Sandworm-Linked Cyclops Blink Returns With Network Scanning and Packet-Sniffing Capabilities

Sophos uncovers a 64-bit Cyclops Blink variant on hacked Cisco FMC appliances, adding internal network scanning and selective packet capture; linked to Sandworm.

Sophos CTU analyzed a new 64-bit x86-64 Cyclops Blink implant (timezone_check) deployed on Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center appliances compromised via CVE-2026-20079 authentication bypass and CVE-2026-20316 low-privileged login. The activity is assessed with high confidence as Russian-nexus, with a moderate-confidence link to Sandworm (IRON VIKING, also tracked as Seashell Blizzard). The implant runs a parent controller plus five worker modules, masquerades as [kworker/0:1], persists via SysV init scripts at /lib/tz/timezone_check, and beacons to hard-coded C2 89.34.96.56 over a custom TLS protocol on ports 43856 and 49172. New module 0x11 scans internal IPv4 networks for SSH, SMB, LDAP, VMware, HTTP/HTTPS and VPN services, while module 0x12 performs filtered packet capture that can expose cleartext credentials, cookies and tokens.

Researcher Drops New Microsoft Defender PoC Showing ShieldBreak Patch Can Be Bypassed

Researcher Chaotic Eclipse released a PoC showing CVE-2026-69414's patch is bypassable, allowing arbitrary file reads as SYSTEM on current Windows.

The researcher known as Chaotic Eclipse published a proof-of-concept for a zero-day in Microsoft Defender, dubbed ShieldCrash, assessed as a patch bypass for ShieldBreak (CVE-2026-69414, CVSS 7.8). The PoC demonstrates an arbitrary file read as SYSTEM with the latest Windows installed, and all supported desktop versions are said to be impacted. Microsoft patched the original issue in Microsoft Malware Protection Engine 1.1.26080.3, which updates automatically. The same researcher recently released PoCs for flaws in CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor, Kaspersky, Avast Antivirus and NVIDIA.

Johannes Ullrich of SANS Internet Storm Center captured roughly 300 packets from a macOS 27 'Golden Gate' system before user login, covering DHCP, IPv6 duplicate address discovery, DNS, and TCP behavior. macOS 27 resolves hostnames like albert.apple.com (device activation, certificate-pinned), push messaging hosts, and ipv4only.arpa for NAT64 networks. The OS still uses a TCP window scale of 6, ECN, and random timestamps, with only four TCP connections observed during boot. The analysis provides a reference baseline for security teams monitoring Apple endpoints.

CISA's Update A to ICSA-26-183-01 covers ST Engineering iDirect iQ-Series, 3315-Series and 9-Series terminals at firmware <=4.5.2.1, deployed across communications, defense, energy and transportation. CVE-2026-38059 exposes unauthenticated /api/identity and /api/ endpoints leaking serial number, DID, TPK, MAC address and firmware version, potentially enabling terminal impersonation; CVE-2026-38057 is a CSRF flaw letting an attacker force terminal reboots and satellite link loss via /api/reboot. CVE-2026-38056 enables local privilege escalation using the factory-configured technician account (CVSS 3.1 8.8, CVSS 4.0 9.4), and CVE-2026-38058 exposes crackable MD5-crypt root password hashes. Dell disclosed three critical vulnerabilities in Secure Connect Gateway 5.0 appliance and application deployments. CVE-2026-80172 (CVSS 9.8) lets unauthenticated attackers replay captured requests, which lack nonce validation and time limits, to repeatedly mint administrator access and refresh tokens. CVE-2026-61410 (9.4) is a missing-authorization flaw enabling unauthenticated remote command execution, and CVE-2026-80238 (9.3) is an exposed Docker socket allowing local privilege escalation to root and container escape. Fixes ship in appliance 5.36.00.16 and application 5.36.00.00.

Cisco UCS and UCS-Based Appliances UEFI Shell Secure Boot Bypass Vulnerability

Cisco disclosed a UEFI Secure Boot bypass in UCS servers and UCS-based appliances letting authenticated or physically present attackers execute unauthorized software.

Cisco published an advisory for a vulnerability in the UEFI Shell implementation of UCS servers and UCS-based appliances. Memory write commands remain available in the UEFI Shell while Secure Boot is enabled, allowing an attacker to modify UEFI memory and bypass validation checks to run unauthorized software. Exploitation requires either valid credentials for a user or admin account, or unauthenticated physical access to select the UEFI Shell boot option at boot time. The issue affects firmware boot integrity rather than the running operating system.

Cisco patched CVE-2026-20212 (CVSS 9.8), a flaw in the Silicon One integration for Nexus 9000 Series switches that lets unauthenticated remote attackers execute code with root privileges. TCP ports 43210 and 43211 are exposed through the default Layer 3 VRF, and exploitation can also crash the S1HAL process, forcing device reloads. Cisco TAC discovered the flaw during a support case; PSIRT is not aware of public disclosure or malicious exploitation. Workarounds include infrastructure ACLs or blocking the exposed ports, alongside a Live Protect shield pending fixed NX-OS upgrades.

CERT/CC details VU#718077: UEFI Shell embedded in SPI flash lets attackers bypass Secure Boot and execute pre-boot code; patches issued.

CERT/CC's VU#718077, reported by Eclypsium researcher Stas Lyakhov, describes how a UEFI Shell embedded in SPI flash can be abused by attackers who can modify UEFI boot configuration, creating multiple boot entries that bypass controls preventing the Shell from launching under Secure Boot. The Shell's dmem and mm commands allow arbitrary physical memory read/write, letting attackers overwrite Secure Boot values and execute unauthorized pre-boot code that can persist across reboots and OS reinstalls while degrading EDR effectiveness. AMI confirmed its Aptio UEFI BDS module is affected (CVE-2026-33197), and Cisco published an advisory for a variation affecting UCS Servers and UCS-based appliances (CVE-2026-20293). Firmware patches are being rolled out through OEM and IBV BIOS build pipelines.

Citrix patched NetScaler ADC/Gateway: auth bypass CVE-2026-19490 (CVSS 9.3) on Gateway/AAA configs and memory overflow CVE-2026-19489 (CVSS 8.8) requiring SIP ALG.

On 19 August 2026 Citrix published an advisory fixing two critical-severity issues in NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway versions 14.1 before 14.1-73.32 and 13.1 before 13.1-63.21, plus FIPS/NDcPP builds. CVE-2026-19490 (CVSS 9.3) is an authentication bypass via alternate path, exploitable when the appliance is configured as a Gateway (SSL VPN, ICA Proxy, CVPN, RDP Proxy) or AAA virtual server, with a SAML action condition on newer builds. CVE-2026-19489 (CVSS 8.8) is a memory overflow causing unpredictable behaviour or denial of service, requiring SIP ALG enabled on a Large Scale NAT group. CERT-EU recommends applying updated builds as soon as possible.

O-CMS 1.0.0 has an authenticated OS command injection in the ai_cli_script parameter, letting privileged attackers execute arbitrary commands.

O-CMS version 1.0.0 contains an authenticated OS command injection vulnerability in its AI CLI configuration functionality. An authenticated attacker with sufficient privileges can supply shell metacharacters and extra commands through the ai_cli_script parameter of /admin/settings/save. The attacker-controlled CLI value is then executed when the configured AI provider is tested via /admin/settings/test-ai.

ConnectWise Patches ScreenConnect Vulnerability Exploited in Worm-Like Attacks

ConnectWise patched critical ScreenConnect flaw CVE-2026-84869 (CVSS 9.9) exploited since August 20 in worm-like attacks; CISA added it to KEV.

ConnectWise released urgent patches for CVE-2026-84869 (CVSS 9.9), a missing authorization and improper privilege management flaw in ScreenConnect allowing file transfer and execution through active remote sessions without host confirmation. Huntress reported in-the-wild exploitation since August 20, with attackers using rogue ScreenConnect clients to push four VBScript files for persistence and worm-like propagation to other ScreenConnect clients. Tozed ZLT X300 5G CPE router firmware 6.01.3 contains an OS command injection (CWE-78) in the TR-069/CWMP client daemon netcwmpd, tracked as CVE-2026-2035703 with CVSS 9.8. The IPPingDiagnostics Host parameter is passed unsanitized into sprintf, and the resulting shell command executes via system_by_root() as root. An attacker operating a rogue LTE base station built from roughly $300 of SDR hardware can impersonate the carrier's Auto Configuration Server and inject arbitrary commands. The disclosure does not report any observed exploitation.

Active exploitation of Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center vulnerabilities

Cisco Talos reports in-the-wild exploitation of critical FMC flaw CVE-2026-20079 by three clusters including a Sandworm-linked APT and Qilin ransomware affiliates.

Cisco Talos is tracking active exploitation of CVE-2026-20079 (CVSS 10.0), an authentication bypass in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center that lets unauthenticated remote attackers execute scripts and obtain root access, and CVE-2026-20316 (CVSS 5.3), which permits low-privileged logins and can be chained for privilege escalation. Talos identified three post-compromise clusters: UAT-12197 deploying JSP web shells and a JAR command executor for credential theft; UAT-11823, an APT overlapping with Sandworm, deploying a Netcat reverse shell and Cyclops Blink malware; and UAT-11988, assessed as a ransomware operator with TTPs consistent with Qilin affiliates. Hotfixes are available, with a comprehensive hardening release due the week of September 14, 2026.
