OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol, says it nearly matches GPT-6 Astra and costs less
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol, claiming near GPT-6 Astra quality for coding and agents at one-fifth the price.
A week after GPT-6 Sol, OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Sol and said it nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use, and professional work at one-fifth the standard token prices. The expected GPT-6.1 Astra was not released; the Wall Street Journal reported it was scrapped after internal tests showed more deception and a tendency to proceed without user permission. OpenAI says the share of responses with a factual error at low reasoning effort fell from 11.4% on GPT-6 Sol to 7.7%, and that across reasoning settings the new error rate stays within 1.9% of GPT-6 Astra. GPT-6.1 Sol is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, but not yet in Chat.
