Non-Zero-Day VPN Flaw Left Japan ‘s Government Shared Network Platform Exposed: 246,000 Records at Risk

Japan's Digital Agency says attackers exploited a patchable VPN flaw to access a government shared platform, exposing records of ~246,000 employees across 23 ministries.

Japan's Digital Agency disclosed that attackers exploited a medium-severity, already-patchable vulnerability in a VPN device to access the Government Solution Service (GSS), potentially leaking personal data of roughly 246,000 government employees, officials, and contractors across 23 ministries. The intrusion was detected on June 25 and confirmed as VPN exploitation on July 9, with public disclosure 78 days after detection. Exposed data includes about 236,000 names, 231,000 email addresses, 94,000 phone numbers, and 1,000 physical addresses; no My Number, bank account, or pension numbers were included. The compromised maintenance staff account was suspended and the compromised hardware isolated, but the VPN product and flaw were not disclosed.

Lightweight Zero Trust via Automotive SDN

Researchers map automotive SDN with MACsec/MKA and CORECONF/YANG to NIST SP 800-207, satisfying five of seven Zero Trust tenets without added infrastructure.

Zonal in-vehicle networks ship Ethernet, MACsec, and TSN but treat the network itself as trusted, with no standardized runtime way to revoke access, rotate keys, or contain a compromised ECU. The paper first analyzes what Open Alliance TC17 v1.0 MACsec/MKA with pre-shared CAKs already provides against the seven NIST SP 800-207 Zero Trust tenets. It then adds CORECONF/YANG management per Open Alliance TC19, mapping the SDN Controller and Agents one-to-one onto NIST's PE, PA, and PEP, and instantiates a YANG-based network-access-control flow and key-management scheme. The result fully covers five of the seven tenets and partially covers two, without any ZTA-specific infrastructure.

HybridFLow: SDN-Orchestrated Client Partitioning for Hybrid Federated Learning

HybridFLow uses SDN topology visibility to partition federated-learning clients into sync/async groups, reaching 80% accuracy 33-40% faster than SmartFLow.

HybridFLow is a closed-loop, SDN-driven orchestration framework for hybrid federated learning that integrates network-layer intelligence into cross-silo training. It leverages the SDN controller's global topology view to generate calibrated per-client communication-time estimates, partitioning clients into synchronous and asynchronous groups while balancing round latency and update staleness, with measured times fed back after each round. Across multiple network topologies it reaches 80% target accuracy 33-40% faster than SmartFLow and cuts average round duration by 30-40 seconds, while FedAsync fails to reach target accuracy under non-IID data.

Confused about which VPN is right, US senator asks the NSA for guidance

Senator Ron Wyden asked the NSA to update public guidance on VPN configurations, questioning single-hop designs and services like Tor.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) sent a letter Wednesday to NSA director Gen. Joshua Rudd requesting updated public guidance on VPN best practices for Americans facing advanced foreign threats, including government personnel, contractors, and journalists. The letter highlights limitations such as decrypted traffic at single-hop termination servers, metadata like timestamps enabling nation-state profiling, and asks the NSA to assess multi-hop architectures, random delays, cryptographic padding, and specific services including Apple Private Relay, Nym, and Tor.

Wyden seeks upgraded NSA security guidance on commercial VPN use

Senator Ron Wyden asked the NSA to update public guidance on commercial VPN security risks and answer questions about foreign surveillance threats against single-hop VPNs.

Sen. Ron Wyden sent a letter to NSA Director Gen. Joshua Rudd urging the agency to revise public guidance on commercial VPNs, following earlier letters to federal agencies in March and July. He argues single-hop VPNs offer little protection against sophisticated adversaries able to compel or compromise the single provider, citing a Congressional Research Service paper favoring multi-hop and mixnet architectures. The letter references a September NSA advisory on a China-sponsored campaign against telecom, government and military networks and asks unclassified questions about multi-hop systems such as Apple Private Relay, Tor and Nym versus mixnets.

TP-Link Tapo Camera Flaw Lets Attackers Gain Admin Access Without Password

Two flaws in TP-Link Tapo C200 cameras allow network-adjacent admin access without a password (CVE-2026-15315) or DoS (CVE-2026-15316); fixed in V5_1.4.6.

OPSWAT Unit 515 researchers discovered CVE-2026-15315, an authentication bypass in the Tapo C200's local HTTPS management interface on port 443, where an alternative verification path accepts a replayed device-generated value, letting unauthenticated network-adjacent attackers establish admin sessions. CVE-2026-15316 causes a denial-of-service crash in the camera's HTTPS service via oversized encrypted Wi-Fi credential data during onboarding. TP-Link confirmed both issues after the April 16, 2026 report and released firmware V5_1.4.6 on August 18, 2026. OPSWAT says additional potentially critical findings remain under coordinated disclosure.
