LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
Gamers Nexus investigation finds LG smart TVs log audio, Wi-Fi scans, and viewing data even offline or in standby, feeding LG Ad Solutions.
Testing by Gamers Nexus, Level1Techs, and independent researchers on retail LG OLEDs showed the TVs scanning Wi-Fi networks, recording microphone audio in standby even when disconnected from the internet, and using Automatic Content Recognition to identify watched content. Data is sent to LG Ad Solutions. RTINGS notes ACR tracking is common across most smart TV manufacturers, and LG had a prior Gamers Nexus dispute over data-collecting pop-up ads on monitors.
