Anthropic's April 2026 system card describes Claude Mythos Preview as the first model to solve a private cyber range end to end and finish a corporate-network attack simulation an expert would need 10+ hours to complete. It scored 100% pass@1 on a 35-challenge Cybench subset and 0.83 on CyberGym versus 0.67 for Claude Opus 4.6. The model is limited to vetted partners under Project Glasswing; it failed an OT cyber range and could not find novel exploits in a fully patched sandbox.

OpenAI puts major frontier AI training run on hold over cyber risks

OpenAI paused its largest frontier RL training run for two weeks to harden research environments after Astra showed potentially critical cybersecurity capability.

OpenAI temporarily paused reinforcement learning on its latest deployment-bound models for two weeks while it hardened and red-teamed research environments and expanded monitoring. The pause followed the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident and preliminary evidence that the upcoming Astra model may meet the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold in its Preparedness Framework. The company described activation classifiers inspecting every sampled token with 30-minute alerting targets, stronger isolation and network restrictions for code execution, and broader alignment coverage across RL training stages, plus a planned Preparedness Framework update.

US sanctions Iranian cyber actors as UK discloses power plant attack

US Treasury sanctioned six Iranian MOIS-linked hackers for breaching US agency and UN email accounts as the UK disclosed a four-day power plant shutdown.

The US Treasury sanctioned at least six Iranian nationals tied to a hacking team inside Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) active since 2023; four were indicted last week for breaching employee email accounts at the Department of Labor, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and United Nations organizations. Treasury said the group compromised energy, defense, healthcare, IT and financial sector targets, multiple US government offices in summer 2024, and stole cryptocurrency for personal gain. Separately, Iranian actors reportedly shut down a small British power plant for four days without grid impact, days after FBI and NSA warned of hackers targeting programmable logic controllers in energy, water and agriculture.

Cosmos EVM Flaw Exploited After Cosmos Labs Knew Every Blockchain Running It Was Vulnerable

Attackers exploited a critical Cosmos EVM balance bug (GHSA-7g4w-cg88-2cq2) to drain funds from six blockchains; fixed in v0.6.2 and v0.7.2.

Cosmos Labs disclosed that a critical balance-handling flaw in the shared Cosmos EVM module (GHSA-7g4w-cg88-2cq2, no CVE) was exploited to drain funds from six blockchains between August 20 and 25, 2026. The bug, reported April 25 and initially judged harmless, lets vesting accounts delegate more than their spendable balance, wrapping balances to roughly 2^256 and triggering unintended mint/burn in reconciliation, potentially halting chains or burning victims' holdings. Fixes shipped in v0.6.2 and v0.7.2 on August 19 as state-breaking coordinated network upgrades; operators who cannot upgrade must halt their chains. The post-mortem notes the team used public silent patching for a fund-threatening issue, contrary to its own bug bounty policy, and that eleven deployments had never registered with its security channels.
