Nintendo Switch Vulnerability Allows Attackers to Run Unauthorized Code on Your Console

Nintendo patched CVE-2026-82079, a CVSS 7.0 stack buffer overflow in original Switch local wireless allowing nearby code execution via QR-code workflows.

Nintendo patched CVE-2026-82079 (CVSS 4.0 base score 7.0, High), a stack-based buffer overflow in the original Switch's local wireless networking affecting firmware earlier than 23.0.0. An adjacent attacker must scan a QR code displayed by the console, via the Album "Send to Smartphone" feature or Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, before crafted packets can corrupt memory and enable return-oriented programming for arbitrary code execution. EPSS is approximately 0.16%, Switch 2 is not affected, and Nintendo's advisory was published September 10, 2026.

Microsoft Teams is about to make QR code phishing much harder

Microsoft Teams will obscure QR codes from external senders starting October 2026, adding friction against QR-code phishing across Android, desktop, iOS, and Mac.

Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry 570439 describes a Teams feature that obscures images containing QR codes sent by external users, requiring users to reveal them before viewing or scanning. Rollout is expected to begin in October 2026 for Android, desktop, iOS, and Mac. The feature aims to reduce QR code phishing risk, which NordVPN says has redirected more than 26 million users to malicious websites, with 73% of Americans scanning codes without verifying destinations.

Smishing Triad Hackers Use JWR Phishing Kit to Steal Cards, OTPs and Bank Credentialsnew

Group-IB attributes large-scale smishing using the JWR real-time phishing kit to the Smishing Triad's Outsider cluster, harvesting card data, OTPs, and bank credentials.

Group-IB attributes a large-scale SMS phishing campaign to Outsider, an operator sub-cluster within the Smishing Triad phishing-as-a-service ecosystem, using a kit dubbed JWR. The Vue 2-based platform maintains real-time WebSocket communication with operators, enabling them to adapt pages live and harvest roughly 70 PII fields, card data, PINs, OTPs, identity document images, and digital wallet credentials via a dedicated PayPal sub-funnel. Unit 42 previously tied 194,345 malicious domains across 136,933 root domains to the broader operation since January 2024. Defenders can hunt for /api/open/ endpoints, /webSocket/QT/ paths, JWR-prefixed storage artifacts, and a hard-coded WebSocket token.
