PaperCut warns of hackers using printer management software flaw in attacks

PaperCut warns of active exploitation of CVE-2026-82078 and CVE-2026-81578 in NG/MF print management software used by universities, corporations, and governments.

PaperCut issued an emergency advisory saying vulnerabilities in PaperCut NG and MF, tracked as CVE-2026-82078 and CVE-2026-81578 with severity scores above 8.8, are under active exploitation with confirmed customer incidents. Huntress reported at least two customers impacted, and an initial patch was revised with input from Huntress and watchTowr researchers. PaperCut software is widely deployed at universities, corporations, and governments managing printers from Canon, Epson, Xerox, and Brother, and the vendor urged removing server web interfaces from the public internet. Previous PaperCut flaws were used by ransomware gangs like Bl00dy and Clop, and CISA has warned the education sector is particularly exposed.

Two critical Chrome flaws put users at risk on malicious websites

Google patched 26 Chrome flaws, including two critical use-after-frees and an actively exploited V8 sandbox escape (CVE-2026-85046); update to 152.0.7977.82/.83.

Chrome's desktop update fixes 26 security issues, including critical use-after-free flaws CVE-2026-84353 in Shared Tab Groups and CVE-2026-84352 in WebGL, both allowing code execution outside the browser sandbox via crafted HTML pages. Google subsequently patched CVE-2026-85046, a high-severity V8 JavaScript engine flaw with exploits already in the wild that enables arbitrary code execution inside the Chrome sandbox; HKCERT rates the overall risk as extremely high. Fixed versions are 152.0.7977.82/.83 on Windows and Mac and 152.0.7977.82 on Linux.

Four Nation-State Actors Used the Same Chrome Zero-Day Exploit Kit Within 12 Days

Proofpoint reports four nation-state actors, mostly China-nexus, adopted the BlueMoon Chrome and Windows zero-day exploit kit within 12 days, targeting US organizations.

Proofpoint tracked an exploit kit dubbed BlueMoon that chains CVE-2026-85046, a Chrome V8 type-confusion bug, with an unnamed V8 sandbox escape and CVE-2026-85880, a Windows kernel privilege escalation using ALPC and the Windows Notification Facility. The first observed use was by China-nexus TA412 (APT31, Violet Typhoon, JungleBamboo) on August 28, 2026 against US NGOs, mining companies, and commodity trading firms, followed by UNK_LateNight targeting US aerospace and defense companies on September 2. Both V8 bugs were patch-gap zero-days: the fix was committed to Chromium on August 7 but reached stable Chrome on September 3, enabling rapid weaponization from public patches. TA412's post-exploitation payload, GemStone, is a malicious browser extension posing as an AI-powered Google Gemini companion that captures keystrokes, cookies, screenshots, and browsing history via a Cloudflare Worker C2.

Microsoft fixes record 964 flaws, including 2 exploited zero-days

Microsoft's September Patch Tuesday fixes a record 964 CVEs, including two actively exploited Windows privilege-escalation zero-days, CVE-2026-81963 and CVE-2026-85880.

Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday addresses 964 customer-patchable CVEs (104 Critical, 860 Important), the largest release on record, out of 974 total listed. Two actively exploited zero-days are fixed: CVE-2026-81963, a link-following elevation-of-privilege flaw in the Windows Update Stack, and CVE-2026-85880, a Windows ALPC heap overflow enabling AppContainer sandbox escape, both with CVSS 7.8. Both zero-days were exploited before a patch was available and grant SYSTEM-level access after an initial foothold. The release also includes high-severity RCE fixes for Windows DNS Server, Remote Desktop Services, Exchange Server, SharePoint, and SQL Server.

BGP hijack infecting networks caused by a comedy of errors that’s not funny at all

Attackers BGP-hijacked Softaculous IP space via Hetzner routing lapses to push malicious Virtualizor updates to hosting servers.

Unknown attackers hijacked the 162.55.80.0/24 prefix used by Softaculous' Virtualizor update service by abusing lax routing security at hosting provider Hetzner Online, announcing the range through AS6204, AS62390, and AS24940 with a forged but RPKI-valid origin. The hijack pulsed intermittently over roughly 33 hours, delivering modified update packages to Virtualizor servers, which lacked cryptographic code signing for updates. Softaculous says only a small number of servers were likely affected but cannot produce a definitive list, urging administrators to treat every Virtualizor server as in scope for checks.

CISA gives federal agencies two weeks to patch Microsoft bug exploited in DPRK campaign

CISA orders federal agencies to patch exploited Windows Winsock zero-day CVE-2026-68820 by August 25, used by Lazarus in Operation Dream Job.

CISA ordered federal agencies to patch Windows Winsock vulnerability CVE-2026-68820, rated 7/10, by August 25 after confirming exploitation; no workaround exists and a restart is required. Check Point found Lazarus Group hackers impersonated Lockheed Martin and Enveil recruiters on LinkedIn, sent malicious PDFs enabling long-term remote access, then used the zero-day to escalate from limited access to full system control. Targets spanned defense sectors including surveillance, drones and robotics in France, Germany, Brazil and India, as part of Operation Dream Job tracked since 2020.

Update Chrome now to protect against an actively exploited vulnerability

Google shipped Chrome 153.0.8010.36/.37 fixing 230 flaws including actively exploited V8 out-of-bounds write CVE-2026-87491 enabling sandboxed code execution.

Chrome stable channel updated to 153.0.8010.36/.37 for Windows and Mac and 153.0.8010.36 for Linux, including 230 security fixes. CVE-2026-87491 is an out-of-bounds write in Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine that a crafted HTML page can exploit to execute arbitrary code inside the browser sandbox; Google rates it medium severity, but it is confirmed as actively exploited. The update also fixes five Critical vulnerabilities, four of which were found in WebGL. Users should update via Settings > About Chrome and restart the browser.

Rogue ScreenConnect Installations Across Unrelated Hosts Suggest Worm-Like Activity

Huntress observed rogue ScreenConnect deployments with worm-like VBScript propagation across unrelated organizations, prompting a ConnectWise advisory on file transfer behavior.

Huntress identified multiple incidents in late August 2026 where social engineering led to rogue ScreenConnect remote access clients deployed on victim machines, which then spawned wscript.exe to run four VBScript payloads (1.vbs through 4.vbs) for profiling, telemetry collection, and persistence via a WindowsServiceHost Run key. Modified ScreenConnect clients propagated the VBScript chain to connected endpoints, creating worm-like spread. ConnectWise published an advisory on September 3, 2026, confirming an issue affecting file transfer behavior in both cloud and on-premises ScreenConnect deployments, with a CVE and fix expected within the week; partners were advised to review and disable TransferFiles permissions in the interim.
