OpenAI, Anthropic, Google API Flaw Let Weaker AI Models Decode Stronger Models' Reasoning

Researchers show encrypted reasoning blocks in OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google APIs can be replayed to recover hidden reasoning and secrets like API keys.

Researchers demonstrated that encrypted reasoning objects from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google reasoning APIs could be replayed across sessions, users, and models, letting weaker same-family models act as decoders of hidden reasoning. Across 6,708 public agent trajectories they decoded 315,320 thinking blocks and found 704 privacy artifacts from real user sessions, including 62 API keys, 33 passwords, 24 access tokens, and seven private keys. The replayable blocks also enabled invisible prompt-injection proof-of-concepts; the main extraction attack is no longer reproducible as of August 2026 following mitigations, though no vendor has publicly acknowledged the flaw.

Malicious MCP Servers Can Split Instructions to Make AI Coding Agents Exfiltrate Secrets

ASSET Research Group's GhostSplice technique splits malicious instructions across MCP channels, tricking AI coding agents into exfiltrating SSH keys, source code, and secrets.

ASSET Research Group disclosed GhostSplice, a prompt-injection technique in which a malicious Model Context Protocol (MCP) server splits an exfiltration instruction across a tool description and a tool result so no single fragment appears harmful. In the reference implementation, a benign-looking integrity_checker tool with fields alpha through delta is later paired with a project-scan result mapping those fields to .ssh/id_rsa, proprietary source, customers.csv, and .env. Tests across eleven API-tested models showed average compliance rising from 42% to 82% when instructions were split in two, with GPT-4o, Gemini 2.0 Flash, and Llama 3.3 70B going from 0% to 100%. The findings come from controlled lab tests, not a reported real-world intrusion, and no CVE identifiers had been assigned as of August 10, 2026.

Your AI agent's system prompt is not a security control

AWS and SANS guidance says system prompts are not security controls; enforce user permissions at retrieval time and default-deny every agent tool invocation.

AWS VP Gee Rittenhouse and SANS fellow Eric Johnson, with three AWS security specialists, published agentic AI security guidance for organizations with agents running or under development. They recommend scoping queries to user permissions inside existing RBAC/ABAC systems and filtering results before the model's context window, noting prompts can be bypassed, ignored, or overridden. The guidance warns risk concentrates when one agent holds sensitive data access, external communication, and exposure to untrusted content, the vector for prompt injection, which OWASP ranks as the top AI application threat. It cites IBM 2025 research that ungoverned shadow AI added $670,000 to average breach cost, and prescribes 30-day behavioral baselines, Cedar or Open Policy Agent for default-deny tool invocation, and four-layer containment with automatic circuit breakers.

IFM Releases K2 Horizon: Six Apache 2.0 Models From 0.9B to 375B

MBZUAI's IFM released K2 Horizon, six Apache 2.0 models (0.9B-375B) with open training data, code, and checkpoints, claiming the largest fully open-source launch.

The Institute of Foundation Models (IFM), launched by MBZUAI, released K2 Horizon: six Apache 2.0 models (0.9B, 3.7B, 7B, 32B, 36B-A4B, 375B-A23B) shipping with the ~20-trillion-token pretraining corpus, intermediate checkpoints, training code, and logs, which IFM calls the largest fully open-source launch in AI history. The 375B-A23B scores 70.2 on Terminal-Bench 2.1 and 87.3 on GPQA Diamond; the 7B model posts 70.6 on SWE-bench Verified. New techniques include MoVA, which extends MoE routing into attention (36B total, ~4B active), and Uno, a LoRA adapter giving roughly 3x lossless decoding speedup. IFM's own reward-hacking audit re-scored 375B-A23B from 70.2% to 66.9% after flagging 24 of 712 Terminal-Bench trials.

GPT-6 Astra Scores 100% on ExploitBench as OpenAI Blocks PoC Exploit Requests

OpenAI releases GPT-6 Astra, scoring 100% on ExploitBench, but restricts it to secure code review by blocking PoC exploit generation.

OpenAI officially unveiled GPT-6 Astra days after the model reached the "Critical" cybersecurity capability threshold under its Preparedness Framework. The model claims 100% on ExploitBench (versus 78.5% for GPT-5.6 Sol), 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4, and 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, and demonstrated exploit development including on two zero-days disclosed between June and August 2026. The released version is limited to secure code review and patching and refuses proof-of-concept exploit requests, with less restrictive safeguards planned via OpenAI Daybreak. OpenAI also launched a $1 billion "Daybreak for Frontline Defenders" program for critical infrastructure sectors and a pilot with the US MS-ISAC for public sector and water system defenders.

OpenAI targets small utilities with $1 billion cyber defense initiative

OpenAI commits $1 billion to Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, subsidizing frontier cyber AI access and training for small utilities, governments, and critical infrastructure operators.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman announced Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, a $1 billion global commitment expanding subsidized access to Daybreak cyber models, training, and technical support. Daybreak for America will target small water and electricity providers, local governments, and banks, including a pilot with the MS-ISAC for state, local, tribal, and territorial defenders. The Daybreak Defense Network brings more than 35 enterprise partner products into the program, and attendees at OpenAI's utility summit represent 40 states serving over half the US population. Security experts welcomed the effort but cautioned that OT environments still need human-led implementation and testing before AI tooling can be safely rolled out.
