HypoEvolve: Genetic Algorithms Enable Multi-Agent LLMs to Discover Scientific Hypotheses

HypoEvolve uses a generational genetic algorithm coordinating specialized LLM agents to generate scientific hypotheses, outperforming six baselines on cancer drug repurposing.

HypoEvolve is a framework that coordinates specialized LLM agents through a generational genetic algorithm to produce, revise, and retain scientific hypotheses with explicit collaboration roles. It evaluates drug repurposing hypotheses against external evidence from DepMap and Open Targets across 34 cancer types. It achieves the highest scores against six baselines, reaching DepMap selectivity of 0.171 versus 0.115 for the strongest baseline, and gains over single-pass generation generalize to held-out cancer types.

Train Smarter, Not Harder: Switching Signal-Guided Training in Active Learning

HybridAL is an active-learning training schedule that switches from retraining to fine-tuning on stabilization signals, saving up to 49% time.

Researchers find that choosing between retraining from scratch and fine-tuning is an exploitable decision variable in active learning: retraining helps in early rounds while fine-tuning is safer once the model trajectory stabilizes. HybridAL monitors an online stabilization signal using spectral exponent change and accuracy change, switching from retraining to fine-tuning after sustained stabilization. Across three encoder backbones and six text-classification tasks with five seeds each, HybridAL keeps endpoint macro-F1 non-inferior within a 0.010 margin, saves up to 49% of retraining time, and improves the time-calibration trade-off measured by negative log-likelihood.

CUA-Universe: A Scalable and Dynamic Environment for Hybrid GUI+CLI Agents

Researchers introduce CUA-Universe, a pipeline turning real desktop software into hybrid GUI+CLI agent environments, lifting a 9B model's OSWorld success rate.

CUA-Universe is an environment-to-data pipeline that converts real desktop applications into hybrid GUI+CLI environments, scaling to 16 applications via App-Forge, Task-Weave, and Path-Steer. Training on its harvested trajectories shifted a 9B model toward effective GUI+CLI orchestration, yielding +39.3 points on CUA-Verse, +16.8 points success rate on OSWorld, and +7.84 points on OSWorld-MCP while cutting steps and tokens by up to 57% and 60%. The work addresses the scarcity of scalable hybrid environments for computer-use agents.

Evidence-Grounded Agentic Formulation Development in an Autonomous Laboratory

Andromeda 2, an agentic laboratory system, reaches a 50% high-performance hit rate for paclitaxel SEDDS formulations versus 17% for its predecessor and 2% for DoE.

Andromeda 2 is an agentic system that reasons over structured in-house experimental evidence and invokes computational and experimental tools to design and execute successive formulation batches for self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS). For paclitaxel it achieved a 50% high-performance hit rate versus 17% for Andromeda 1 and 2% for a wet-lab DoE campaign, identifying 12 formulations meeting all four target product profile objectives versus 6 and 0. A selected full-TPP formulation reached approximately 19% w/w apparent paclitaxel loading, about 3.3-fold higher than a published paclitaxel S-SEDDS, and an ablation showed structured evidence access increased mean AUC by 34%.

HybridFLow: SDN-Orchestrated Client Partitioning for Hybrid Federated Learning

HybridFLow uses SDN topology visibility to partition federated-learning clients into sync/async groups, reaching 80% accuracy 33-40% faster than SmartFLow.

HybridFLow is a closed-loop, SDN-driven orchestration framework for hybrid federated learning that integrates network-layer intelligence into cross-silo training. It leverages the SDN controller's global topology view to generate calibrated per-client communication-time estimates, partitioning clients into synchronous and asynchronous groups while balancing round latency and update staleness, with measured times fed back after each round. Across multiple network topologies it reaches 80% target accuracy 33-40% faster than SmartFLow and cuts average round duration by 30-40 seconds, while FedAsync fails to reach target accuracy under non-IID data.

Type Diversity Enables Transformers to Generalise Compositionally

Researchers show lexical-versus-structural compositional generalization gaps in Transformers stem from type diversity imbalance in datasets, not architectural limits.

The paper argues that Transformers' difficulty with structural compositional generalization is an artifact of low structural type diversity in prior benchmark datasets rather than an architectural limitation. Using Grammatical Framework, the authors create linguistically diverse variants of COGS and SLOG. They find type diversity correlates with compositional generalization equally in lexical and structural test cases, contradicting previous claims that compound divergence explains task difficulty.

Attack Paths Into VMs in the Cloud

Unit 42 maps attack paths into AWS, Azure, and GCP VMs through intended features like startup scripts and SSH key pushes.

Palo Alto Unit 42 reviewed attack vectors against virtual machine services on AWS, Azure, and GCP, finding that 11% of internet-exposed cloud hosts carry Critical or High severity vulnerabilities. The attack paths rely on legitimate features such as EC2 User Data, VM custom data, EC2 Instance Connect, SSM Run Command, and serial consoles rather than vulnerabilities, and exploiting them requires attackers to first obtain control plane permissions. A compromised VM exposes not only its data but the workload identity and cloud permissions assigned to it, making identity compromise potentially more damaging than data theft. The firm places mitigation responsibility on cloud users and administrators.

Characterizing Language Generation in the Limit: Finite Witnesses and a Separation-Width Hierarch

New work characterizes language generation in the limit via finite witnesses, proves a full separation-width hierarchy, and formalizes all results in Lean.

The paper fully characterizes when language generation in the limit is possible for arbitrary families over a countable universe: each target must admit a finite positive witness such that targets activated by any finite sample share an infinite common intersection. It defines positive separation width and proves every level of the resulting hierarchy occurs, with countable families admitting singleton witnesses and unions of families with infinite common cores requiring unbounded finite witnesses. The characterization, a universal normalization, and a diagonal capture lemma are machine-checked in the Lean proof assistant, with the development maintained on GitHub.
