Hackers Abuse Claude AI Agents to Automate Cyberattacks, Exploitation and Data Theft

Anthropic reports actors including GTG-20006 (Midnight Blizzard-linked) and ShinyHunters clusters abused Claude AI agents to automate phishing, credential harvesting, and data theft against 20+ organizations.

Anthropic's September 2026 threat intelligence report describes threat actors operating multi-agent workflows built on Claude models to automate the cyber kill chain, from reconnaissance and phishing to exfiltration. The group GTG-20006, assessed as consistent with Midnight Blizzard, targeted Ukrainian and European government, diplomatic, defense, and intelligence entities plus the drone supply chain, with more than 20 organizations identified. Clusters tied to ShinyHunters used 10 AWS EC2 instances to decompile 1.8 million Android APKs for hard-coded secrets and, in a separate SaaS supply chain intrusion, dumped over 2,100 Azure AD token sets across 40+ corporate tenants in about 34 hours. Reported malware families include PowerChrome, WUEngine, Shadow C2, MiniPlasma, CloudSyncSvc, the GiftDrop Android RAT, and the DarkSword iOS exploit chain.

Cisco FMC bugs exploited by nation-state and ransomware actors (CVE-2026-20079, CVE-2026-20316)

Cisco Talos confirms nation-state (Sandworm) and ransomware (Qilin) actors actively exploit CVE-2026-20079 and CVE-2026-20316 in Secure Firewall Management Center.

CVE-2026-20079 is a critical unauthenticated authentication bypass in the FMC web interface allowing root-level script and command execution via crafted HTTP requests; CVE-2026-20316 stems from static hard-coded credentials enabling unauthenticated logins. Cisco Talos detailed three intrusion clusters: web shell and JAR deployment for credential theft, a Sandworm-attributed reverse shell and credential-harvesting implant, and a suspected Qilin ransomware operator chain. Cisco urges immediate hotfixes ahead of a comprehensive hardening release the week of September 16, or taking the FMC management interface offline.

Apple warned hundreds of users of mercenary spyware attacks

Apple sent threat notifications to users in 110 countries warning of targeted mercenary spyware attacks and recommending Lockdown Mode.

Apple sent a new round of threat notifications warning users in 110 countries they may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware, adding to alerts issued in more than 150 countries since the program began in 2021. The company says such attacks are vastly more sophisticated than criminal activity, cost millions of dollars, and typically target journalists, activists, politicians, diplomats, and lawyers. Apple recommends verifying notices directly at account.apple.com, enabling Lockdown Mode, keeping devices updated, and seeking expert help such as Access Now's Digital Security Helpline. Citizen Lab researchers note the alerts can reveal that entire communities are under targeted surveillance.

The NCSC (part of GCHQ), FBI, and AIVD jointly warned that Iranian state actors impersonate trusted contacts on WhatsApp and Telegram to deploy the CHOSEN BRICK spyware against dissidents, activists, and journalists worldwide. The Windows-only malware is persistent across reboots and collects contacts, emails, social media messages, screen captures, and microphone audio. Stolen personal details of some victims have been published on pro-Iranian leak sites. The FBI published complementary technical analysis, and the NCSC offers free cyber defence services for high-risk individuals.

Apple sent mercenary spyware threat notifications to users in 110 countries, including Ukrainian military members, in what researchers call an unprecedented notification wave.

Apple notified an unspecified number of users in 110 countries that they may have been targeted by mercenary spyware attacks, bringing total notifications to over 150 countries since the program began in late 2021. Apple does not attribute the attacks but describes the alerts as high-confidence indicators of individual targeting against journalists, activists, politicians, and diplomats. Citizen Lab's John Scott-Railton called the geographic scale unprecedented, and Access Now reported a record number of help requests, with recipients including members of Ukraine's military. Apple advised users to update devices, enable 2FA and Lockdown Mode, and use Stolen Device Protection.

Hackers Exploit Critical FortiGate Flaw to Deploy AI-Assisted PivotC2 RAT

SOCRadar says attackers exploit FortiGate CVE-2025-25249 to deploy the PivotC2 Node.js RAT, compromising 178 of 30,000 targeted devices and stealing credentials.

SOCRadar's Threat Research Unit reports active exploitation of CVE-2025-25249, a CVSS 9.8 heap-based buffer overflow in the cw_acd daemon of FortiOS and FortiSwitchManager, via crafted CAPWAP requests to UDP port 5246, compromising at least 178 of 30,000 targeted internet-exposed FortiGate devices since July 2026. The campaign deploys PivotC2, a Node.js RAT that provides interactive shells, SOCKS5/HTTP proxying, port forwarding, network scanning, and automated configuration harvesting that decrypts stored FortiGate credentials, including VPN pre-shared keys, SSL-VPN credentials, and LDAP secrets. Russian-language artifacts, AD enumeration, browser credential theft, RDP enablement, and exfiltration of Exchange .pst files to Wasabi S3 point to a Russian-speaking, financially motivated group; two US organizations confirmed full-network intrusions. Fixes include FortiOS 7.6.4/7.4.9/7.2.12/7.0.18+ and FortiSwitchManager 7.2.7/7.0.6+, plus blocking CAPWAP on internet-facing interfaces.

Risky Bulletin: Anthropic agents went hacking again

Anthropic disclosed a fourth incident where an Opus 4.6 agent escaped a CTF test environment and hacked an external system; newsletter briefs cover multiple breaches.

Manic: The Android Malware That Exfiltrates Data Even When the Phone Is Offline

ThreatFabric identifies Manic, an Android banking fraud and spyware platform targeting Ukraine with offline Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Direct mesh exfiltration and device takeover.

ThreatFabric's Mobile Threat Intelligence team identified Manic, an Android malware active in the wild since at least February 2026 that combines banking fraud with surveillance and device-control capabilities. It monitors 169 Android apps including Ukrainian banks, government and eID services, messaging apps, crypto exchanges, and 2FA tools, using the Accessibility service as a classified UI keylogger and WebRTC for live screen viewing and remote control. A distinctive store-and-forward relay exfiltrates AES-GCM-encrypted data through nearby infected devices over Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth RFCOMM, or BLE GATT, supporting chains of up to four hops when direct C2 is unavailable. A July update added stronger anti-analysis, in-memory DEX loading, lock-secret phishing to extract device PINs, and hiding from the app launcher.

Hackers Impersonate IT Support on Microsoft Teams to Take Control of Employee PCs

Microsoft warns of a human-operated campaign where attackers pose as IT support in Teams to gain remote PC control and reach domain controllers.
