LinkedIn adds vouching, employer controls, and workplace verification to fight fake profiles

LinkedIn is letting verified colleagues vouch for work histories, letting company Page admins remove false employment claims, and testing mandatory workplace verification such as a work email.

LinkedIn announced new tools to counter fake profiles and invented work histories. Verified members who have been connected for at least a year and use two-factor authentication can vouch that a colleague actually held a claimed role, confirming shared work or study periods. Page admins at verified companies can remove false employment associations from their company page and related search results without altering the member's own profile. LinkedIn is also testing a requirement that new company associations complete workplace verification, for example via a work email. The company says existing tools have already verified 115 million members and more than 700,000 companies, and Truecaller and PeerSpot are joining Adobe and UserTesting as partners that can display LinkedIn-verified identity. Analysts note the features raise the cost of AI-generated fake profiles but offer weaker protection when the supposed employer itself is fraudulent.
