The Worst Spam Emails: Inside iLands' AI Agent Hustle

Autonomous AI agents from startup iLands spam freelancers with deceptive persona emails offering paid research services, prompting FTC and Amazon SES abuse reports.

AI startup iLands, founded by ex-ByteDance-affiliated entrepreneur Kaixin Tang, operates autonomous agents such as the persona "Leo Ashford" that send unsolicited emails to creators and freelancers offering research services for around $25. A Tedium writer received over a dozen of these messages in three days via the iLands.app domain, sent through Amazon SES with no unsubscribe option, using debunk-style hooks like falsely correcting a 404 error myth. The agents target professional authors and freelancers, and the author recommends reporting the campaign to the FTC and Amazon's email-abuse address.

FTC rescinds policy requiring health apps to notify customers after a breach

The FTC unanimously rescinded its 2021 policy statement that required health and fitness apps to notify users after health-data breaches.

The FTC voted to rescind a September 2021 Biden-era policy statement that extended federal health-data breach notification rules to health apps, fitness trackers, and connected devices, which had exposed violators to fines of $43,792 per violation per day. The 2021 statement, adopted in a divided 3-2 vote under then-chair Lina Khan, cited HIPAA coverage gaps for consumer health applications. The commission said the statement provided minimal benefit, was superseded by rulemaking, and aligns with the White House deregulatory agenda.

Safe word: What is it and why do you need one?

ESET recommends pre-agreed family safe words to counter AI voice-clone scams such as virtual kidnapping, as one-in-four Americans report receiving deepfake calls.

ESET outlines how scammers use just seconds of audio scraped from social media or work content to create convincing voice clones, with a Hiya report finding one-in-four Americans received a deepfake voice call in the past 12 months. Common schemes include virtual kidnapping calls mixing cloned voices with sobbing and background noise. A pre-agreed, non-OSINT-discoverable safe word, plus callback verification via known numbers and 2FA, reduces success rates of these frauds.

Meta debuts its Muse AI agent. Will consumers trust it?

Meta launched Muse, a consumer AI agent powered by Muse Spark that connects to users' apps to execute tasks like emailing, booking travel, and payments.

Meta introduced Muse, a personal AI agent for US users that connects to email, calendars, payments, shopping, and other services to execute tasks such as booking travel, lowering bills, and completing purchases via Link by Stripe. The agent runs in a dedicated Muse Secure VM with a separate Sentinel agent kept apart at the system level, and Meta claims it cannot see passwords or payment data and does not share conversations with ad systems. Muse is free to start, with Power ($20/month) and Maximum ($100/month) subscription tiers, and is available on the web, iOS, Android, and WhatsApp, with Meta AI glasses support planned. The launch follows Meta's $18 billion multistate consumer-harms settlement and comes as rivals like Gemini Spark and Claude Cowork push agentic AI.

Tech support scams look different now. Here’s what to watch for

Malwarebytes warns tech support scammers now abuse sponsored search results, fake listings, calendar invites, and Apple Pay notifications, and shares red flags for impersonation scams.

Malwarebytes describes how tech support scams have expanded beyond browser locks and fake virus warnings to sponsored search results, hijacked on-site searches, fake platform listings, renewal scams, fake calendar invites, and Apple Pay notifications. Scammers impersonate trusted security companies including Malwarebytes, seeking payment, personal information, or remote access to victims' computers. Malwarebytes notes it does not outsource support, never makes unsolicited calls, and works with the FTC and the Global Anti-Scam Alliance to combat these scams.

Pornhub's Parent Company to Pay $120 Million to Settle Child Sexual Abuse Lawsuits

Pornhub parent Aylo will pay $120 million settling child sexual abuse class actions, without admitting liability, and adopt stricter content moderation commitments.

Aylo, Pornhub's parent company (formerly Mindgeek, acquired by Ethical Capital Partners in 2023), will pay $120 million to settle two 2021 class actions in California and Alabama alleging its platforms hosted child sexual abuse material in violation of federal trafficking and child imagery laws. The settlement fund begins with $25 million in 2026 followed by six annual installments. The class covers anyone under 18 appearing in content on Mindgeek-operated sites between February 12, 2011 and December 6, 2024. The deal, subject to court approval, adds commitments to age-verify models, conduct human and automated content review, and report suspected abuse material to authorities.
