Hackers deploy Linux rootkit on F5 BIG-IP APM devices, hiding web shell in memory

Sophos analyzed a Linux rootkit, tracked as PoisonedRefresh, on hacked F5 BIG-IP APM devices hiding an in-memory web shell linked to exploited CVE-2025-53521.

Sophos and ESET analyzed an implant (named PoisonedRefresh by ESET) deployed on compromised F5 BIG-IP APM appliances, which serves enterprise, financial, government, and public sector deployments. The second-stage payload intercepts __libc_start_main, hooks Apache's APR module loader (apr_dso_load), RC4-encodes key strings, and rewrites PHP file reads in memory to embed a web shell inside legitimate scripts like apm_css.php3, full_wt.php3, and webtop_popup_css.php3, leaving on-disk files unchanged. A related installer component infects /usr/sbin/httpd, persists across BIG-IP upgrade images, modifies SELinux configuration, and deploys the payload. The malware also creates a Unix domain socket at /run/bigtlog.pipe that hands authenticated local connections to /bin/bash; F5 links the activity to CVE-2025-53521, an unauthenticated RCE in BIG-IP APM already exploited in the wild.

Hackers Weaponize Agentic AI to Automate Reconnaissance, Exploitation and Post-Exploitation

Google GTIG reports threat actors using agentic AI to automate reconnaissance, exploit selection, and credential harvesting, compromising thousands of secrets.

Google Threat Intelligence Group's Q3 2026 AI Threat Tracker documents threat actors operationalizing agentic AI: in one Mandiant investigation, a financially motivated actor built and executed a credential-harvesting operation in under six hours, with an exposed 'Recon' framework managing more than 23,800 harvested secrets including cloud and AI-service API keys. A Chinese-speaking actor tracked as knaithe used a DeepSeek-powered Hermes Agent for automated reconnaissance and vulnerability enumeration, pivoting from Langflow to n8n and enabling manual exploitation of exposed Citrix NetScaler, Marimo, Apache Tomcat, and VPN infrastructure. Operators harvested Citrix session cookies from process memory to bypass MFA, obtained AWS credentials from compromised Marimo instances, and deployed the Go-based NKAbuse backdoor, with reported RCE and data exfiltration. Google notes fully autonomous end-to-end AI attack pipelines have not yet been observed in the wild.

  • JNDI Injection Remote Code Execution in Apache Log4j2 (Log4Shell)
Apache Log4j2, an extremely widely used Java logging library, fails to protect its JNDI lookup feature against attacker-controlled JNDI-related endpoints (CWE-20, CWE-502), so crafted text processed by the logger causes the Java runtime to fetch and load attacker-supplied objects, leading to remote code execution. The flaw is triggered whenever attacker-controlled input reaches the logging API and is parsed for JNDI lookups, a pattern common in web servers and enterprise Java applications that log user-supplied fields such as headers or form values. Successful exploitation yields arbitrary code execution under the privileges of the affected application, giving attackers a foothold for lateral movement, data theft, and ransomware deployment. Any Java application or product that ships or bundles an affected Apache Log4j2 release is exposed, making this one of the most broadly deployed vulnerabilities ever disclosed. Exploitation is confirmed in the wild: CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2021-12-10 with known ransomware use, and EPSS assigns a 100% probability of exploitation within 30 days.

  • ReDoS in Apache OpenNLP built-in EMAIL and URL regex name finders
CVE-2026-82617 is a regular-expression denial-of-service flaw (CWE-1333, inefficient regex complexity) in the two built-in name-finder patterns, EMAIL and URL, exposed by opennlp.tools.namefind.RegexNameFinderFactory in Apache OpenNLP. An application that obtains these finders via RegexNameFinderFactory.getDefaultRegexNameFinders(...) and applies them to untrusted text through RegexNameFinder.find(String[]) or find(String) can be driven into quadratic backtracking or unbounded matcher recursion by small crafted inputs: roughly 32 KB of text burns several seconds of CPU per EMAIL scan and returns no match, while roughly 4 KB of &-separated URL query tokens exhausts the thread stack and raises java.lang.StackOverflowError (about 1 KB suffices on worker threads with reduced stacks such as -Xss512k). Because no authentication or special configuration is needed, anyone who can control the text fed to these finders can convert each request into seconds to minutes of pinned CPU or abrupt thread death, denying service to the embedding application. Affected are applications embedding Apache OpenNLP 2.0.0 through 2.5.11 or 3.0.0-M1 through 3.0.0-M5 that have selected one of these two built-in finders; the flaw is specific to the built-in EMAIL/URL patterns and does not implicate model-based NER usage. Apache ActiveMQ Artemis fails to bound the evaluation cost of message selectors, so a selector with crafted wildcard usage can trigger excessive processing (CWE-1333) each time the broker attempts message delivery. An authenticated client triggers it by attaching a consumer whose selector contains the crafted wildcards, and each delivery attempt then occupies a shared broker thread for a disproportionate amount of time. By sustaining this load (with one or more such consumers), the attacker can tie up broker threads and stall or degrade message delivery for other clients, achieving denial of service with no privilege escalation or data exposure. All users running Apache Artemis 2.50.0 through 2.56.0 or Apache ActiveMQ Artemis 1.0.0 through 2.44.0 are affected, which in practice covers essentially every Artemis release before 2.57.0 across standalone and embedded broker deployments. The flaw has no CVSS score yet, no known public proof-of-concept, is not listed in CISA KEV, and there are no known reports of exploitation in the wild.
