Microsoft sets Windows support deadlines and 2027 certificate cutoff
Microsoft warned Windows Update certificates expire in 2027, while Windows 11 23H2 and Server 2022 hit 2026 support milestones.
Microsoft warned that certificates used to verify Windows Update servers expire on May 17 or June 19, 2027, depending on the Windows version, and devices that miss replacement certificates will lose Windows Update, including security fixes. Windows 11 version 25H2 and later need no action, version 24H2 needs the September 2025 security update or later, and several other supported versions need the July 2026 update or later; WSUS-updated devices are excluded, and systems that miss the deadline can still install the required update from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Separately, Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions get a final security update in November 2026 and should move to Windows 11 26H2, generally available since September 2026 as an enablement package, after Home and Pro reached end of support in November 2025. Windows Server 2022 left mainstream support on October 13, 2026, and moved to extended support with monthly security updates through October 14, 2031; Datacenter: Azure Edition hotpatching continues until October 2027. Microsoft recommends Windows Server 2025, whose mainstream support ends in November 2029 and extended support ends November 14, 2034, and also said Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro no longer receive preview updates. One report said unsupported versions lose updates after the certificate rotation, while the certificate notice applies to devices missing replacement certificates rather than only to unsupported releases.
