Building a risk-based vulnerability management program that scales

Asimily CEO Shankar Somasundaram outlines a risk-based vulnerability management approach using inventory, attack paths, KEV and EPSS data.

In a Help Net Security video, Asimily CEO Shankar Somasundaram argues patching everything is infeasible as AI-driven attacks inflate vulnerability counts, with one customer finding a thousand unknowns for each known one. He recommends building a full inventory of devices, applications, and data flows, mapping attack paths for reachability, and prioritizing with KEV, EPSS, and business impact. Mitigations include patching, virtual patching via NACs and firewalls, segmentation, and configuration snapshots to detect drift.

AI's Vulnerability Surge May Be More Manageable Than First Feared

New research argues the coming surge of vulnerabilities will be manageable for enterprise security teams that adopt the right triage and prioritization strategies.

A Dark Reading write-up of new research suggests the anticipated explosion in vulnerability volume may be less overwhelming than feared. The analysis indicates enterprise security teams can cope if they apply appropriate strategies for handling vulnerability influx. The piece is framed as guidance rather than a disclosure of specific flaws or incidents.

ENISA: Frontier AI Is Changing the Speed of Cyberattacks. Europe Needs to Catch Up

ENISA warns frontier AI compresses attack lifecycles to minutes, with exploits possible within 15 minutes of disclosure and median 72-minute breach-to-exfiltration times.

ENISA's July 2026 paper 'ENISA's view on Cybersecurity in the Frontier AI Era' argues AI-assisted attackers may weaponize vulnerabilities within 15 minutes of disclosure and achieve initial-access-to-data-exfiltration in a median 72 minutes, creating a 'negative time-to-exploit' problem. The report cites one organisation whose CVE volume rose from roughly 80 in Q1 2025 to almost 500 in Q1 2026, then about 500 reports per day when frontier-AI tools were used. ENISA recommends machine-speed defence under 'Cybersecurity as Code', EPSS and VEX-based prioritisation, AI-assisted incident response with human oversight, and an assume-breached architecture.

Frontier AI: Vulnerability Management's Systemic Revolution

Opinion: frontier AI like Anthropic's Mythos finds and exploits vulnerabilities at machine speed, forcing vulnerability and patch management programs to overhaul prioritization.

The author argues frontier AI models, exemplified by Anthropic's Mythos, can discover zero-days and chain exploits fast enough to overwhelm traditional vulnerability management. The piece recommends moving beyond CVSS, EPSS and KEV toward exposure management (CTEM) and automated, ring-based patch deployment. It also flags hard trade-offs between patching velocity and uptime requirements that organizations must resolve proactively.

CISA Adds Two Known Exploited Vulnerabilities to Catalog

CISA added actively exploited PaperCut NG/MF flaws CVE-2026-81578 and CVE-2026-82078 to the KEV catalog, mandating federal patching.

CISA added two vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog based on evidence of active exploitation: CVE-2026-81578 (PaperCut NG/MF missing authentication for critical function) and CVE-2026-82078 (PaperCut NG/MF unsafe reflection). Under Binding Operational Directive 26-04, Federal Civilian Executive Branch agencies are required to prioritize and apply these updates. Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Software TLS 1.3 Denial of Service Vulnerability

A TLS 1.3 buffer management flaw in Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense lets remote attackers crash the LINA process and reload devices.

A vulnerability in the TLS 1.3 implementation of Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense (FTD) software allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a denial of service via crafted TLS 1.3 packets sent to a TLS 1.3-enabled listening socket. Improper buffer management causes the LINA process to crash, forcing a device reload that can occur before or after connection authentication. Cisco has released software updates to address the flaw.

VEX-Bench: Benchmarking LLM Agents for Assessing Exploitability of Software Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

Introduces VEX-Bench, 75 expert-labeled real-world cases testing whether LLM agents can assess supply chain vulnerability exploitability; frontier models reach about 80% F1.

VEX-Bench is the first benchmark evaluating LLM agents on assessing whether upstream dependency vulnerabilities are exploitable in downstream projects, with 75 real-world expert-labeled cases across Python, Java, and Go mined from GitHub. Nine models across three agent harnesses were evaluated; GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus 4.6 reach approximately 80% F1 on binary vulnerability-status classification, but only GPT-5.5 surpasses 70% macro-F1 on fine-grained justification classification. The gap highlights the difficulty of moving beyond binary exploitability calls to explaining exploitability reasons, unlike prior benchmarks targeting zero-day settings.

Patch Tuesday to Pentest Wednesday: How an Equipment Rental Company Is Turning Continuous Testing Into Continuous Exposure Management

An equipment rental company uses Horizon3 NodeZero for continuous exposure management, surfacing an SSH key exposure in eight hours versus annual pentesting.

The company moved from periodic penetration testing to continuous exposure management using the NodeZero Proactive Security Platform, feeding telemetry into a Splunk-based CTEM pipeline via Horizon3 APIs. NodeZero exposed SSH RSA key pairs from a PHP web server change about eight hours after introduction and found more findings in 12 hours than a third-party engagement found in roughly 30 days. An Active Directory password audit of 15,000 passwords found about 300 identical or similar compromised passwords, driving a banned-password list, 12-character minimums, service desk changes, and self-service reset rollout; users with similar passwords later dropped from 880 to 209. NodeZero also validated a suspected Cisco vulnerability as exploitable.

A Deep Dive Into Attempted Exploitation of CVE-2023

Mirai-like botnet scans exploit TP-Link EOL router flaw CVE-2023-33538 after CISA KEV addition, though observed exploit code is flawed.

Unit 42 observed large-scale automated scans attempting to exploit CVE-2023-33538 in end-of-life TP-Link TL-WR940N, TL-WR740N and TL-WR841N routers after CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog in June 2025. HTTP GET requests inject commands via the ssid1 parameter at the /userRpm/WlanNetworkRpm endpoint to download and execute an arm7 ELF binary, a Mirai variant related to the Condi IoT botnet. Firmware emulation and reverse engineering showed the observed exploits are flawed and would fail, but the underlying vulnerability is real and successful exploitation requires authentication to the router's web interface. GeoServer Zero-Day Targeted in Active Exploitation Attempts, Can Lead to RCE

A CVSS 9.8 SQL injection zero-day in GeoServer's PostGIS datastore enables RCE and drew active exploitation; fixes shipped in versions 3.0.1, 2.28.5, 2.27.6.

Propagation Model for SSC attacks: Why SBOM (tools) don't tell the whole truth

Study shows open-source SBOM tools only cover structural exposure and vulnerability presence, missing code reachability and taint-path analysis stages.

An arXiv paper proposes a four-stage propagation model for software supply chain attack effects and empirically evaluates four open-source SBOM tools against it using three projects and the Log4j vulnerability as the test case. Current SBOM tools systematically support only Stage 1 (structural exposure) and Stage 2 (vulnerability class presence), while Stage 3 (code reachability) and Stage 4 (taint path analysis) require capabilities absent from the SBOM ecosystem. The authors argue propagation-centred SSC security research is needed to prevent cyber risk from evolving into systemic risk.
