Cisco Warns of Ongoing Exploitation of Critical Email Gateway Zero-Day

Cisco disclosed critical zero-day CVE-2026-76461 (CVSS 9.8) in Secure Email Gateway, remotely exploitable without authentication via crafted emails containing malicious SQL statements, leading to arbitrary command execution with root privileges. The flaw affects physical and virtual appliances regardless of configuration and has no workarounds. Cisco PSIRT confirmed active exploitation, and CISA added the CVE to its KEV catalog on September 14 with a federal remediation deadline of September 17. Shared Hosting at Risk: LiteSpeed Enterprise Bug Can Grant Root from a Single Tenant

Critical LiteSpeed Web Server Enterprise flaw (pre-6.3.7) lets a low-privilege shared-hosting tenant escape CageFS isolation and gain root; forced update urged.

cPanel warned that a critical privilege-escalation vulnerability in LiteSpeed Web Server Enterprise (fixed in 6.3.7) lets a malicious low-privilege website user bypass account isolation controls including CloudLinux CageFS and gain root on shared-hosting servers, enabling cross-tenant compromise. No CVE, severity rating, or technical details have been published, and it is unclear whether the flaw is being exploited. This is the third root-level LiteSpeed escape on cPanel servers since May, following CVE-2026-48172 and CVE-2026-54420, which were actively exploited and added to CISA's KEV catalog.

One Exploit Chain, Two Espionage Campaigns: Chrome and Windows Under Fire

Two China-linked APT groups reused identical Chrome/Windows zero-day chain against NGOs, deploying GRIMWIDGE backdoor and LONGTALE credential-stealing extension.

Volexity reports that China-linked actors UTA0560 and JungleBamboo (APT31/TA412) ran byte-identical Chrome/Windows exploit chains against NGOs starting September 1, 2026, combining Chrome type confusion CVE-2026-85046, WebAssembly sandbox escape CVE-2026-87491, and Windows kernel flaw CVE-2026-85880. The Chrome bug was fixed in Chromium source but not yet shipped to Chrome users, making it an effective zero-day with an unusual patch gap. UTA0560 delivered the in-memory GRIMWEDGE JScript backdoor, while JungleBamboo deployed the SUPERSTOMP loader installing LONGTALE, a malicious Chrome extension disguised as Google Gemini that steals cookies, session tokens, and keystrokes. Volexity assesses with low confidence the exploit chain was sold or shared among different Chinese end-users.

Telegram Desktop Flaw Could Turn Old Chat Exports Into Data Theft Traps

ExPatch researchers Denis and Aleksander Rostilov found a stored XSS flaw (CVSS 8.2) where bot inline keyboard button text was written unescaped into HTML chat exports, executing attacker JavaScript in browsers. The payload can persist in chat history for months, exfiltrate messages, metadata, and local file paths, and rewrite the page, spreading via forwarded messages without bot membership. Telegram fixed it by applying SerializeString(), first stable fixed release 7.0.1 shipped July 14, 2026, but HTML exports created with vulnerable versions remain dangerous.

Japan's Digital Agency disclosed that attackers exploited a medium-severity, already-patchable vulnerability in a VPN device to access the Government Solution Service (GSS), potentially leaking personal data of roughly 246,000 government employees, officials, and contractors across 23 ministries. The intrusion was detected on June 25 and confirmed as VPN exploitation on July 9, with public disclosure 78 days after detection. Exposed data includes about 236,000 names, 231,000 email addresses, 94,000 phone numbers, and 1,000 physical addresses; no My Number, bank account, or pension numbers were included. The compromised maintenance staff account was suspended and the compromised hardware isolated, but the VPN product and flaw were not disclosed.

GitLab CVE-2026-85706: One HTTP Request, No Authentication, Full File Read – Exploited Within 24 Hours

CVE-2026-85706 is a CVSS 10.0 path traversal in GitLab's repository commits API allowing unauthenticated arbitrary file read via a single crafted HTTP request, exposing SSH keys, database credentials, deploy tokens, and CI/CD variables. watchTowr observed in-the-wild probes by September 11, one day after the September 10 disclosure, and CISA added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Affected versions include CE and EE 18.7 before 19.1.8, 19.2 before 19.2.6, and 19.3 before 19.3.2; the same update also patches insecure deserialization flaw CVE-2026-87719. Defenders should patch or remove public access, hunt logs for POSTs to /api/v4/projects/{id}/repository/commits/ with file.path parameters, and rotate exposed credentials.

Artifactory flaws are being chained with CVE-2026-82329 in attacks observed August 15 to September 8, taking over self-hosted servers, creating persistent administrator accounts, and installing backdoors. ScreenConnect CVE-2026-84869 allows unauthorized file transfer and execution during remote sessions, linked by Huntress to malicious VBScript deliveries, and is fixed in version 26.6.5. GitLab's repository commits API path traversal exposes SSH keys, database credentials, deploy tokens, and CI/CD variables, with watchTowr already observing in-the-wild probes. Federal agencies must patch GitLab and ScreenConnect flaws by September 14, 2026, and Artifactory flaws by September 25, 2026.

Dutch NCSC Warns: Critical Check Point VPN Flaws Put Networks at Risk

Conti Hacker Who Built Malware and Attacked Victims Gets Four-Year Sentence

Ukrainian lawyer and Conti malware developer Oleksii Lytvynenko was sentenced to four years in U.S. prison for wire fraud conspiracy tied to Conti ransomware.

Lytvynenko, 44, admitted coding a loader for Conti and holding stolen data from eight U.S. and four overseas victims; prosecutors linked his actions to attacks on at least 12 companies. Conti infected more than 1,000 organizations across 47 U.S. states and 31 countries between 2020 and 2022, with victim payouts exceeding $150 million. Arrested in County Cork in July 2023 with Cobalt Strike running and an active Rocket.Chat session over Tor, forensic evidence showed his ransomware activity continued after Conti's 2022 collapse.
