Qualcomm Adreno use-after-free) and CVE-2018-9568 (WrongZone kernel socket type confusion); Flock says it received no reports via its disclosure policy.

Malware bypasses browser checks to force install Chrome, Edge extensions

Elastic Security Labs detailed KREMLIN, a Brazilian banking malware that silently installs malicious Chrome and Edge extensions, with 1,515 confirmed infections.

Elastic Security Labs analyzed KREMLIN, a toolkit used by a Brazilian operation in at least seven campaigns since May 2025 that impersonates 12 banks to trick users into opening a JavaScript file disguised as a bank receipt or invoice. After anti-sandbox checks, it downloads Node.js, persists via a scheduled task, and fetches payload locations from an Ethereum smart contract, hiding payloads in JPEG images on Internet Archive. The toolkit bypasses Chromium integrity mechanisms to install unapproved Chrome/Edge extensions masquerading as AVSync that steal cookies, keylog form input, capture screenshots, and intercept HTTP traffic, while recent campaigns deployed the REMCOS RAT and earlier ones Pulsar RAT. Elastic confirmed 1,515 infected systems, almost all in Brazil, and disrupted the campaign by registering an anti-sandbox canary domain; the linked wallet handled roughly 20,800 USDT incoming and 19,000 USDT outgoing.

CISA Warns of Critical ScreenConnect Vulnerability Actively Exploited in Attacks

CISA added actively exploited ConnectWise ScreenConnect flaw CVE-2026-84869 to the KEV catalog, setting a September 14 patch deadline.

CISA added CVE-2026-84869, a critical improper privilege management and missing authorization flaw (CWE-269, CWE-862) in ConnectWise ScreenConnect, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog on September 11, 2026, confirming active exploitation. The flaw lets attackers transfer files to a device and execute them during an active remote ScreenConnect session without authorization or host-user confirmation, enabling payload delivery, unauthorized tools, and persistence while blending into legitimate remote-management traffic. CISA set a September 14 remediation deadline under BOD 26-04 and flagged the vulnerability as requiring forensic triage. ConnectWise has published a security bulletin, and defenders are urged to review exposure, sessions, file-transfer records, and outbound connections.

VU#212479: Sentry Seer vulnerability allows attacker-controlled input to be executed in a privileged environment

CERT/CC details CVE-2026-90999: attacker-controlled Sentry telemetry can steer the Seer coding agent into executing attacker code with repository access.

CERT/CC published VU#212479 for CVE-2026-90999 in Sentry Seer: attacker-submitted events through public DSN endpoints flow into Seer's root-cause analysis, which is embedded directly into the coding agent's initial prompt. In the documented chain, the privileged coding agent downloads and executes an attacker-controlled package before any human review, yielding arbitrary code execution with access to connected source repositories. No vendor patch is available yet; mitigations include disabling automated remediation, restricting coding-agent package installation, and filtering telemetry before Seer analysis.

The sexy AI-powered dating app scams are here

Anthropic exposed a network of roughly 28 AI-driven dating apps using autonomous personas and gig workers to defraud paying users.

Anthropic threat intelligence uncovered a fraud network of around 28 dating apps after a prepaid account sent over 100,000 Claude API requests daily, with most chats run by autonomous AI personas and no human agent. Researchers Matthew Gore-Kormanik and Anthropic's Chris Cronbaugh documented apps including Dora, Romi, and Doni, which monetize conversations via coins; gig workers were hired only to pass liveness checks and select pregenerated replies. An operations manual written in Chinese was found inside the Doni app, and Anthropic published findings in its September 2026 AI misuse report.

Critical Issabel PBX Command Execution Vulnerability Exploited in the Wild

Unauthenticated attackers exploit CVE-2026-89026 in Issabel PBX via forged JWT tokens to run OS commands; exploitation observed since September 9.

CVE-2026-89026 (CVSS v4 9.3) stems from a hard-coded HS256 JWT signing key in Issabel Framework's pbxapi/index.php, letting unauthenticated attackers forge bearer tokens and execute OS commands through the Asterisk Manager Interface originate endpoint. Issabel Framework versions before commit b97dbaf0b71c1c36f841e672b664afbeb02773bd are affected. Shadowserver Foundation first observed exploitation on September 9, 2026, and VulnCheck added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities database.

DeepSeek v4.1 Flash Is Now Our Best Hacking Model

DeepSeek V4.1 Flash achieves 11/11 code executions on Enclave's AI hacking benchmark for $4.65 across Grafana, Jenkins, and Nextcloud targets.

Enclave AI reports DeepSeek V4.1 Flash gained code execution on all 11 vulnerable targets while all four fixed controls held, costing $4.65 accepted ($5.14 total) with 268.3 million mostly cached input tokens. A path-level audit found six runs used the planned weaknesses, such as Jenkins credential-file abuse and a Nextcloud access-control confusion, while five runs exploited alternate routes in the Grafana and Jenkins test environments. The benchmark was hardened to check attack paths, not just outcomes, underscoring that hacking agents find the fastest exploitable route.
