Romance scam doc, Super Scam Me, takes viewers deep into love-bombing terrain
National Geographic’s Super Scam Me documents romance scams the FTC says cost Americans about $1.5 billion yearly.
National Geographic’s documentary Super Scam Me follows investigative journalist Mariana van Zeller into romance scams, including a fake Jon Bon Jovi Instagram account that solicits large sums. The FTC says these scams cost Americans nearly $1.5 billion a year and often target older women on Instagram or dating apps such as Match and Tinder. Van Zeller posed as an antiques dealer and engaged a scammer in Ghana who impersonated a military general named Mark Turner. Most victims do not recover funds, and Experian has warned that AI is making overseas scammers more convincing.
