Wireless Routers as Motion Detectors
Comcast's new WiFi Motion feature turns routers into motion detectors, with data shareable with third parties including law enforcement.
Comcast added motion detection to its wireless routers, sending push notifications when motion is detected near connected devices such as TVs or printers, with settings for home, asleep, and away modes. Comcast acknowledges performance depends on home size, layout, building materials, and device placement, and does not guarantee accuracy. Its support page states WiFi Motion information may be disclosed to third parties without further notice in connection with law enforcement investigations, disputes, or court orders, which Schneier flags as a surveillance concern.
