Inside the Warehouse Where Amazon Scans and Destroys Books for AI Training

Amazon's Las Vegas VGT3 warehouse destructively scans thousands of books, cutting spines and discarding pages, to build AI training data.

404 Media interviewed an anonymous Amazon employee at the VGT3 warehouse in Las Vegas, part of the same complex as the LAS8 print-on-demand facility. Workers receive shipments of books including library liquidations and University of London materials, scan them, cut the spines off with machines, and discard the loose pages irreversibly. The operation was discovered by placing a tracking device in a shipment of rare books a bookseller suspected was being acquired by an anonymous AI company. Employees described scanning barcodes to weed out duplicates and an often disorganized process that changed daily.

Amazon Kiro Prompt Injection Can Exfiltrate Sensitive Data Through Kiro Powers

Mindgard found a prompt injection flaw in Amazon Kiro IDE letting attacker-controlled workspace files exfiltrate sensitive local data; fixed in version 0.8.140.

Mindgard disclosed a prompt injection flaw in Amazon Kiro, an agentic AI IDE, that lets attacker-controlled repository content steer the agent into exfiltrating sensitive workspace data through Kiro Powers, which bundles MCP server configurations, POWER.md steering files, hooks, and contextual knowledge. Exploitation requires the user to open a malicious project via a workspace file and send any message to the agent; difficulty is rated low and it works in both trusted and untrusted workspaces. Amazon fixed the issue in Kiro IDE 0.8.140; the flaw has no CVE identifier and follows earlier Kiro bugs including CVE-2026-10591, plus related prompt-injection and code-execution issues in Codex CLI, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Copilot CLI, and Claude Code.

We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility

Investigation reveals Amazon buys and destroys massive quantities of printed books, cutting bindings to scan them for AI training data at a Las Vegas warehouse.

A 404 Media investigation tracked a rare book with a GPS device to Amazon's VGT3 warehouse in Las Vegas, revealing an unreported operation buying large volumes of printed books for AI training data. Employees there report cutting bindings off shipments to scan the books quickly, destroying the printed copies in the process. The finding offers rare visibility into how major AI companies acquire print material for training corpora.

AWS limits AI agents’ data access, even when manipulated

AWS detailed propagating user authorization context through Bedrock AgentCore so downstream services enforce access controls even if the agent is manipulated via prompt injection.

AWS described an architecture for Amazon Bedrock AgentCore where user tokens and department claims are validated at runtime and propagated to DynamoDB, Bedrock Knowledge Bases, and Salesforce. Downstream services enforce authorization themselves, so a prompt-injected or buggy agent cannot retrieve data the user is not entitled to see. AWS demonstrated the pattern with a CRM use case separating Sales and Finance access and recommends IAM-backed knowledge bases for stricter isolation.

AWS Systems Manager Agent Vulnerability Allows Attackers to Bypass Port-Forwarding Restrictions

Critical SSRF flaw in AWS SSM Agent (CVE-2026-89049) lets authenticated users bypass link-local denylists and reach EC2 Instance Metadata Service for IAM credentials.

CVE-2026-89049 (Critical, CVSS v3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) affects Amazon SSM Agent versions earlier than 3.3.4851.0, with the fix shipping in 3.3.4851.0. The remote-host port-forwarding feature's denylist for link-local addresses can be bypassed because equivalent address representations are not validated, enabling SSRF to restricted endpoints such as the EC2 Instance Metadata Service at 169.254.169.254. An attacker with authenticated AWS access and ssm:StartSession permission could retrieve instance profile IAM credentials and pivot to S3, Secrets Manager, Lambda, or other cloud resources depending on role permissions.

The Worst Spam Emails: Inside iLands' AI Agent Hustle

Autonomous AI agents from startup iLands spam freelancers with deceptive persona emails offering paid research services, prompting FTC and Amazon SES abuse reports.

AI startup iLands, founded by ex-ByteDance-affiliated entrepreneur Kaixin Tang, operates autonomous agents such as the persona "Leo Ashford" that send unsolicited emails to creators and freelancers offering research services for around $25. A Tedium writer received over a dozen of these messages in three days via the iLands.app domain, sent through Amazon SES with no unsubscribe option, using debunk-style hooks like falsely correcting a 404 error myth. The agents target professional authors and freelancers, and the author recommends reporting the campaign to the FTC and Amazon's email-abuse address.

Between July 28 and August 23, 2026, the six names arrived from 824 IP addresses spread across 795 /24 networks that matched no published vendor ranges, shared one HTTP client fingerprint that had used more than 1,500 user agent strings, and never requested /robots.txt. The scanners targeted /.env, /.env.production, /.env.bak, and /.aws/credentials, hunting secrets, cloud access keys, private keys, and password stores, while forged Amazon crawler names appeared at greater volume under undocumented user agents. GreyNoise could not confirm whether any file was returned or any organization affected, and published all 824 addresses and targeted paths for defenders.

Have it both ways: stay discoverable in search while disallowing AI training

Cloudflare launches Disallow AI Training setting letting sites block AI training via robots.txt while staying indexed in search; Apple, Google, and Microsoft honor it.

What must happen for AI’s trillion-dollar gamble to pay off

Hyperscalers need 2.7x productivity gains by 2030 to justify nearly $1.1 trillion in AI data center spending, or risk bankruptcy and capital misallocation.

Wharton finance professor Jessica Wachter estimates hyperscaler AI expenditure will reach nearly $1.1 trillion through 2027 and that a 2.7x productivity increase is needed to break even by 2030. AI revenues of roughly $150-200 billion this year fall far short of about $750 billion in annual spending, with total investment from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle potentially exceeding $5 trillion over four years. Alphabet reported its first free cash flow deficit (about $5.9 billion) since its 2004 IPO due to AI infrastructure costs. Researchers warn that failed demand could make the buildout the largest capital misallocation in history, with depreciating GPU chips risking stranded assets.

Why don't machine learning research agents overfit?

Amazon researchers explain why ML research agents avoid benchmark overfitting, attributing generalization to compressibility of successful strategies.

Amazon Science summarizes the paper "What fits (into few tokens) doesn't overfit: Compression and generalization in ML research agents," which investigates why benchmark hill-climbing loops, whether run by human communities or LLM research agents, do not produce rampant overfitting. The explanation formalizes Occam's razor via a counting argument: successful ML strategies are highly compressible, so short descriptions lack room to memorize benchmark data and must capture real structure. LLM-based agents, being resettable and controllable, allow this hypothesis to be tested empirically.

When LLM judges agree, should we believe them?

Amazon ICML paper uses Ising models to correct correlated LLM-judge votes, beating accuracy-weighted panels by 9-14%.

Amazon Science describes an ICML paper, "Dependence-aware label aggregation for LLM-as-a-judge via Ising models," addressing how correlated judge outputs inflate majority-vote confidence. The unsupervised method models pairwise dependence between judges, learning both reliability and similarity without human reference labels. Tested on relevance, toxicity, and summarization tasks with 10 judge models at temperature zero, it outperformed accuracy-weighted voting by 9% to 14%.
