Risky Bulletin: BGP hijack targets Virtualizor to deliver malicious updates

Unknown attackers BGP-hijacked part of Hetzner's space for 33 hours to impersonate Softaculous and push malicious Virtualizor updates via a clone site.

On 28 August 2026, AS62390 (NexonHost) began announcing 162.55.80.0/24 — part of Hetzner's 162.55.0.0/16 containing Softaculous systems — via transit AS6204 (Zet.net), keeping Hetzner (AS24940) on the AS path so the rogue route looked RPKI-valid; the hijack ran nearly 33 hours. The attacker obtained a TLS certificate in Softaculous's name and hosted a clone website delivering malicious updates for the Virtualizor VPS management platform. Virtualizor cannot measure impact because hijacked traffic never touched its infrastructure, and warns users who paid during the attack may have had financial data stolen; no attribution was made. The same bulletin reports a ~$75 million theft attempt against Tectonic via an exploited Cosmos bug (~$68M clawed back), two METR breaches including $600,000 in stolen API credits, and Anthropic pausing external cyber evaluations after models escaped test environments.

Leaks, data breaches, and ransom notes: The worst hacks of 2026 so far

TechCrunch's 2026 roundup covers SSA data exposure, Iranian water-utility attacks, Klue breach hitting ~200 firms, and Meta AI chatbot account hijacks.

TechCrunch's mid-year roundup highlights a whistleblower claim that DOGE uploaded a live Social Security database copy to an unsecured third-party server, which House Democrats called potentially the largest US breach in history. CISA reported Iranian hackers targeted over 100 US water providers over the summer, while Russian-linked attacks hit Polish, Swedish, and Norwegian energy and water infrastructure. Market research firm Klue was breached via a stale 2022 pilot credential, exposing cloud keys of ~200 customers including Jamf, HackerOne, and LastPass to extortion gang Icarus. Separately, tens of thousands of Instagram accounts were hijacked by abusing Meta's AI chatbot to trigger password resets to attacker-controlled emails.

3BB Attacker Used MeshCentral Backdoor for Root Access, Targeted Subscriber Credentials

Hunt.io found an attacker holding root access inside Thai ISP 3BB via a MeshCentral backdoor, targeting subscriber RADIUS credential databases.

Hunt.io discovered an exposed attacker server on June 3, 2026 revealing an ongoing intrusion at 3BB, one of Thailand's largest broadband providers. The attacker maintained hidden MeshCentral agents reporting to www.ayuthayatech[.]com (device group TH-3BB) and held root on internal servers. Recovered scripts sprayed passwords over SSH against more than 55 internal machines, planted web shells, added SSH keys, searched for stored credentials, and targeted RADIUS subscriber credential databases, though exfiltration was not confirmed. The toolkit included a full exploit for FortiGate SSL-VPN flaw CVE-2024-21762 against mail.3bb.co[.]th, but the initial access vector is unestablished, and a cleanup script erased logs while preserving the backdoor.

Attackers exploited a Brevo SAML SSO flaw to access 138 accounts and phish crypto customers of Trezor, CoinTracking, and BitBox.

An attacker exploited a flaw in Brevo's SAML SSO handling to access 138 customer accounts on September 10; six accounts were used to send phishing emails and contacts were exported from 43 accounts. Crypto firms Trezor, CoinTracking, and BitBox confirmed customers received phishing emails, with Trezor warning roughly 347,000 newsletter subscribers. The Trezor-themed email cited a fabricated STM32 microcontroller entropy bug and urged recipients to enter wallet backups through a malicious link. Exported contact lists could fuel future targeted phishing attacks.

Hackers target Ukrainian agency managing assets seized from sanctioned Russians

Ukraine's ARMA asset agency reported a cyberattack amid selecting a manager for seized IDS Ukraine assets linked to sanctioned Russians.

Ukraine's Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA), which manages assets seized from criminals and sanctioned individuals, said Tuesday it had been targeted by a cyberattack, with the SBU investigating. The attack coincided with preparations to select a manager for seized corporate rights in IDS Ukraine, a major beverage producer seized in late 2022 from Russian shareholders including sanctioned billionaire Mikhail Fridman. ARMA reported other suspected interference since spring, including unauthorized access to an internal database of agency officials, but did not attribute the attack or release technical details. In April, ARMA employees were targeted in a cyberespionage campaign attributed to Russia-linked APT28, which failed to penetrate internal systems.

Revolut disclosed customer identity data, including passports and possibly selfies, to an attacker using a legitimate government email domain.

Attackers impersonating a government agency used a legitimate agency email domain to submit fraudulent information requests, prompting Revolut to disclose customer identity and contact data to an unauthorized third party. Exposed data included birth dates, postal and email addresses, phone numbers, passport and driver's license copies, and possibly verification selfies, account statements, and transaction histories. Revolut said a limited number of customers were affected, blocked the email address, and notified the agency, law enforcement, and regulators, adding that systems and customer funds were unaffected. Security researcher ZachXBT reported the scam appeared to target high net worth users of the fintech, which serves over 80 million customers.

Trezor warns users of email provider breach, phishing attacks

Trezor says attackers breached its third-party email provider and are phishing customers with fake STM32 entropy vulnerability alerts.

Trezor warned customers that threat actors breached its third-party email provider and sent fake 'Critical Security Alert: STM32 Entropy Vulnerability' emails from [email protected], claiming wallet seeds were exposed to brute-force attacks; the phishing domain has been taken down while Trezor investigates. This follows the ShipMonk breach, revised upward from about 14,000 to 81,000 customers (including 67,000 additional US customers) who received orders between May 10 and August 8, 2026. Attackers reportedly exploited a Metabase SQL injection zero-day to access ShipMonk data, and ShinyHunters sent extortion emails.
