The extension you never installed: KREMLIN forges Chrome's own integrity checks to steal banking sessions

Elastic details KREMLIN, a Brazilian banking malware whose malicious Chrome/Edge extension forges Chromium integrity checks to steal sessions.

Elastic Security Labs tracked operation REF9334 and its KREMLIN toolkit, a Brazilian banking malware campaign impersonating twelve banks across seven campaigns since May 2025. The infection chain uses multi-stage obfuscated JavaScript loaders with sandbox checks (file and process counting), scheduled-task persistence, and an Ethereum smart contract acting as a dead-drop resolver for C2 and payload URLs, abusing Archive.org for hosting. The malicious browser extension bypasses Chromium integrity mechanisms by manipulating Secure Preferences and regenerating required HMACs and App-Bound encrypted hashes. Threat Command disrupted over 1,500 infections by registering the kill-switch canary domain.

China-Linked Hackers Chain Chrome Zero-Day With Windows Kernel Flaw in Attacks

Volexity reports China-linked UTA0560 and JungleBamboo chained Chrome zero-day CVE-2026-85046 with kernel flaws to spy on NGOs.

Volexity documented campaigns detected on September 1, 2026, in which China-linked actors UTA0560 and JungleBamboo (APT31) chained CVE-2026-85046 (V8 type confusion), CVE-2026-87491 (WebAssembly sandbox escape), and CVE-2026-85880 (Windows kernel privilege escalation in RtlpCreateServerAcl). Victims were lured via links on legitimate U.S. university sites vulnerable to reflected XSS, then served hidden exploit iframes behind a donation-form image. Although a V8 fix had landed in Chromium's source after private August reporting, Chrome had not yet shipped it, creating a patch gap the actors exploited. The two groups installed distinct payloads: UTA0560 delivered the GRIMWEDGE JScript backdoor via DLL side-loading, while JungleBamboo used the SUPERSTOMP loader to install the LONGTALE credential-stealing Chrome extension disguised as Google Gemini.

Exploitation could enable session theft, unauthorized actions, phishing redirects, or map content manipulation; the patch in 6.4.1 snapshots attributes with Array.from before iterating.

Hackers Weaponize Agentic AI to Automate Reconnaissance, Exploitation and Post-Exploitation

Google GTIG reports threat actors using agentic AI to automate reconnaissance, exploit selection, and credential harvesting, compromising thousands of secrets.

Google Threat Intelligence Group's Q3 2026 AI Threat Tracker documents threat actors operationalizing agentic AI: in one Mandiant investigation, a financially motivated actor built and executed a credential-harvesting operation in under six hours, with an exposed 'Recon' framework managing more than 23,800 harvested secrets including cloud and AI-service API keys. A Chinese-speaking actor tracked as knaithe used a DeepSeek-powered Hermes Agent for automated reconnaissance and vulnerability enumeration, pivoting from Langflow to n8n and enabling manual exploitation of exposed Citrix NetScaler, Marimo, Apache Tomcat, and VPN infrastructure. Operators harvested Citrix session cookies from process memory to bypass MFA, obtained AWS credentials from compromised Marimo instances, and deployed the Go-based NKAbuse backdoor, with reported RCE and data exfiltration. Google notes fully autonomous end-to-end AI attack pipelines have not yet been observed in the wild.

Phishing Campaign Sends Millions of Emails Using Invisible Unicode to Evade Filters

Microsoft warns of a high-volume phishing campaign using invisible Unicode characters to split keywords like 'funding' and evade filters, peaking at 2.37 million daily messages.

Microsoft's Security Research team documented a high-volume phishing operation inserting deprecated Unicode Tags characters (U+E0000-U+E007F) inside financial keywords such as 'funding' so literal-string and regex email filters stop matching them. China-linked Fire Ant backdoored Cisco IOS XR routers, injected TACACS libraries to steal credentials, and rewrote logs across infrastructure targets.

Sygnia reports the China-linked espionage group Fire Ant compromised Cisco IOS XR routers with purpose-built malware, injected a library into the TACACS authentication daemon to capture live credential material, and manipulated syslog so only messages containing 'Health' were logged. The group used GRE tunnel interfaces with no commit history, rewrote wtmp/utmp/btmp login records, and deployed dormant deep backdoors on Linux systems — one disguised as a SentinelOne agent, another activated by raw network traffic carrying a magic string. Code-level overlap with UNC3886 tooling suggests evolution of that China-nexus cluster's TACACS credential-collection techniques, and Fire Ant used compromised infrastructure to scan SSH, RDP and web ports toward high-value networks.

Six Maximum

Cisco patched nine critical flaws, six rated CVSS 10.0, in Crosswork platforms and Secure Workload, none known to be exploited.

Cisco released fixes for nine critical vulnerabilities in its Crosswork platforms and Secure Workload software, discovered during an internal security review that used advanced AI models. Six flaws carry CVSS 10.0 ratings, including SQL injection CVE-2026-20030 and missing authentication CVE-2026-20357 in Crosswork, and access control CVE-2026-20315 and authentication flaws CVE-2026-20317 in Secure Workload. Fixes shipped in Crosswork 7.2.1-SP, Secure Workload 3.10.9.1, and 4.0.4.16. Cisco says no exploitation has been observed.

Isolated-vm Flaw Lets Sandboxed JavaScript Escape to Host for Potential RCE

Critical type-confusion flaw in isolated-vm Node.js sandbox (GHSA-864f-rcv7-6rh4) enables guest-to-host escape and potential RCE; fixed in 6.2.0 and 7.0.1.

Endor Labs researcher Cristian-Alexandru Staicu found a type confusion in the ExternalCopy component's handling of the transferList option in isolated-vm, letting sandboxed JavaScript corrupt host-process memory and escalate from controlled-address crashes to full control-flow hijack of the host, i.e., potential remote code execution. The flaw, tracked as GHSA-864f-rcv7-6rh4 with no CVE yet, affects all versions through 7.0.0 of the library, which sees nearly 1 million npm downloads weekly. It was patched in versions 6.2.0 and 7.0.1 released earlier in August 2026, and full exploit details are withheld to prevent attacks. The V8 Isolate boundary itself held; the failure was in the C++ marshalling code bridging host and guest.
