PEEP Turns Chrome and Edge Into Post-Compromise Backdoors for Host Command Execution

SOCRadar disclosed PEEP, a post-exploitation Chromium extension toolkit that turns Chrome and Edge into host-level backdoors via native messaging and C2 polling.

SOCRadar researchers detailed PEEP, a Chromium-based post-exploitation toolkit masquerading as a 'Smart Bookmarks' extension injected directly into Chrome and Edge profiles by forging Secure Preferences integrity values, bypassing Web Store checks. A native-messaging host binary (nm_host.exe) extends the browser agent to host-level command execution, file management, credential theft, and session hijacking, while the extension polls C2 endpoints at 206.237.30.232 or xfjcc.fun every 30 seconds over plaintext HTTP and exfiltrates browsing history, cookies, and tab metadata. PEEP is derived from the open-source RedExt red teaming framework, adds PowerShell persistence scripts, and includes a Linux-targeting Python script, suggesting cross-platform intent. The activity is unattributed but contains Chinese-language artifacts; a C2 /health endpoint showed 34 agent entries and 10 active sessions.

  • Heap-Based Buffer Overflow in Fortinet FortiOS, FortiSwitchManager, and FortiSASE
CVE-2025-25249 is a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122/CWE-787) in Fortinet FortiOS, FortiSwitchManager, and FortiSASE that allows an attacker to execute unauthorized code or commands. It is triggered by sending specially crafted packets to an affected device, causing an out-of-bounds write in heap memory that can be leveraged for code execution. Successful exploitation gives attackers command execution on the appliance; in observed intrusions against FortiGate firewalls, attackers have deployed custom Node.js malware and a post-exploitation RAT dubbed PivotC2. Any organization running the affected Fortinet products is at risk, with internet-facing FortiGate firewalls the primary concern. The flaw was added to CISA's KEV on 2026-09-09, confirming active exploitation in the wild (ransomware use unknown); no public PoC is known.

  • Local Elevation of Privilege in Microsoft Defender Malware Protection Engine
CVE-2026-69414, publicly dubbed 'ShieldBreak', is a high-severity (CVSS 3.1: 7.8) elevation-of-privilege flaw in the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine (MMPE) that powers Microsoft Defender, rooted in improper access control and improper privilege management (CWE-284/CWE-269). It is triggered locally: an attacker who already holds low privileges on the machine needs no user interaction (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N) to trip the engine's flawed access checks, and successful exploitation yields high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability. News coverage reports public PoCs released under the 'ShieldBreak'/'ShieldCrash' names demonstrating SYSTEM-level access on Defender-protected Windows systems, including claims that the shipped patch can be bypassed and arbitrary files read as SYSTEM. Because MMPE ships as the scan engine inside Microsoft Defender, effectively every Defender-protected Windows 10/11 endpoint and server is potentially affected, though the source data specifies no affected engine version ranges. There is no confirmed in-the-wild exploitation (EPSS 0.6%, absent from CISA KEV), but given the public PoC claims, defenders should assume working exploit code exists.

  • Unauthenticated Remote Code Execution in HPE ArubaOS-CX
HPE has disclosed multiple flaws in a daemon of ArubaOS-CX, the operating system running on Aruba's CX enterprise switches, where the service improperly processes malformed input (CWE-284, improper access control). An unauthenticated remote attacker can trigger the issue by sending specially crafted packets to the affected service, and successful exploitation yields remote code execution with elevated privileges on the switch. The 9.8 CVSS score reflects network-based attack vectors requiring no authentication, privileges, or user interaction, with high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Organizations running ArubaOS-CX switches are affected; the specific vulnerable and fixed firmware versions are not stated in the available data and must be taken from HPE's advisory. There is no known public proof-of-concept, the flaw is not in CISA's KEV, and EPSS estimates only a 0.5% chance of exploitation in the next 30 days, indicating no known exploitation at this time.
