AIJon: Automated Generation of Annotations for Fuzzing

AIJON uses LLMs to auto-generate IJON-style fuzzing annotations, matching human-expert quality on the Magma benchmark.

Researchers replicate IJON experiments and propose AIJON, a system that uses LLMs to automatically generate expert-style annotations for coverage-guided fuzzing at scale. On the Magma benchmark, LLM-generated annotations performed comparably to human-generated ones, though annotation-based fuzzing was not strictly better than AFL++. The paper analyzes how annotations affect fuzzer energy distribution across campaigns.

GoDeep: Annotation-Free Open-Vocabulary 3D Scene Understanding via Language-Space Lifting

GoDeep achieves annotation-free open-vocabulary 3D segmentation by grounding structured image descriptions in language-only embeddings, outperforming CLIP-based lifting on out-of-vocabulary objects.

GoDeep uses a vision-language model purely as a translator, producing structured entity-level image descriptions that are grounded, projected, and aggregated in a general-purpose language-only embedding space, with no 3D training corpus or dedicated 3D encoder required. On ScanNet++ the pipeline is competitive with strong annotation-free baselines, and on a cultural-heritage benchmark a systematic vocabulary correction reverses initial CLIP-based rankings. Language-space embeddings separate genuinely out-of-vocabulary objects more sharply, localize them within scenes, and keep all predictions explainable as discrete text.

Q&A on Any Spreadsheet Requires Interpreting Its Grid Structure

A cell-role annotation framework improves spreadsheet chunking for LLM-driven RAG, but the authors argue discrete classification cannot fully capture 2D grid structure.

The paper proposes splitting spreadsheets into interpretable chunks using semantic cell role annotation, improving chunking interpretability for LLM-driven RAG systems. It beats the state of the art on answer generation through enriched context but hits a hard ceiling, since finite predefined classes cannot capture spreadsheets' continuous relationships and infinite potential cell roles. The authors argue the field must develop dimensionality-reduction techniques that directly flatten 2D unstructured spreadsheets into 1D text for downstream RAG.

Studying Image Tokenizers as Visual Languages in Unified Multimodal Models

A controlled autoregressive testbed shows validation losses must be analyzed per task, and image tokenizer choice affects joint multimodal text modeling.

Researchers built a pure-autoregressive testbed to study image tokenizers as the 'visual language' of unified multimodal models, tracking task-specific validation losses during multimodal continual pretraining across text, image, text-to-image (T2I), and image-to-text (I2T) prediction. They found that losses exhibit distinct scaling behavior per task and rank tokenizers differently, and that I2T loss over a shared text vocabulary gives a more consistent loss–performance signal than T2I loss. Better reconstruction does not necessarily yield lower task-specific losses or stronger downstream performance, and tokenizer choice can affect text modeling under joint optimization. Case studies examine the discriminator, semantic supervision, and vocabulary size design axes.

SpatialBlock: Enhancing Spatial Intelligence in LVLMs via Synthetic Block-Stacking Problem

Researchers release SpatialBlock-15k, a synthetic block-stacking dataset that improves 3D spatial reasoning in large vision-language models without dense geometric annotations.

The paper addresses limited spatial intelligence in LVLMs by training on structured block-manipulation tasks instead of costly real-scene annotated datasets. SpatialBlock-15k contains 15,000 synthetic problems covering 3D-to-2D projection, viewpoint transformation, and structural combination, with color modulation as visual cues. LVLMs trained on it via direct answering or reasoning-based prediction outperform baselines and generalize to real-world spatial tasks. Code and data are released on GitHub.

Better Vector Search for Long Documents: Chunking Inside Manticore Search

Manticore Search added automatic document chunking for vector columns, lifting long-document recall@5 from 55.1% to 83.3% in its benchmarks.

Manticore Search introduced a chunk_strategy option for model-backed vector columns in CREATE TABLE, offering five strategies (truncate, mean, fixed, recursive, sentence) with tunable max_tokens, overlap_tokens, and max_chunks, eliminating external splitters and separate chunk tables. On its 189-page, ~298k-word manual, sentence chunking improved recall@5 from 55.1% to 83.3% and MRR from 0.44 to 0.70, at roughly 2.5x RAM and 4x ingest time. Documents still return as single results; queries are never chunked.

TransNormal-2: Geometry-Grounded Rectified Flow with Edge-Aware Decoding for Precise Normal Estimation

TransNormal-2 improves monocular surface-normal estimation by fixing VAE edge degradation with geometry-aware losses and refinement, matching MoGe-2 with 1.4% of annotations.

TransNormal-2 is a FLUX.2-based rectified-flow framework for monocular surface-normal estimation with single-step deterministic inference. The authors quantify that VAE 8x spatial compression introduces 1.3-8.5 degrees of mean angular error even on ground-truth normals, with edge error up to 2.8x the global error. The method adds geometry-aware pixel-space losses and an RGB-guided Geometric Refinement Module to correct boundary-localized decoding errors. It matches or exceeds MoGe-2 on all eight reported metrics using only 1.4% as many task-specific annotations, and cuts transparent-object MAE by 4.2 degrees on ClearGrasp and 3.1 degrees on ClearPose.

Studying Image Tokenizers as Visual Languages in Unified Multimodal Models

A controlled pure-autoregressive testbed shows task-specific validation losses rank image tokenizers differently, with I2T loss the most consistent signal.

Researchers built a controlled pure-autoregressive testbed and tracked task-specific validation losses during multimodal continual pretraining across text, image, text-to-image (T2I), and image-to-text (I2T) prediction. They find losses should be analyzed per task because they exhibit distinct scaling behavior and rank tokenizers differently, and that the loss-performance relationship depends on the predicted token space. I2T loss, computed over a shared text vocabulary, correlates consistently with both generation and visual understanding performance after supervised finetuning. Case studies revisit the discriminator, semantic supervision, and vocabulary size as tokenizer design axes.

LLM Classification Is Feature Engineering

Argues LLM classifiers should feed a downstream logistic regression, yielding calibration, threshold control, and principled use of structured covariates.

The post contends that LLM-as-classifier setups suffer from poorly calibrated hard labels, opaque use of prompt context and structured data, and weak interpretability. Wrapping the LLM verdict as a feature in a logistic regression restores calibrated probabilities, precision–recall threshold control, and the ability to incorporate additional covariates. Further gains can come from more training data, richer features such as log probabilities and subverdicts, and swapping in downstream models like xgboost or neural networks. An irony detection test case illustrates the approach.

Technical Manual for a Toolkit for Measuring Contextual Individuation in Transformer Language Models

An open methodology toolkit measures whether transformer language models contextualize fixed word forms across domains using bridge forms and layer-wise silhouette analysis.

The manual documents an open toolkit built around 'bridge forms' - identical written words recurring across two or more subject domains with a different sense in each - to test whether transformer language models individuate word occurrences by context beyond the embedding layer. It covers declarative specification of bridge forms, Wikipedia corpus acquisition, occurrence localization, layer-wise representation extraction, domain-pairwise silhouette measurement, and visualization, justifying each choice against failure modes such as sense contamination and subword-tokenization misalignment. It is a methodological and implementation reference and reports no empirical results.

Cyber Exodus: Burnout Symptoms, Exit Intention, and Peer Response in Online Cybersecurity Communities

Text analysis of 354,861 security practitioner posts shows burnout symptoms differ in causes, and mental distance predicts exit intention peers respond to least.

Researchers adapted the Burnout Assessment Tool into a text annotation scheme, reaching macro F1 of 0.75 across four symptoms and 0.98 for detecting any burnout signal. They applied it to 354,861 posts and 296,442 replies from five online cybersecurity practitioner communities. The four symptoms point to distinct workplace problems; mental distance is the only symptom unrelated to operational issues and co-occurs with stated intention to leave roughly twice as often as other symptoms. When posters mention leaving, peer replies shift toward career advice, but this shift is smallest for mental distance.

Augustinian BabyLM: What Ostensive Definition Can and Cannot Teach a Small Language Model

Study shows visually grounded token embeddings in a small masked LM persist through training and improve object-property knowledge, but escape standard BabyLM benchmarks.

The paper implements ostensive definition for a small DeBERTa masked language model trained on 10M words, seeding visually grounded tokens with embeddings derived from labeled image regions before training. Visual initialization leaves a persistent, seed-replicated advantage on object-property knowledge (COMPS) and a corpus-tailored Visual-Property Swap benchmark covering color, material, size, and shape, but has no effect on most BabyLM grammar benchmarks. Synthetic grounding of previously unseeded words causally transfers the advantage to exactly those words.

How AI wiped out an entire industry in Nairobi

ChatGPT's rise collapsed Kenya's contract essay-writing industry, which once employed 40,000 people in Nairobi, cutting $40–70-per-paper earnings after 2022.

The New York Times reports that generative AI, primarily ChatGPT, wiped out Kenya's ghostwriting business, which at its peak employed at least 40,000 people in Nairobi writing academic papers for US and UK students. Writers like Teresios Bundi, who produced over 2,500 papers in twelve years, saw prices and orders collapse after ChatGPT's 2022 launch. Related gig work such as transcription, data annotation, and Meta content moderation has also dried up, leaving 'humanizers' who rewrite AI text to evade plagiarism checks. Kenya's government had promoted online gig work since 2016, and roughly 80 percent of the country's jobs are informal.

Cross-Model Agreement as a Deployment-Time Reliability Signal for Automatic Polyp Segmentation

Referee-Based Quality Estimation flags unreliable polyp segmentations at inference without ground truth, reaching ROC-AUC 0.960 with SegFormer-B0 referees.

RBQE measures agreement between a primary segmentation model and an independently trained referee on a 1,223-image external benchmark drawn from four public datasets. A cross-architecture SegFormer-B0 referee achieves the strongest signal (ROC-AUC 0.960), beating a Test-Time Augmentation baseline by 0.055 ROC-AUC under an identical protocol. Excluding trivially separable empty-mask cases, ROC-AUC falls to 0.876 (SegFormer-B0) and 0.783 (same-architecture control), but RBQE's margin over baselines widens. Progressive rejection of low-agreement predictions increases mean Dice of retained outputs, supporting selective prediction at the cost of one extra forward pass.

Depth still cuts root context exposure from N to N^(1/k) and is cheaper at scale, with a hazard model over 743,819 production tool calls showing delegation is an opening move rather than a response to filling context.
