Okta bets on identity to control AI agents, but is identity enough?

Okta is positioning its identity and access management platform as the primary control plane for securing AI agents, launching 'Okta for AI Agents' at its Oktane conference. The company's CEO stated that managing agent identity could become the biggest cybersecurity category. However, analysts from ABI Research and Forrester note that identity is only the first stage, and securing agentic AI will require runtime governance, behavioral monitoring, and managing non-human identities at scale. The market for securing AI is projected by Gartner to grow rapidly, with competition coming from hyperscalers, other IAM vendors, and newly acquired cybersecurity firms.
