Mass-Scanning Campaign Exploits Vite Flaw to Extract Cloud Credentials From Exposed Dev Servers

Mass-scanning campaign exploits CVE-2026-39364 in exposed Vite dev servers to steal AWS/Azure credentials, .env files, and Terraform state.

F5 Labs documented an August 2026 credential-harvesting campaign exploiting CVE-2026-39364 (CVSS 8.2), a Vite flaw allowing unauthenticated attackers to bypass server.fs.deny via query parameters like ?raw and ?import&raw. Attackers issue GET requests to /@fs/ endpoints to retrieve .env files, AWS and Azure credentials, terraform.tfstate, serverless.yml, and /proc data from dev servers exposed via --host or misconfigured Docker port mappings. Requests impersonate crawlers like Googlebot, ClaudeBot, and GPTBot, forge X-Forwarded-For headers, and largely originate from GCP ranges in the US, Belgium, Netherlands, Singapore, and Taiwan.

SAP Patches Critical Extended Passport Processing Vulnerability

SAP patches CVSS 10.0 flaw CVE-2026-44756 (OVERPASS) enabling unauthenticated RCE in S/4HANA and NetWeaver, plus three other criticals; no in-the-wild exploitation reported.

CVE-2026-44756 is a CVSS 10.0 memory corruption flaw in Extended Passport (EPP) deserialization, triggered when a user session opens across web, SAP GUI, and RFC vectors. Exploitation yields command execution as the SAP OS account, database credential and password hash recovery, session reading, and data or binary modification; affected products include S/4HANA, ERP/ECC, NetWeaver, Web Dispatcher, and BW/4HANA. Three other criticals were patched: CVE-2026-58240 (S4GET, missing authentication affecting all S/4HANA 2025 and earlier releases), CVE-2026-76969 (CAP credential disclosure), and CVE-2026-66768 (NetWeaver access control). Onapsis and SAP report no indicators of in-the-wild exploitation.

2026-011: Critical Vulnerabilities in SAP Kernel and NetWeaver Message Server

SAP patched two critical flaws, OVERPASS (CVE-2026-44756, CVSS 10.0) and S4GET (CVE-2026-58240), allowing unauthenticated attackers to execute OS commands on SAP hosts.

On SAP's September 2026 Security Patch Day, SAP released Security Notes 3747649 and 3759472 fixing two critical unauthenticated remote vulnerabilities found by Onapsis. CVE-2026-44756 ('OVERPASS', CVSS 10.0) is a memory corruption flaw in Extended Passport (EPP) deserialisation in the SAP Kernel; CVE-2026-58240 ('S4GET', CVSS 9.8) is a missing authentication check in the NetWeaver Message Server that lets attackers register as trusted cluster nodes. Successful exploitation of either can yield OS command execution as the SAP service account, leading to full system and business data compromise, and CERT-EU urges immediate patching. No in-the-wild exploitation is reported.

Chrome adopts what may be the best protection yet against account takeovers

Chrome adopts device-bound session credentials that tie login sessions to a specific device, defending against cookie-theft account takeover attacks.

Chrome is adopting device-bound session credentials, which bind authenticated sessions to the physical device rather than to transferable cookies. The mechanism targets a common account takeover technique in which attackers steal session cookies and replay them on other machines. Ars Technica characterizes it as possibly the strongest protection yet against this class of takeover, which has become increasingly common.

New AI Attack Hides Malicious Instructions in Normal-Looking Text to Evade Safety Filters

Check Point researchers show crafted prose hides policy-violating instructions that bypass all tested LLM gatekeepers, including GPT-4o mini and Llama Guard 3.

A new prompt-crafting technique embeds malicious payloads inside grammatical, natural-looking text without Base64, invisible Unicode, or obvious encodings, defeating lightweight pre-screening gatekeepers. In testing, all four evaluated gatekeeper models—gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18, gpt-oss-safeguard:20b, claude-3-haiku-20240307, and llama-guard3:8b—classified the crafted wrappers as safe at a 100% bypass rate across 23 obfuscated prompts. GPT-5 Thinking in high-reasoning mode recovered and acted on the hidden instruction in 17 of 18 tests (~94.4%), often spending over a minute and multiple Python executions. Researchers recommend paraphrasing untrusted input, hardening gatekeeper policies, and applying defense-in-depth controls for agentic deployments.

CVE-2026-82311: Apache Airflow FAB provider: FAB password reset never invalidates sessions: string/int _user_id comparison is always false

Apache Airflow FAB provider 2.4.2-3.8.x password reset never deletes sessions because a string/int _user_id comparison is always false.

CVE-2026-82311 affects apache-airflow-providers-fab versions 2.4.2 before 3.9.0. Resetting a user's password fails to delete that user's existing database-backed sessions despite documented behavior saying it does. The cleanup compares the string identifier Flask-Login stores in the session against the user's integer database identifier, so the comparison always evaluates false. Severity is rated moderate.

Accountability in Certificate Transparency and Variants

Formal Dolev-Yao analysis shows plain Certificate Transparency requires an honest log, SCT Auditing removes that assumption, and Gossiping does not.

The paper analyzes accountability in Certificate Transparency and its SCT Auditing and Gossiping extensions in the Dolev-Yao model, starting from a vanilla PKI. It finds plain CT provides accountability only under the assumption of an honest log. The SCT Auditing extension can eliminate that assumption, while the Gossiping extension cannot. CT is supported by all major browsers and obliges Certificate Authorities to record issued certificates in public, monitored logs.

Flextype v1.0.0-alpha.3 NULL access_token Authentication Bypass

Flextype CMS v1.0.0-alpha.3 API endpoints accept a NULL access_token because isset() validation lets requests bypass authentication.

Flextype CMS v1.0.0-alpha.3 API endpoints can declare access_token as a required parameter, but required-parameter validation only verifies the key exists in the request data. Authentication is then verified inside an isset($data['access_token']) condition, which in PHP treats a NULL value as absent. This allows requests supplying a NULL access_token to bypass authentication on affected endpoints. The flaw was disclosed on the Full Disclosure mailing list on September 3, 2026.

Why Johnny Can't Encrypt: A Usability Evaluation of PGP 5.0 (1999)

Seminal 1999 USENIX study finds most novice users cannot correctly sign and encrypt email with PGP 5.0 in 90 minutes.

Whitten and Tygar's USENIX Security Symposium paper evaluates whether cryptography novices can use PGP 5.0 effectively, using cognitive walkthrough analysis and a laboratory user test. The majority of test participants failed to successfully sign and encrypt a message within 90 minutes, despite PGP 5.0 having a well-regarded graphical interface. The authors argue that security requires usability standards beyond those of general consumer software and propose domain-specific UI design principles for security. The paper is a foundational reference in usable security research.

Robust Coverless Linguistic Steganography via Sentence Embedding Space with Global Resynchronization

Researchers propose a coverless steganographic framework encoding messages as hierarchical clustering paths in sentence embedding space with a Global Resynchronization Mechanism for robustness.

An arXiv paper proposes encoding secret messages as hierarchical clustering paths in the sentence embedding space rather than token space, improving decoding stability against word- and sentence-level textual perturbations. A Global Resynchronization Mechanism (GRM) reframes variable-length bitstreams as discrete symbols anchored to semantic subspaces to prevent bit-slippage. Experiments show substantial robustness improvements while maintaining embedding capacity and resistance to statistical analysis.

Signal's new security feature checks if your encrypted chats were tampered with

Signal adds automatic key verification, a key-transparency system audited by Cloudflare and Trail of Bits that detects key-directory tampering in E2EE chats.

Signal launched automatic key verification, a key-transparency system that confirms a phone number or username remains bound to a consistent encryption key across Signal's key directory. Cloudflare and Trail of Bits independently audit the system, with cryptographic protection preventing auditors from seeing users' identifiers in plaintext. The feature mitigates key substitution by a compromised directory or privileged insider, though it currently requires the contact's phone number and users can fall back to manual Safety Number verification.

Credential Theft: How Attackers Steal & Use Stolen Credentials

Huntress explains how attackers steal credentials through phishing, AitM, infostealers, and dumping, then use them for lateral movement, BEC, and ransomware.

Huntress published an educational overview of credential theft, citing that roughly 70% of confirmed data breaches begin with stolen credentials. It details acquisition methods including phishing, adversary-in-the-middle attacks that capture MFA session tokens, infostealers (nearly a quarter of threats Huntress observed in 2025), Mimikatz-based credential dumping, credential stuffing, and password spraying. The piece then covers post-theft actions such as lateral movement, privilege escalation, account takeover, business email compromise, and ransomware, and closes with behavioral detection guidance and layered prevention strategies.

Certificate Transparency Monitoring is now generally available

Cloudflare's Certificate Transparency Monitoring is now generally available, and it no longer alerts on certificates Cloudflare issued for your own domains.

Cloudflare announced general availability of its Certificate Transparency Monitoring service. The key behavioral change is that alerts are no longer generated for certificates that Cloudflare itself issued for a customer's domains, so any alert received now indicates a certificate issued by another certificate authority. Defenders can use the service to detect mis-issued or unauthorized TLS certificates for their domains.

Critical Flaw in NASA/JPL Open-Source Spacecraft Command Software Allowed Unauthenticated Command Execution

NASA/JPL's AIT-GUI web console (CVSS 9.4) lacked authentication and CSRF protection, letting anyone send unauthenticated commands to spacecraft instruments; fixed in 2.5.2.

Cycode researchers found that AIT-GUI, the browser console of NASA/JPL's open-source AMMOS Instrument Toolkit, ran an HTTP server with no authentication, no session checks, and no CSRF protection on state-changing endpoints, allowing arbitrary commands to spacecraft instruments. The issue combines four weaknesses: binding to 0.0.0.0 regardless of configured host, missing authentication, missing CSRF defense, and path traversal in the /seq and /script/run endpoints. Tracked as GHSA-p9r8-2q67-fp86 with CVSS 9.4, it is fixed in AIT-GUI 2.5.2. The findings came from AI-assisted code analysis confirmed with working proofs-of-concept, including a headless-browser CSRF demonstration.

Rare Not Random Using Token Efficiency for Secrets Scanning

Researcher proposes token efficiency (string length divided by BPE token count) as a better post-regex filter than entropy for secrets scanning, validated on CredData.

The post explores whether Byte-Pair Encoding tokenization can replace Shannon entropy as the primary filter for candidate secrets captured by regex in tools like Gitleaks. It defines 'token efficiency' as string length divided by token count under the cl100k_base tokenizer; secret-like strings such as GitHub tokens tokenize into many small tokens and score low, while natural text scores high. Evaluating labeled secrets from the CredData dataset shows a usable separation, with roughly 2.5 suggested as a minimum cutoff versus Gitleaks' 3.5 entropy threshold. The technique is positioned as a post-regex filtering step rather than a standalone detector.

UK Government Enables Passkey Login for 23 Million Users to Fight Phishing Attacks

UK Government enables optional passkey login for GOV.UK One Login, offering 23 million users phishing-resistant FIDO authentication.

The UK government has rolled out passkey authentication for GOV.UK One Login, the single sign-on for services like tax, State Pension, and driver's license renewals, available to over 23 million users. Passkeys are device-bound, unlocked via fingerprint, Face ID, or device PIN, and the government reports they are up to eight times faster than password plus two-step verification. During the initial trial over 300,000 users adopted passkeys, with nearly one in ten daily sign-ins already using them, saving roughly £600 per day in SMS costs. The NCSC endorses passkeys as phishing-resistant credentials that cannot be intercepted or reused, and biometric data never leaves the user's device.

CISA and NIST Issue Guidance to Protect Cloud Identity Tokens

CISA and NIST published Interagency Report 8587 with voluntary guidance to harden cloud identity tokens against theft, forgery, and lateral movement.

CISA and NIST released NIST Interagency Report 8587 on September 15 with final voluntary guidance for federal agencies, cloud providers, and their customers on protecting SSO, federation, and API tokens. Requirements include one-hour maximum token lifetimes, 90-day signing key rotation for high-impact systems, hardware-backed key storage, explicit audience fields, and keeping tokens out of logs. The guidance was motivated by the 2020 ADFS compromise where forged SAML assertions bypassed MFA, and an incident where a leaked consumer signing key enabled token forgery and theft of 60,000+ emails from one agency. Nearly 250 public comments shaped the text, with input from Google, Microsoft, Okta, AWS, Oracle, IBM, HashiCorp, Wiz, and the OpenID Foundation via the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative.
