τ^τ-Bench: An Environment for End-To-End, Realistic Agent Construction

New τ^τ-bench tasks coding agents with building deployable customer-service agents; best config, Claude Opus 5, passes only 23.9% of simulations.

Researchers introduce τ^τ-bench, an end-to-end benchmark where a developer agent must build a complete customer-service agent from real business records, a client with requirements, a production API, an inherited codebase, and cost/model limits, then is scored by deploying it against held-out simulated users. Across 53 tasks in four domains, the strongest configuration, Claude Opus 5 under Claude Code, passes just 23.9% of evaluation simulations versus an 82.2% expert-authored reference ceiling. Failure modes mirror those of human developers: shallow queries instead of deep record comprehension, almost no client communication, and shipping the first architecture that runs rather than experimenting.

Attackers impersonate popular AI brands to spread malware

Sophos documented 38 MDR cases where attackers impersonated AI brands like Claude and Perplexity to deliver infostealers and backdoors.

Sophos X-Ops analyzed 12 months of MDR cases and confirmed 38 incidents involving AI. Software impersonation accounted for 30 cases, with Claude impersonated in 26; fake installers used an 'InstallFix' technique delivering mshta commands, in-memory payloads, and process hollowing. Malicious browser extensions posing as AI assistants, including a fake Perplexity extension with 10,000 installs, acted as infostealers. In one case, attackers used a Claude coding agent to develop a Rust remote access trojan communicating over Slack after an SQL injection compromise.

Researchers Use Claude to Port Pre-Auth RCE Exploit From One PLC Model to Another

Forescout used Anthropic's Claude to port a working pre-auth RCE exploit for CVE-2021-31886 between WAGO PLCs, executing ARM shellcode on live hardware.

Forescout Vedere Labs used Claude interactively to port an RCE exploit for CVE-2021-31886, a CVSS 9.8 stack buffer overflow in the Nucleus FTP server's USER command, from a WAGO 750-852 to a WAGO 750-831 PLC, running attacker-supplied ARM shellcode. The final RCE stage cost $535.74 in API usage over 8 hours 32 minutes, and a follow-up attempt to build a C2 implant permanently bricked the device. CERT@VDE lists many Nucleus V1-based WAGO models as vulnerable with no updates available; Siemens plans no Nucleus NET remediation. The work follows a joint NSA/CISA/FBI/DOE/EPA advisory warning of AI-generated exploitation scripts targeting internet-exposed Siemens S7 PLCs.

Malicious MCP Servers Can Split Instructions to Make AI Coding Agents Exfiltrate Secrets

ASSET Research Group's GhostSplice technique splits malicious instructions across MCP channels, tricking AI coding agents into exfiltrating SSH keys, source code, and secrets.

ASSET Research Group disclosed GhostSplice, a prompt-injection technique in which a malicious Model Context Protocol (MCP) server splits an exfiltration instruction across a tool description and a tool result so no single fragment appears harmful. In the reference implementation, a benign-looking integrity_checker tool with fields alpha through delta is later paired with a project-scan result mapping those fields to .ssh/id_rsa, proprietary source, customers.csv, and .env. Tests across eleven API-tested models showed average compliance rising from 42% to 82% when instructions were split in two, with GPT-4o, Gemini 2.0 Flash, and Llama 3.3 70B going from 0% to 100%. The findings come from controlled lab tests, not a reported real-world intrusion, and no CVE identifiers had been assigned as of August 10, 2026.

I'm going back to coding by hand

A developer abandoned six months of Claude-assisted work on a popular app, resuming hand coding after losing track of what AI-generated changes did.

In a Hacker News post, a developer of an app with a solid user base describes abandoning a six-month Claude-assisted rewrite because they no longer understood what the AI-generated code changed or broke. The author notes their workplace already writes code exclusively with LLMs and says returning to hand coding restored understanding and motivation. The post advises others feeling detached from their craft to stop using AI coding assistants for a few days.

$536 and 8 Hours: AI Learns to Attack a Different PLC

Forescout used Claude to port a WAGO PLC exploit for $536 in 8 hours, and an AI-generated payload later permanently bricked the test device.

Forescout researchers used Claude Code with Ghidra, terminal access, and physical hardware to port CVE-2021-31886, a pre-authentication buffer overflow in the Nucleus FTP server, from a WAGO 750-852 PLC to the WAGO 750-831 without source code or debugger access. The final RCE development stage cost $535.74 in API fees over an 8-hour, 32-minute session (2.6k input and 1.3M output tokens) and required heavy researcher guidance. Claude produced working ICMP and UDP beacon exploits in 12 minutes after identifying that normal FTP command completion was overwriting its shellcode, fixed by omitting the CRLF terminator. A follow-up session extending the payloads toward a C2 implant wrote to flash-mapped memory and permanently bricked the PLC, underscoring the risks of autonomous agents operating against physical infrastructure.

Meta is paying to peek at how you use their latest AI model

Meta offers roughly 95% discounts on Muse Spark token pricing for customers who share prompts and outputs to train future models.

Meta's contributor pricing tier for its Muse Spark agentic coding model cuts input token costs from $1.25 to $0.10 per million and output tokens from $4.25 to $0.20 per million in exchange for access to user prompts and outputs. The move reflects labs' difficulty obtaining training data for agentic workflows, following Meta's paused employee computer-usage tracking initiative. Analysts note the incentive could push enterprises to clarify which data is shareable, and it fits broader price competition against Anthropic's Fable and Mythos models and OpenAI's July price cuts.

Claude is no longer available for minors

Anthropic restricts Claude consumer accounts to users 18 and over, using detection signals and third-party Yoti verification to confirm age when minor activity is suspected.

Anthropic's support documentation states the Claude consumer product is available only to users over 18, and accounts flagged by minor-activity detection systems must verify age before continuing. Verification is handled by third-party provider Yoti through ID documents, selfies, or other accepted methods; Anthropic receives only a pass/fail result and never sees or stores the ID or images. Flagged accounts remain disabled until verification is passed, at which point they are reinstated.

US Agencies Warn Chinese AI Firms Are Extracting Advanced AI Models

NSA, CISA, and FBI accuse six Chinese AI firms including DeepSeek and Alibaba of industrial-scale distillation of US frontier models.

A joint NSA, CISA, and FBI advisory alleges DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z.AI extracted billions of tokens across millions of requests from US frontier models including Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok since at least late 2024. DeepSeek reportedly ran an organized campaign against Claude, GPT, and Gemini between late 2024 and mid-2025 that aided R1 and V3 development, including chain-of-thought reasoning extraction. Reported techniques included shared premium accounts, gray-market proxy 'transfer stations,' automated failover, and prompt injection that made Claude Code believe it was a MiniMax product. The advisory recommends detection signals such as 24/7 multi-IP account usage and covertly serving degraded responses to suspected distillers.
