Beware the SparroWock: The backdoor that bites, the commands that catch

ESET attributes a new modular C++ backdoor, SparroWocky, to China-aligned group FamousSparrow, deployed against government entities across Latin America since August 2025.

ESET Research reports that the China-aligned espionage group FamousSparrow, active since at least 2019, has replaced its SparrowDoor implant with a new custom backdoor dubbed SparroWocky since August 2025. The modular C++ backdoor manipulates low-level memory structures, patches code at runtime to evade detection, and can load and execute Beacon Object Files. Since mid-2025, roughly 90% of the group's targets have been in Latin America, including governmental organizations in Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. ESET links the regional pivot to China's response to renewed US interest in the region, citing Panama's dispute over canal-area ports as a likely intelligence objective.

Mantax OTAX Android Ransomware Spies on Users, Steals OTPs and Encrypts Files

New Android malware family Mantax OTAX combines ransomware, spyware, and OTP theft via sideloaded APKs, linked to Indonesian threat actors.

Researchers at zLabs and Zimperium analyzed Mantax OTAX, an aggressive Android malware strain distributed as sideloaded APKs through phishing and messaging lures on third-party file-sharing services. The malware requests device-administrator and Accessibility permissions to steal lock-screen PINs, intercept SMS one-time passwords, harvest contacts and history, capture screens via MediaProjection, and silently photograph victims, while encrypting files with AES and writing .enc files on Android 9 and older. Its C2 uses HTTPS at apimantax[.]otax[.]fun with the active domain fetched dynamically from a GitHub repository, and a newer version adds WebSocket communication, app blocking, video overlays, and text-to-speech harassment. A Firebase misconfiguration exposed extortion conversations and victim data, and Android 10+ Scoped Storage limits the encryption reach but not the surveillance capabilities.

New Android malware encrypts files, steals data, and harasses victims

Trojanized npm dependencies (colorized_terminal, pretty-log) bundled in coding-challenge archives launch the Node.js implants across Windows, Linux and macOS. NodeRabbit uses AES-256-GCM-encrypted C2 via Azure, and its third variant persists through a fake GitHub Copilot Helper VS Code extension plus Git post-merge/post-checkout hooks. PollCat is an obfuscated JavaScript RAT that registers with C2 before OTP authentication and inventories tools from 24 security vendors.

ShinyHunters claims it breached Florida DMV's DAVID database, stole 200,000+ driver records including SSNs, and set a September 11 extortion deadline.

The ShinyHunters extortion group claims it breached the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' DAVID driver and vehicle database and stole more than 200,000 records. As evidence it published a screenshot of a Jeffrey Epstein record showing address, Social Security number, date of birth, license number and registered vehicles, and set a September 11 deadline before publication. The group says it obtained access through a password-reset weakness, compromised employee accounts, and queried and downloaded driver records and images. The Florida DMV has not confirmed the claim; it follows a separate confirmed IDScan.net breach exposing over 153 million license scans that prompted an FBI investigation.

They returned 3,400 BTC (about $265 million at ~$78,000 per BTC) to the federation address on September 7, keeping about 598.5 BTC (roughly $47 million). The group called itself white hats, demanded node patches before returning funds, and negotiated via on-chain and PGP-encrypted messages; Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet characterized the arrangement as extortion. Blockstream says the peg-out key and other keys were not compromised, updated software is deployed, and the network remains paused pending a coordinated restart.

Panzer Ransomware Targets Italian Manufacturers and Telecom Firms With ESXi-Ready RaaS

Neither victim had publicly confirmed the incidents when researcher Andrea Fortuna's report was published, and the group's first access method and payload have not been independently analyzed. Panzer posted victims across 11 countries as claimed Italian ransomware incidents reached 212 by September 6, already above 2025's full-year total of 169.

European parliament members call for slowdown of Serbia’s EU entry over spyware use

The Serbian government did not respond to requests for comment.

Attacks begin with email bombing plus IT help desk vishing via Xray-core, followed by SMB/LDAP/WinRM/RDP lateral movement, log clearing, Defender disabling, and exfiltration; the Windows and Linux/ESXi encryptors are built from a single Zig codebase, with shadow copy deletion and VM-killing before encryption.

Cl0p Targets 40+ Organizations Through PTC Windchill Flaw

Cl0p claims over 40 organizations including Shell and Philips were breached by exploiting critical RCE CVE-2026-12569 in PTC Windchill and FlexPLM.

Cl0p claims more than 40 organizations were victimized via CVE-2026-12569 (CVSS 9.3), a critical deserialization-based remote code execution flaw in PTC Windchill PDMlink and FlexPLM, affecting releases prior to 11.0 M030; CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog in June. ReliaQuest found the group deployed a custom web shell that maps vault data, decrypts all credentials in the Windchill keystore, and includes a Java class loader enabling arbitrary code execution, lateral movement, persistence, and large-scale data exfiltration without extra tooling. Named victims include Shell, Philips, Fiserv, Zebra Technologies, Ingersoll Rand, Toast, Mindray, and Apple lens supplier Largan Precision, with stolen data ranging from one gigabyte to multiple terabytes per target. The campaign mirrors Cl0p's earlier mass-exploitation extortion operations against MOVEit, Cleo, GoAnywhere, and Oracle E-Business Suite.
