CISA Warns of Microsoft SQL Server RCE Vulnerability Exploited in Attacks
CISA warns attackers are exploiting CVE-2019-1068, a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft SQL Server, to run malicious commands on database servers.
CISA warned that CVE-2019-1068, a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft SQL Server, is being exploited in active attacks. Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute malicious commands on a vulnerable database server, with access limited to the privileges of the SQL Server service account. The warning signals active exploitation of a long-known flaw and makes patching a priority for organizations running affected SQL Server deployments.

Microsoft's September Patch Tuesday fixes a record 964 CVEs, including two actively exploited Windows privilege-escalation zero-days, CVE-2026-81963 and CVE-2026-85880.
Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday addresses 964 customer-patchable CVEs (104 Critical, 860 Important), the largest release on record, out of 974 total listed. Two actively exploited zero-days are fixed: CVE-2026-81963, a link-following elevation-of-privilege flaw in the Windows Update Stack, and CVE-2026-85880, a Windows ALPC heap overflow enabling AppContainer sandbox escape, both with CVSS 7.8. Both zero-days were exploited before a patch was available and grant SYSTEM-level access after an initial foothold. The release also includes high-severity RCE fixes for Windows DNS Server, Remote Desktop Services, Exchange Server, SharePoint, and SQL Server.
Microsoft Patches Record 974 Vulnerabilities, Including Two Exploited Zero-Days
Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday fixes a record 974 CVEs, including two Windows zero-days exploited in the wild for privilege escalation.
Microsoft patched 974 vulnerabilities, its largest Patch Tuesday ever, including CVE-2026-85880, a heap buffer overflow in Windows ALPC allowing AppContainer sandbox escape to System, and CVE-2026-81963, a link-following flaw in the Windows Update Stack enabling local privilege escalation. Both were exploited as zero-days before the patch. ZDI's Dustin Childs says 20 of the fixed flaws are wormable, enabling unauthenticated remote code execution. The release also covers 723 Windows flaws and 222 Office bugs, plus fixes in Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, Azure and Exchange Server RCE (CVE-2026-55007).

Volexity, Proofpoint, MSTIC, and independent researchers were credited with the reports; notable additional fixes include network-reachable RCEs in Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, Remote Desktop Services, DNS, and DHCP.
Previously patched Citrix NetScaler flaw exploited in the wild (CVE-2026-8452)
Actively exploited Citrix NetScaler flaw CVE-2026-8452, patched in June, now added to CISA KEV; attackers deploy web shells and run discovery commands.
CISA added CVE-2026-8452, a memory overflow vulnerability in Citrix NetScaler ADC/Gateway, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on August 26, 2026, giving federal agencies until August 29 to remediate. Citrix disclosed and patched the flaw on June 30, 2026 in versions 14.1-72.61, 13.1-63.18, and 13.1-37.272. watchTowr Labs found the flaw can be chained into unauthenticated remote code execution and released a PoC on August 14. Previdian and Defused reported exploitation with web shells named x.php and z.php from at least three unique source IPs.
Attackers Chain Two PaperCut Flaws to Execute Code Without Authentication
Attackers chain PaperCut NG/MF flaws CVE-2026-81578 and CVE-2026-82078 for unauthenticated RCE; exploitation observed and a second emergency patch issued.
Two flaws in PaperCut NG and MF — CVE-2026-81578 (CVSS 8.8, improper access control enabling auth bypass) and CVE-2026-82078 (CVSS 9.4, unsafe dynamic class loading) — are being chained for unauthenticated remote code execution. Huntress observed limited exploitation on two customer environments, including Base64-encoded commands, 'whoami & ver' fingerprinting, SimpleHelp execution, and AnyDesk installation for persistence. PaperCut released a second emergency patch for v24, v25, and v26, but watchTowr reports additional patch bypasses may still affect the latest version. Shared IoCs include crafted jdbc strings in server.log and attacker-written .class/.cmd files.

Hackers Exploit FortiGate SSL-VPN Vulnerability to Attack Broadband Provider
Exposed attacker staging server reveals intrusion of Thai broadband provider 3BB via actively exploited FortiGate SSL-VPN flaw CVE-2024-21762.
Hunt.io found an open directory on server 92.63.180[.]133 holding 298 files detailing an intrusion into Triple T Broadband's 3BB brand, starting from a FortiGate 60F SSL-VPN at mail.3bb.co[.]th:10443. The actor weaponized CVE-2024-21762 (CVSS 9.8, KEV-listed since February 2024) using heap spraying and a ROP chain to gain a reverse shell. Post-exploitation included MeshCentral root-level persistence via www.ayuthayatech[.]com, Dirty COW/PwnKit privilege escalation, credential harvesting, SSH spraying against 55+ internal addresses, and log-deleting cleanup scripts; a stolen OpenVPN certificate and key from Triple T's PKI may still be valid.
GeoServer Zero-Day Targeted in Active Exploitation Attempts, Can Lead to RCE
A CVSS 9.8 SQL injection zero-day in GeoServer's PostGIS datastore enables RCE and drew active exploitation; fixes shipped in versions 3.0.1, 2.28.5, 2.27.6.
A SQL injection flaw in GeoServer's jsonArrayContains function within the GeoTools PostGIS datastore (GHSA-mqjf-5f49-2fjh, CVSS 9.8) was disclosed August 12, 2026, and saw hundreds of exploitation attempts within hours per watchTowr. An attacker-controlled value is interpolated into a PostgreSQL jsonb_path_exists() expression without escaping; with superuser or pg_execute_server_program privileges it escalates to OS command execution via WFS 1.0. GeoServer released versions 3.0.1, 2.28.5, and 2.27.6, and the flaw is a regression of CVE-2023-25158. GeoServer has a history of mass exploitation, including CVE-2024-36401 used for botnets and proxies.
