BlueMoon Exploit Kit Chains Recent Chrome, Windows Zero-Days

Proofpoint reports multiple espionage groups rapidly adopting BlueMoon, a new exploit kit chaining Chrome and Windows zero-days.

Proofpoint identified a new exploit kit, BlueMoon, chaining two Chrome V8 zero-days (CVE-2026-85046, CVE-2026-87491) with a Windows ALPC privilege escalation zero-day (CVE-2026-85880), all patched between September 3 and September 2026 Patch Tuesday. China-linked Violet Typhoon (APT31) first used it on August 28 against US NGOs and mining/commodity trading firms; UNK_LateNight, UNK_DoubleCheck, and UNK_QuietRacket adopted it within days against targets in the US, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore. The kit exploits the V8 defects for sandbox escape, fingerprints the host, and injects a CreateProcess stub into the Chrome broker process to download and execute a payload via curl. Development artifacts suggest the kit's creators may have used AI to build it, potentially lowering the barrier to exploit development.

China-Linked Hackers Chain Chrome Zero-Day With Windows Kernel Flaw in Attacks

Volexity reports China-linked UTA0560 and JungleBamboo chained Chrome zero-day CVE-2026-85046 with kernel flaws to spy on NGOs.

Volexity documented campaigns detected on September 1, 2026, in which China-linked actors UTA0560 and JungleBamboo (APT31) chained CVE-2026-85046 (V8 type confusion), CVE-2026-87491 (WebAssembly sandbox escape), and CVE-2026-85880 (Windows kernel privilege escalation in RtlpCreateServerAcl). Victims were lured via links on legitimate U.S. university sites vulnerable to reflected XSS, then served hidden exploit iframes behind a donation-form image. Although a V8 fix had landed in Chromium's source after private August reporting, Chrome had not yet shipped it, creating a patch gap the actors exploited. The two groups installed distinct payloads: UTA0560 delivered the GRIMWEDGE JScript backdoor via DLL side-loading, while JungleBamboo used the SUPERSTOMP loader to install the LONGTALE credential-stealing Chrome extension disguised as Google Gemini.

Attackers are weaponizing the gap between Chromium fixes and Chrome patches

Espionage actors use the BlueMoon exploit kit to chain Chrome V8 and Windows kernel zero-days via spear phishing, gaining full admin on unpatched endpoints.

Proofpoint, working with Google Threat Intelligence Group, Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center and Volexity, reports that the BlueMoon exploit kit chains V8 type confusion CVE-2026-85046, V8 sandbox escape CVE-2026-87491 and Windows kernel LPE CVE-2026-85880, all rated high severity. The V8 flaws were fixed in upstream Chromium source but had not yet reached Chrome stable releases, creating a patch gap that attackers reverse-engineered and weaponized. A China-aligned state-sponsored actor used the kit from August 28 against a small number of US NGOs, mining and commodity trading firms via rapport-building spear phishing, and within days several mostly China-linked espionage clusters adopted BlueMoon. The chain yields full Windows admin privileges from a single phishing click; defenders should patch Chrome and Windows, apply Proofpoint detections and hunt for leftover artifacts.

CVE-2025-25249 (CVSS 8.1) is a heap-based buffer overflow in FortiOS/FortiSwitchManager's cw_acd daemon being exploited with the PivotC2 RAT, and CVE-2026-19490 (CVSS 9.3) is a NetScaler SAML HTTP-Redirect authentication bypass; federal agencies must patch by September 12, 2026.

BlueMoon exploit kit turns Chrome and Windows flaws into attacks

Proofpoint documents BlueMoon exploit kit used by four espionage groups to chain Chrome V8 and Windows flaws via phishing, all now in CISA's KEV.

Proofpoint identified a shared Chrome and Windows exploit kit, BlueMoon, used by four espionage groups against Chrome on Windows within days of one another. Attacks began with phishing emails leading to web pages that exploited two Chrome V8 vulnerabilities, followed by a Windows flaw to escape browser protections and gain higher privileges. The Chrome flaws were patched in Stable on September 3 and 8, 2026, the Windows flaw was fixed in September Patch Tuesday, and all three were actively exploited and added to CISA's KEV catalog. Researchers found clues, but no conclusive evidence, that the kit was developed with AI assistance.

Hackers Chain Chrome and Windows Zero-Days in New BlueMoon Exploit Kit Attacks

Multiple espionage actors, mostly China-nexus, are chaining Chrome V8 and Windows kernel zero-days (CVE-2026-85046, CVE-2026-85880) via the BlueMoon exploit kit against government and defense targets.

Proofpoint identified a new exploit kit dubbed BlueMoon chaining a Chromium V8 type-confusion RCE (CVE-2026-85046), a V8 sandbox escape, and a Windows kernel LPE (CVE-2026-85880). At least four distinct threat clusters, most with suspected China nexus, adopted the kit within days starting with TA412 (Violet Typhoon/APT31) on August 28, 2026. Both Chrome-side flaws were patch-gap zero-days with roughly a four-week exploitation window; the Windows LPE only works on Windows 10 and Server 2019/2022. TA412 used spearphishing posing as university interns to deliver the GemStone browser backdoor disguised as a Google Gemini extension; other clusters delivered ShadowPad via DLL sideloading and a Rust loader against targets in aerospace, government, and finance.

Hackers Abuse Google Sheets as C2 in ClickFix Attacks to Steal Cryptocurrency

Cisco Talos tracks a ClickFix crypto-theft campaign using Google Sheets as C2 to swap deposit addresses in Chrome.

Cisco Talos uncovered a cryptocurrency theft campaign that abuses Google Sheets and the Google Visualization API as a covert C2 channel, delivering obfuscated JavaScript into victims' Chrome browser sessions via ClickFix-style social engineering. Victims are lured with a fake "API Logic Flaw" report promising 25-38% bonuses on SimpleSwap and SwapZone swaps; the injected payload acts as a browser-based web skimmer that replaces deposit addresses, overrides the fetch API, and hijacks the clipboard. Later variants use the legitimate Tampermonkey extension with a user script for persistence without OS-level compromise. Talos identified 49 Bitcoin wallets, with 24 reused addresses receiving about 0.159 BTC (~$10,000) before mixing through more than 3,000 addresses.

ClickFix moves into the browser: Cryptocurrency theft with Google-hosted C2

Talos tracks a crypto-theft campaign abusing the Google Visualization API for C2, using browser-based ClickFix lures to inject web-skimmer JavaScript.

Criminal actors convinced targets to paste JavaScript into Chrome's address bar or install it in the Tampermonkey extension, injecting a web skimmer into sessions on two cryptocurrency trading websites; Tampermonkey also provides persistence. Since March 2026 the campaign retrieved obfuscated scripts via the Google Visualization API from public Google Sheets documents, hooking the fetch API and replacing cryptocurrency deposit addresses in responses and the clipboard. Lures pose as leaked reports of a nonexistent API flaw at cryptocurrency swap services and spread via Telegram, DarkForums, and paste sites since early October 2025. Talos warns the legitimate-service-abuse techniques could enable wider supply-chain attacks on e-commerce and customer-facing systems.

AmnesiaStealer Gives Attackers Live Control of Victims’ macOS Browsers

Jamf Threat Labs analyzed AmnesiaStealer, a Rust-based macOS infostealer spread via fake GitHub pages that also grants live hidden browser control.

AmnesiaStealer is a three-stage Rust infostealer distributed through counterfeit GitHub download pages using the ClickFix technique, a lure shared with Atomic Stealer and MacSync campaigns. It harvests the keychain, 16 Chromium browsers, Apple Notes, Telegram and documents, reusing a password captured via a fake installer dialog. A third-stage stream module clones the victim's browser profile headlessly and lets operators drive the session via Chrome DevTools Protocol, while persistence uses a LaunchDaemon impersonating Apple's com.apple.ReportCrash.agent. On macOS 26 it may replace Chrome's Safe Storage key, a useful detection signal.

Kimwolf botnet rebuilt to survive takedowns, researchers say

Palo Alto Unit 42 reports the Kimwolf/Aisuru botnet now uses HTTP/2 Chrome-impersonation floods and Ethereum blockchain-based command resolution to survive takedowns.

Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42 says a new Kimwolf/Aisuru botnet version active since February conducts DDoS floods over HTTP/2 with full Chrome browser fingerprints, making attack traffic hard to distinguish from real users. The malware resolves command servers via the Ethereum Name Service using five shuffled Ethereum endpoints, with a Tor hidden service fallback, so authorities cannot seize a domain or serve a takedown order. The botnet, powered mostly by hijacked Android TV boxes and IoT devices, previously had servers seized and an alleged operator arrested; new C2 infrastructure traces to a single network in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is unclear whether the same developers built the new version.

PentestGPT: Open-source automated penetration testing agentic framework

Open-source PentestGPT runs autonomous LLM-driven penetration tests via Claude Code and Codex, with legacy human-in-the-loop mode supporting many providers.

PentestGPT, originally published at USENIX Security 2024 by Gelei Deng and colleagues, is an open-source framework that lets a large language model autonomously run penetration testing stages (recon, exploit, walkthrough) with no human in the loop, driving Claude Code or Codex CLIs. A legacy interactive mode uses three cooperating LLM sessions maintaining a Pentesting Task Tree and supports OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, xAI, Qwen, Moonshot, and local models via Ollama. The tool sends anonymous telemetry to Langfuse by default, excluding command outputs, credentials, and flags, and is available free on GitHub.

Chrome adopts what may be the best protection yet against account takeovers

Chrome adopts device-bound session credentials that tie login sessions to a specific device, defending against cookie-theft account takeover attacks.

Chrome is adopting device-bound session credentials, which bind authenticated sessions to the physical device rather than to transferable cookies. The mechanism targets a common account takeover technique in which attackers steal session cookies and replay them on other machines. Ars Technica characterizes it as possibly the strongest protection yet against this class of takeover, which has become increasingly common.

  • Actively Exploited V8 Type Confusion in Google Chrome (CVE-2026-85046)
Google Chrome versions prior to 152.0.7977.82 contain a type confusion flaw (CWE-843) in the V8 JavaScript engine, which mishandles object types during engine operations (public proof-of-concept writeups indicate it is reachable through array sorting and WebAssembly-related code paths). A remote attacker triggers the flaw simply by getting a user to open a crafted HTML page, with no privileges or authentication required. Successful exploitation lets the attacker execute arbitrary code inside the browser's sandbox, and public reporting shows it being chained with Windows zero-days (the 'BlueMoon' exploit kit) by Chinese espionage groups for broader compromise. Any user of an unpatched Chrome or another build embedding the affected V8 engine is exposed. The vulnerability is a zero-day that was actively exploited in the wild before patching, was added to CISA's KEV on 2026-09-04, and has five public proof-of-concept references.

  • Actively Exploited Out-of-Bounds Write in Google Chrome V8
CVE-2026-87491 is an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) in the V8 JavaScript engine in Google Chrome, fixed in Chrome 153.0.8010.36, which Google shipped alongside roughly 230 other security fixes. An attacker can trigger the flaw remotely by luring a user (user interaction required) into opening a crafted HTML page that corrupts memory in V8. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the Chrome browser sandbox, which constrains but does not eliminate the impact. All Google Chrome users running versions prior to 153.0.8010.36 are affected; because the flaw resides in V8, CISA tracks it as 'Google Chromium V8', and other Chromium-based browsers may inherit the fix in their own updates. The flaw is being actively exploited in the wild — it is the seventh actively exploited Chrome zero-day of 2026 and was added to CISA's KEV catalog on 2026-09-09 — though no public proof-of-concept is known and ransomware use is unknown.

  • Heap-Based Buffer Overflow in Windows ALPC Enables Local Privilege Escalation
CVE-2026-85880 is a heap-based buffer overflow in Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC), the Windows mechanism for local inter-process communication. An authorized local attacker can trigger the overflow by submitting crafted input over ALPC, corrupting heap memory in the component that handles the request. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute code with elevated privileges, typically gaining SYSTEM-level control of the local host, which is especially valuable as a post-exploitation or sandbox-escape step. Affected products include Windows 10 (1607, 1809, 21H2, 22H2) and Windows Server 2012, 2016, 2019, and 2022, meaning most on-premises Windows estates are in scope. The flaw was fixed in Microsoft's record 974-CVE September 2026 Patch Tuesday and was added to CISA's KEV on 2026-09-08, confirming exploitation in the wild; press reports describe Windows zero-days being chained with a Chrome zero-day in 'BlueMoon' kit attacks, though the data does not explicitly confirm this CVE is the Windows flaw in that chain.

  • Use-After-Free in Google Chrome's Dawn (WebGPU) Component Enables Arbitrary Code Execution
CVE-2026-5281 is a use-after-free vulnerability in Dawn, the WebGPU implementation in Google Chrome, that Google patched in Chrome 146.0.7680.178. It is triggered when a remote attacker serves a crafted HTML page and can leverage it after having already compromised the Chrome renderer process, escalating to arbitrary code execution beyond the initial foothold. Because the flaw requires a compromised renderer as a starting point, it is typically chained with another bug (such as a renderer-exploiting issue) to break out to arbitrary code execution with real impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Any user or organization running Google Chrome on a version prior to 146.0.7680.178 is affected. The flaw is confirmed as exploited in the wild: CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2026-04-01, and its EPSS score of 4.9% (92nd percentile) indicates a meaningful near-term exploitation probability.

  • Out-of-Bounds Read/Write in Google Chrome V8 Enables In-Sandbox Code Execution
CVE-2026-11645 is an out-of-bounds read and write (CWE-125/CWE-787) in V8, the JavaScript engine used by Google Chrome and Chromium. A remote attacker triggers the flaw by luring a user to a crafted HTML page, where malicious script causes V8 to read and write outside allocated memory buffers. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the browser's security sandbox, providing limited privileges within that process rather than full system compromise. All Google Chrome versions prior to 149.0.7827.103 are affected, along with the Chromium V8 component identified by CISA. The flaw is being exploited in the wild: CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2026-06-09, and related headlines describe an actively exploited Chrome V8 zero-day, though no public proof-of-concept is known and ransomware use is unconfirmed.

  • Use-After-Free in Google Chromium CSS Rendering Exposes Chrome, Edge, Opera Users
CVE-2026-2441 is a use-after-free (CWE-416) in Google Chromium's CSS handling that a remote attacker can trigger by getting a user's browser to process a crafted HTML page, potentially corrupting the heap. Successful exploitation yields a memory-corruption primitive in the browser; CVSS scoring is not yet available, but Chromium memory-safety flaws of this class can range from crashes to potential code execution depending on how the corruption is leveraged. Anyone running Chromium or a Chromium-based browser — Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and numerous embedded/branded browsers — is potentially affected, making the exposed population effectively all modern browser users. CISA added the flaw to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2026-02-17, confirming it is being exploited in the wild; EPSS assigns a 22% probability of exploitation within 30 days (98th percentile), no public PoC is known, and any ransomware association is unknown. This lands amid an accelerating series of actively exploited Chrome zero-days in 2026 described in recent reporting, making rapid patching urgent.

  • Out-of-Bounds Memory Flaw in Google Chrome V8 Allows Sandboxed Code Execution
CVE-2026-3910 is an out-of-bounds memory flaw — CISA classifies it as improper restriction of operations within the bounds of a memory buffer — caused by an inappropriate implementation in the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine used in Google Chrome. A remote attacker triggers it by luring a user to a crafted HTML page, so exploitation requires user interaction but no privileges or special conditions. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the Chrome sandbox, which confines the compromise to the renderer process rather than the full system, but still exposes data and credentials handled within the browser session. Anyone running Google Chrome prior to 146.0.7680.75 — or a Chromium-based browser that embeds the vulnerable V8 code — is affected. The flaw is being actively exploited in the wild: CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2026-03-13, and it comes amid a string of actively exploited Chrome V8 zero-days that Google has fixed during 2026.

  • Use-After-Free in WebGL in Google Chrome Allows Code Execution Outside the Sandbox
CVE-2026-87464 is a use-after-free (CWE-416) in the WebGL component of Google Chrome affecting versions prior to 153.0.8010.36. A remote attacker can trigger it by luring a user to open a crafted HTML page, which corrupts memory in the browser's WebGL rendering path. Successful exploitation allows arbitrary code execution outside the browser sandbox, meaning the attacker escapes Chrome's process isolation and runs code with the privileges of the browser on the host. All Chrome users running an unpatched version before 153.0.8010.36 are affected. As of now there is no public proof-of-concept and this specific flaw is not in CISA KEV, although the Chrome 153 release headlines reference a separate V8 zero-day that was exploited in the wild.

  • Use-After-Free in Google Chrome Cast Allows Sandbox-Escaping Code Execution
CVE-2026-87628 is a use-after-free (CWE-416) in the Cast component of Google Chrome, rated Critical by Chromium, that is triggered when the browser processes crafted network traffic sent by an attacker on an adjacent network (e.g., the same LAN segment). A successful attack can allow the adjacent attacker to execute arbitrary code outside the Chrome sandbox, a stronger outcome than typical renderer-only bugs because it escapes Chrome's containment model. All Google Chrome versions prior to 153.0.8010.36 are affected; the flaw is fixed in Chrome 153.0.8010.36, part of the Chrome 153 release that ships 230 security fixes. No public proof-of-concept is known, the bug is not in CISA KEV, and EPSS estimates only a 0.2% chance of exploitation within 30 days, so there is no known exploitation of this specific Cast bug. Note that the actively exploited zero-day in the Chrome 153 headlines is a separate V8 flaw that allows code execution only inside the sandbox, and should not be confused with this outside-the-sandbox Cast issue.
