Hackers Exploit Critical Cisco Secure Email Gateway Vulnerability in the Wild to Run Malicious Code

Cisco warns attackers actively exploit zero-day CVE-2026-76461 in Secure Email Gateway, gaining unauthenticated root command execution via crafted emails.

Cisco PSIRT confirmed active in-the-wild exploitation of CVE-2026-76461 throughout September 2026, a zero-day in Secure Email Gateway AsyncOS that lets remote, unauthenticated attackers execute arbitrary commands with root privileges by sending maliciously crafted emails containing injected SQL statements. Physical appliances, virtual deployments, and Cisco Secure Email Cloud instances were affected; Cisco deployed server-side remediations for cloud tenants but on-premises admins must patch themselves. Fixes ship in AsyncOS 16.5.0-780 plus branches 16.0.4-3021 and 15.5.5-0141, and no workarounds exist.

A rant about phishing: It's not the user's fault (and not DNS either)

Opinion piece argues multi-domain login redirects make legitimate flows indistinguishable from phishing, urging organizations to standardize on one recognizable root domain.

The author shows a real-world login flow that chains through numerous third-party domains (identity providers, cloud auth endpoints, OAuth APIs, 2FA pages), none on the company's own domain, so credentials and 2FA prompts are trivially impersonable. The piece argues URLs are inherently confusing because the security-relevant second-level domain sits mid-string, and that users trained to ignore URLs cannot distinguish legitimate pages from scams. It proposes RFC 2119-style requirements: single recognizable root domain, internal services on its subdomains, emailed or SMS links on that domain, and local redirects instead of third-party hosted pages.

Stealth rootkit targeting F5 BIG-IP could expose enterprise identity gateways

Sophos analyzed a stealth Linux rootkit that hides a web shell in memory on compromised F5 BIG-IP APM identity gateways, evading file-based detection.

Sophos analyzed a second-stage Linux rootkit implant found in compromised F5 BIG-IP APM environments running Apache and PHP, linked to exploitation of CVE-2025-53521, an unauthenticated RCE. The implant hooks Apache's PHP-loading process and serves modified in-memory versions of three legitimate webtop PHP files (apm_css.php3, full_wt.php3, webtop_popup_css.php3), leaving on-disk files untouched so hashes and integrity checks pass. It also establishes access via an authenticated local UNIX socket that can provide an interactive /bin/bash session. Experts warn compromised APM appliances, which handle federated SSO and terminate TLS at enterprise perimeters, could enable SSO token theft and lateral movement to trusted downstream applications.
