Google privacy update can use opted-in Gmail and Photos data for ads
October 23–24 coverage restates the October 16 policy wording and existing opt-out controls, without a further Google change.
Google’s October 16 privacy wording lets opted-in Gmail, Drive, and Photos data shared with AI features personalize ads.
Google’s privacy policy, effective October 16, 2026, no longer flatly bars personalized ads based on Drive, Gmail, or Google Photos content. If a user opts in and makes that data available to other Google services that support ads—including Search, AI Mode, Gemini, or AI Overviews through Personal Intelligence—it can shape personalized results and sponsored content. Google says advertisers do not receive the raw files, names, or email addresses, ads are not based directly on an inbox or photo library, and sensitive categories such as race, sexual orientation, religion, and health are not used. The Gemini app currently shows no ads; AI search tools can show sponsored content. Users can disconnect apps or turn off personalized recommendations. Personal Intelligence is a beta for users 18 and older, excluding the EEA, Switzerland, the U.K., and Nigeria.
