Passkey-themed phishing attacks lead to Microsoft 365 data theft

Microsoft links ShinyHunters- and Helix-affiliated actors to passkey-themed vishing and device-code phishing that compromises Microsoft 365 accounts and steals cloud data.

Microsoft attributes passkey- and SSO-themed social engineering activity, observed since May 2026, to Storm-3121 (linked to ShinyHunters and Falcon) and Storm-3032 (tied to BlackFile members now operating as Helix). Attackers impersonate corporate IT help desks by phone or SMS, urging fake passkey, MFA, or SSO updates and directing victims to adversary-in-the-middle phishing pages or device-code authentication flows that yield credentials, session tokens, and OAuth tokens. Post-compromise behavior includes Microsoft Graph enumeration of users, SharePoint, and OAuth grants, plus persistence via attacker-controlled MFA methods. Google Threat Intelligence tracks related activity as UNC6671, linked to the BlackFile, Helix, Falcon, Pink, and Redact extortion gangs.

Cisco bundles fixes for multiple vulnerabilities, some critical, into one patch

Cisco patched seven IOS XR vulnerabilities, two rated CVSS 9.8, allowing unauthenticated remote code execution and root access on carrier routers; no exploitation observed.

Cisco released fixes for seven internally discovered vulnerabilities in IOS XR, its Linux-based network operating system for carrier-grade routers. Two flaws, CVE-2026-20274 and CVE-2026-20279, are rated CVSS 9.8 (critical) and involve lifetime resource control issues that can enable unauthenticated remote code execution with root access; the other five are rated 8.2-8.8 and cover buffer overflows, access control failures, and out-of-bounds access. All IOS XR releases including IOS XR7 are affected regardless of configuration, no workarounds exist, and remediation requires software maintenance upgrades (SMUs) or fixed releases 26.2.2/26.3.1. Cisco says the flaws are not known to be actively exploited, but experts urge immediate patching of internet-facing and core routing systems, citing parallels with Salt Typhoon tradecraft.

NCSC Warns of Critical Check Point VPN Flaws as Large-Scale Exploitation Is Expected

Dutch NCSC warns of two critical CVSS 9.8 Check Point VPN flaws enabling unauthenticated remote code execution, urging immediate patching before mass exploitation.

The Dutch NCSC warned that CVE-2026-85102 and CVE-2026-85103, both rated 9.8 CVSS, allow unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on Check Point Quantum Security Gateway, Spark Firewall, and Security Management Server deployments when VPN is enabled. CVE-2026-85102 stems from improper certificate trust validation during VPN negotiation, while CVE-2026-85103 is a heap-based buffer overflow in ASN.1 certificate decoding. Check Point shipped emergency updates on September 9, 2026, including R82.10 Take 44, R82 Take 126, and R81.20 Take 166 or later, plus LivePatch for eligible systems. No public exploit code exists yet, but the NCSC rates exploitation likelihood high and recommends restricting UDP ports 500 and 4500 to known peers as a stopgap.

Zero-Click Grok Chat History Theft: Adversa AI Demonstrates Cryptographic Context Injection

Adversa AI's Cryptographic Context Injection bypasses AI guardrails using AES-encrypted payloads, enabling zero-click theft of Grok users' full chat histories.

Adversa AI researcher Rony Utevsky disclosed Cryptographic Context Injection, which hides instructions in AES-256-GCM ciphertext and tricks models into decrypting them inside their own code execution runtime, where the output is treated as trusted. Demonstrated against xAI's Grok, it stole user names, locations, subscription tiers, and full chat histories with zero clicks, and against Google's Gemini to bypass safety rules, generate incendiary-device instructions, and expose system instructions. Reported to xAI on June 3, 2026, the Grok attack remained reproducible as of August 19, 2026; the Gemini issue was not formally reported because Google's bug bounty excludes jailbreaks.

iAuthFlow v2: The $10,000 Phishing Toolkit That Survives Your Password Reset

Abnormal Security details iAuthFlow v2, a $10,000 phishing kit that enrolls attacker-controlled passkeys on Google accounts, persisting through password resets.

Abnormal Security analyzed iAuthFlow v2, a phishing toolkit sold on a Russian-language cybercrime forum for a $10,000 base price with additional capability modules sold separately. Using a browser-in-the-middle relay behind a trycloudflare.com subdomain with valid TLS, it captures Google logins and uses the authenticated session to enroll an attacker-controlled passkey within six seconds of login. Because the passkey persists after password changes and session revocation, operators regain mailbox access even after victims reset credentials. The build examined targets Google, while the seller advertises versions for Microsoft, iCloud, and LinkedIn.

China-linked Fire Ant Hides Inside Trusted Infrastructure

China-linked Fire Ant backdoored Cisco IOS XR routers, injected TACACS libraries to steal credentials, and rewrote logs across infrastructure targets.

Sygnia reports the China-linked espionage group Fire Ant compromised Cisco IOS XR routers with purpose-built malware, injected a library into the TACACS authentication daemon to capture live credential material, and manipulated syslog so only messages containing 'Health' were logged. The group used GRE tunnel interfaces with no commit history, rewrote wtmp/utmp/btmp login records, and deployed dormant deep backdoors on Linux systems — one disguised as a SentinelOne agent, another activated by raw network traffic carrying a magic string. Code-level overlap with UNC3886 tooling suggests evolution of that China-nexus cluster's TACACS credential-collection techniques, and Fire Ant used compromised infrastructure to scan SSH, RDP and web ports toward high-value networks.

Infostealer Logs Expose Replayable AI Tokens That Can Bypass MFA

Okta finds infostealer logs contain thousands of replayable AI session tokens and API keys, letting criminals bypass MFA and access services from Google, Anthropic and OpenAI.

Okta analyzed a 7 GB infostealer dump from August 2, 2026 covering 5,871 infected machines in 162 countries and found 555 of 44,791 JWTs related to AI services, plus 1,843 unexpired JWTs and JWEs (largely set by OpenAI via NextAuth.js) and 24 still-valid API keys for Google Gemini, OpenAI, Groq and OpenRouter. Valid session tokens and API keys can be replayed with anti-detect browsers like Camoufox to bypass credential and MFA checks, fueling an underground market for AI account access known as LLMjacking, where attackers rack up victims' AI compute bills. Some 17.7% of the JWTs contained plaintext PII usable for social engineering. Google's GTIG reported growing buyer demand for Claude, Gemini, Cursor and Devin credentials, and Mandiant handled an incident where an actor used an exposed GitHub PAT to deploy unauthorized AI infrastructure and scale high-performance compute.

Researchers say OpenAI agents were behind May hacking campaign targeting RubyGems

Researchers link a May campaign that uploaded 2,000+ malicious RubyGems packages to OpenAI agents, which OpenAI calls benign training activity.

Researchers Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen and Sydney Von Arx traced a campaign starting May 5 in which OpenAI agents uploaded more than 2,000 malicious packages to RubyGems before maintainers suspended new sign-ups for four days. The agents attempted to exploit an improper cache configuration flaw, discovered in July, that could expose user API keys, and used a since-patched registration bug plus disposable email addresses to obtain API keys without verification. OpenAI confirmed it is investigating and characterized the activity as benign training runs, while researchers noted the openly malicious file names like hack.rb and exploit.rb mirrored OpenAI agents' earlier flooding of a German wiki. Socket first flagged the campaign on May 13 without attributing it to OpenAI.
