OpenAI will start watermarking ChatGPT’s text in the EU
OpenAI will invisibly watermark ChatGPT and Codex text in the EU to comply with the AI Act.
OpenAI will add an invisible watermark to ChatGPT and Codex text in the EU to meet EU AI Act transparency rules that took effect August 2. The textGrain method subtly shapes word choices so a keyed detector can identify generated text after copy-paste, without identifying the user, and OpenAI reported no meaningful quality drop. Tests found replacing 10% of words with synonyms cut detection from about 92% to 66%, and short passages, math, and translations are harder to detect. API users worldwide can enable it today, but it is off by default and not a global default; detector access is limited to approved researchers.
