Ukrainian national Oleksii Lytvynenko, 44, was sentenced to four years in a US prison for his role in the Conti ransomware operation, having pleaded guilty in June. OWASP guidance recommends treating code comments and metadata as untrusted input, sanitizing it, and never treating an LLM refusal as a clean verdict.

Hackers Abuse Google CAPTCHA, WebDAV and BNB Smart Chain to Deploy Credential-Stealing Malware

Cisco Talos identified a multi-stage campaign, first observed in April 2026 when a Ukrainian government organization executed a disguised DLL named verification.google from a WebDAV path. The chain combines ClearFake JavaScript injected via malicious Cloudflare Workers, EtherHiding payloads stored in BNB Smart Chain contracts, ClickFix social engineering, and WebDAV-hosted DLL loaders to deliver the Amatera (ACR Stealer) infostealer. The Amatera configuration contained over 400 collection entries targeting browsers, messengers, crypto wallets, password managers, FTP and VPN tools, hunting for .kdbx, .p12, .pfx and .pem files. The pf.ch branch deploys ZigCryptoStealer, an EDR-terminating vulnerable driver and Go-based reverse TCP proxies, while the verification.google branch installs NetSupport Manager, supporting moderate-confidence attribution of the UAT-10820 activity to a Russian actor.

The infection chain uses ClearFake JavaScript injected via a Cloudflare Worker, EtherHiding storage on BNB Smart Chain contracts, and a ClickFix fake Google CAPTCHA prompt to deliver Amatera stealer. Secondary payloads differ by C2: one loader deploys ZigCryptoStealer with a Go reverse TCP proxy and a vulnerable driver that kills EDR, while the other installs an unauthorized NetSupport Manager with a Russia-based C2. Similar Amatera chains were separately documented by Malwarebytes and Blackpoint Cyber, but with no shared infrastructure.

Elastic Security Labs identified four previously unreported executables tied to REVSTEALER, a commercial Windows infostealer sold since at least February 2026: ProManager, WinUpdate, SoftManager, and LockAppHost. LockAppHost abuses CMSTP for elevation, adds Microsoft Defender exclusions, disables five Windows Update services and 13 scheduled tasks, then hides a miner in legitimate Windows processes; other modules steal wallets, clipboard-swap crypto addresses, and turn victims into reverse proxies. The components share REVSTEALER tradecraft including packer, runtime function resolution, and Polygon smart-contract backup configuration (EtherHiding). Elastic's detection rule matched about 4,700 VirusTotal samples over the past year; distribution uses hijacked YouTube channels promoting game cheats and a fake 'Claude Opus 5 Free Desktop' app.

Scans of 153 million driver's licenses, traced to IDscan.net and including Pete Hegseth and Brian Krebs, were offered for sale on the dark web.

Digital scans of 153 million driver's licenses appeared for sale by a user on the Russian cybercrime forum Exploit, alongside over 10 million ID cards, 3 million travel documents, and 579,000 medical cards sold through a site called Nexus. KrebsOnSecurity traced the leak to identity verification provider IDscan.net, whose customers include car rental company Hertz, and victims reportedly include US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The FBI has opened an official inquiry into the source of the images, and IDscan.net has not issued an official statement.

A new Russian decree tightens critical-infrastructure security requirements, forcing data center operators to boost physical and digital defenses amid Ukrainian drone attacks.

A decree signed by President Putin in late August lets the Russian government temporarily take control of critical infrastructure, including data centers, if operators fail to protect facilities from drone attacks. Russia hosts 181 data centers, many concentrated around Moscow and St. Petersburg, areas increasingly exposed to Ukrainian long-range drone operations. Operators report higher capital expenditures for physical defenses and cybersecurity, costs likely passed to customers. Ukraine has also struck data centers in Kyiv, and Russia has expanded anti-drone measures such as netting and metal barriers.

Kaspersky tracks ransomware group Toy Ghouls deploying new custom backdoors, mqtt-bird-agent and matrix-bird-agent, using HiveMQ MQTT and Element as C2 channels.

Kaspersky reports that Toy Ghouls (also known as Bearlyfy, Laboo.boo and Feral Wolf), a financially motivated group targeting Russian organizations since 2025, shifted from leaked Babuk and LockBit builders and public GitHub tools to its custom GenieLocker ransomware. In early July 2026 the group deployed two custom backdoors: mqtt-bird-agent 0.1.0 using the public HiveMQ MQTT broker as C2, and matrix-bird-agent 0.1.0 using the Element messenger. The backdoors are delivered via WinRM using Evil-WinRM and WinRM-fs, persist as Windows services, and encrypt their configuration with ChaCha20-Poly1305 keyed to the machine's MachineGuid registry value.

Russia ordered data center operators to deploy drone strike defenses under a Putin decree allowing temporary state takeover of unprotected critical infrastructure.

The Russian government instructed data center operators to deploy protections against drone strikes under a presidential decree signed by Putin that allows temporary state administration of critical infrastructure operators failing to defend against Ukrainian hacks and drone strikes. Although data centers are not formally critical infrastructure in Russia, the decree applies to them because other sectors depend heavily on cloud services; Russia has more than 180 data centers, over 80% in the European region within range of Ukrainian strikes. The digest also reports a Dropbox breach affecting nearly 5,000 accounts via the Lenovo ID integration, spyware attacks on at least 14 Serbians using NoviSpy or Pegasus, and a password recovery attack targeting hundreds of thousands of X accounts tied to the new X Money service. Other items include a 14-hour compromise of Coder's Cloudflare infrastructure delivering malicious Terraform modules, donor data breaches at Davayte and You Are Not Alone via the Stripe/WooCommerce integration, a $2.5M Aquifer crypto heist, and a TVING breach exposing data of almost 40 million accounts.

More than 2,000 leaked Bauman Moscow State Technical University documents show that Department No. 4, a hidden program inside the Military Training Center, trained roughly 250 career and reserve students for GRU cyber and intelligence roles across six academic years. Graduates were linked to Military Unit 26165 (APT28), Unit 74455 (Sandworm/APT44) and Unit 29155, and former Unit 26165 commander Viktor Netyksho was involved in department oversight. Reporting by The Insider, The Guardian, Le Monde, Der Spiegel and other outlets, with independent analysis by DomainTools, estimates 10-15 students annually were selected for GRU-related assignments before graduating.

US prosecutors indicted a Russian national for infecting roughly 80,000 freelancers with TVRAT and DarkVNC malware via fake freelance-platform accounts.

Searzhudin Tamirlanovich Aktulaev, 40, was indicted in California for conspiracy, transmission of malicious code, and aggravated identity theft; he was arrested in Cyprus in May 2025 and extradited in August 2026. From June 2016 to November 2017, about 255 fake accounts on a Northern California freelance platform messaged roughly 80,000 users with malicious Excel attachments that ran macros to download malware. The campaign deployed TVRAT (also known as TeamSpy), which exploited a TeamViewer flaw, and DarkVNC via VNC Viewer, exfiltrating stolen data to US-hosted command-and-control servers. About half the victims were in the US, and stolen credentials were used for fraud.

Russian national facing 20 years for malware campaign that infected 80,000 freelancers

US prosecutors indicted Russian national Searzhudin Aktulaev for a 2016 TVRAT malware campaign that infected 80,000 freelance platform users, carrying up to 20 years.

Searzhudin Tamirlanovich Aktulaev was arrested in Cyprus in May 2025, extradited to the US, and appeared in a San Francisco federal court on charges including conspiracy, aggravated identity theft, and damaging protected computers. Between June 2016 and November 2017 he spread a TVRAT (TVSPY/TeamSpy) variant via malicious Microsoft Excel attachments sent from 255 fake accounts on a freelance employment platform's messaging system, infecting about 80,000 users. TVRAT exploited a TeamViewer vulnerability and DarkVNC exploited a bug in VNC Viewer to take over devices; he used the access to steal data and commit fraud, maintained C2 domains, and stored stolen e-commerce credentials for hundreds of victims. About half the victims were in the US, mostly California; the charges carry a maximum 20-year sentence and his next hearing is October 5.

New pro-Ukraine hacker group targets Russian companies with custom ransomware

F6 links new pro-Ukraine ransomware group VantaCore, likely a Thor rebrand, to seven attacks on Russian firms using custom tooling and multimillion-dollar demands.

Russian cybersecurity firm F6 reports that VantaCore, a ransomware group believed to be a rebrand of pro-Ukrainian group Thor, has targeted at least seven Russian organizations with ransom demands reaching millions of dollars, operating as a ransomware-as-a-service operation with a Tor-based victim chat and a leak site. The group uses custom-built tooling including the VantaCore ransomware that encrypts servers and workstations, VantaCoreLoader for distribution, the VantaCoreRAT backdoor, and SnowKiller, which disables antivirus and security software. Initial access relies on poorly secured VPNs and remote-access tools, flaws in internet-facing applications, and credentials stolen from business partners. F6 notes pro-Ukrainian groups increasingly abandoned stock ransomware like LockBit 3 Black and Babuk in 2025-2026 in favor of custom malware.

Russian Man Extradited Over Malware Campaign Targeting Freelancers

A Russian national was extradited to the US for allegedly spreading TVRAT and DarkVNC malware to 80,000 freelance platform users via Excel attachments.

Prosecutors say he and co-conspirators used about 255 fake accounts on a freelance employment platform's messaging system to send macro-laden Excel attachments between June 2016 and November 2017, deploying TVRAT (TVSPY/TeamSpy) and DarkVNC remote access trojans. Thousands of victims were identified on a US-hosted C2 domain, with roughly half of the 80,000 affected users in the US; C2 infrastructure was paid for with virtual currency. If convicted he faces up to 20 years for wire fraud conspiracy plus additional terms and fines.

    CVE-2026-33017 is an unauthenticated remote code execution flaw in Langflow, an open-source tool for building and deploying AI-powered agents and workflows. The POST /api/v1/build_public_tmp/{flow_id}/flow endpoint, which by design requires no authentication for building public flows, accepts an optional data parameter; when present, attacker-controlled flow data — including arbitrary Python code embedded in node definitions — is used instead of the flow stored in the database and passed to exec() with no sandboxing. An attacker who can reach this endpoint on an affected instance can therefore execute arbitrary Python code without any credentials, typically yielding full compromise of the underlying server. All Langflow versions prior to 1.9.0 are affected; the issue was fixed in 1.9.0 and is distinct from CVE-2025-3248, which only added authentication to the /api/v1/validate/code endpoint.   • Stored Cross-Site Scripting in Synacor Zimbra Collaboration Suite Classic UI
    Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) 10 before 10.0.18 and 10.1 before 10.1.13 is vulnerable to stored cross-site scripting through its Classic webmail interface. An attacker sends an HTML e-mail containing a Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) @import directive, and when a recipient opens that message in Classic UI, the injected content executes as script in the victim's browser session. Successful exploitation lets an attacker run arbitrary JavaScript in the Zimbra webmail context, potentially hijacking the session, reading mail, or acting as the user, consistent with the cross-scope impact reflected in the 6.1 CVSS score.   • Unauthenticated Arbitrary File Read in Ruby on Rails Active Storage
    CVE-2026-66066 is a flaw in Active Storage (part of Ruby on Rails' Action Pack) in which libvips operations that are marked unsafe for untrusted content are not disabled, so a crafted upload can invoke such an operation on the server. It is triggered when an unauthenticated attacker uploads a maliciously crafted image to a Rails application that is configured to use libvips and accepts image uploads from untrusted users. Successful exploitation lets the attacker read arbitrary files accessible to the Rails process, including environment variables and application secrets; leaked credentials such as secret_key_base or external-service tokens can be leveraged for remote code execution or lateral movement. Affected applications are those running Rails 7.2.x, 8.0.x or 8.1.x before the patched releases 7.2.3.2, 8.0.5.1 and 8.1.3.1, provided Active Storage with libvips is in use.
