Cybercrooks trawl Fishbrain to net password hashes

Fishing app Fishbrain disclosed a breach exposing names, emails, and password hashes with salts for users of its 20-million-member platform.

Fishbrain AB disclosed to the California Attorney General's Office that attackers accessed user data on August 19, 2026, taking names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, usernames, country information, password hashes, and salts. The company said passwords were not stored in plaintext but some hashes may be susceptible to cracking; it patched the exploited vulnerability, reset all user passwords, and restricted access to the affected environment. Fishbrain, which claims more than 20 million users, did not disclose how many accounts were affected or which hashing algorithm was used.

Structural Jailbreaks Generalize but Do Not Compound: A cross-provider and multilingual study of Involuntary In-Context Learning

Researchers show IICL structural jailbreaks generalize to Google Gemini, lifting attack success to 80-100% on harm and financial benchmarks; non-English prompts attenuate it.

The study red-teams two Google Gemini models with Involuntary In-Context Learning (IICL), a structural jailbreak reframing harmful requests as the final cell of a data-labeling task. IICL lifts attack success from at most 6.7% to 80-90% on HarmBench and 97-100% on financial abuse (FinProof), an order of magnitude above prior results on OpenAI's GPT-5.4. Against a compounding hypothesis, forcing IICL output into Spanish, Hindi, or Arabic attenuates the attack in 11 of 12 conditions, attributed to a 'relevance curse' producing lower-quality harmful content in lower-resource languages. Findings replicate under an independent non-Google judge (Cohen's kappa 0.86 over 377 paired verdicts).

MantaxOtax Android Malware Combines Ransomware With Spyware

Zimperium analyzed MantaxOtax Android malware combining AES file encryption with extensive spying, linked to Indonesian actors and distributed via sideloading.

Zimperium's zLabs published a technical analysis of MantaxOtax, an Android malware family that combines ransomware-style file encryption with comprehensive spyware, linked to Indonesian threat actors and distributed via sideloaded APKs on a third-party file-sharing service. The malware requests device administrator, SMS, contacts, storage and Accessibility permissions, resolves its C2 domain dynamically from a GitHub repository, and encrypts files with AES using per-device keys derived from the Android ID on Android 9 and earlier. It steals WhatsApp messages, Telegram credentials, OTPs and other data, and uses MediaProjection for screenshots and screen recording staged on Catbox; a second variant adds WebSocket C2 with persistent screen locking and app blocking.

New Python-Based Payload MechaFlounder Used by Chafer

Unit 42 identified MechaFlounder, a new Python backdoor used by the Chafer group to target a Turkish government entity via HTTP-based C2.

Unit 42 reports that in November 2018 the Chafer group targeted a Turkish government entity, reusing the win10-update[.]com infrastructure reported earlier in 2018 by ClearSky. The new secondary payload, tracked as MechaFlounder, is Python compiled with PyInstaller and acts as a backdoor supporting file upload/download and command execution. It beacons over HTTP using anomalous GET requests containing the username and hostname, suggesting a custom C2 server rather than a standard web server. Code overlap with OilRig's Clayside VBScript was noted, but Chafer and OilRig remain tracked as separate groups.

Researchers Build WeChat Zero-Click Worm Hijacking Phones via Calls

Calif researchers built WeWorm, a zero-click worm exploiting a WeChat VoIP memory-corruption RCE that Tencent has now patched.

Calif researchers found a memory corruption flaw in WeChat's VoIP stack in July using LLM-assisted analysis and built working exploits within two days, then integrated them into WeWorm, which they call the first zero-click worm spreading through WeChat calls on iOS and Android. A crafted incoming call yields remote code execution with no user interaction, giving full control of the victim's WeChat account; the attacker only needs to be on the victim's friend list, easily achieved by compromising a contact first. Tencent confirmed the bug and shipped patches in WeChat Android 8.0.77 and iOS 8.0.76, and chaining with other OS bugs could yield full device control.
