New AI Attack Hides Malicious Instructions in Normal-Looking Text to Evade Safety Filters

Check Point researchers show crafted prose hides policy-violating instructions that bypass all tested LLM gatekeepers, including GPT-4o mini and Llama Guard 3.

A new prompt-crafting technique embeds malicious payloads inside grammatical, natural-looking text without Base64, invisible Unicode, or obvious encodings, defeating lightweight pre-screening gatekeepers. In testing, all four evaluated gatekeeper models—gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18, gpt-oss-safeguard:20b, claude-3-haiku-20240307, and llama-guard3:8b—classified the crafted wrappers as safe at a 100% bypass rate across 23 obfuscated prompts. GPT-5 Thinking in high-reasoning mode recovered and acted on the hidden instruction in 17 of 18 tests (~94.4%), often spending over a minute and multiple Python executions. Researchers recommend paraphrasing untrusted input, hardening gatekeeper policies, and applying defense-in-depth controls for agentic deployments.

IAM Compliance Requirements and Best Practices

A guide maps IAM compliance requirements across SOX, PCI DSS, HIPAA, ISO 27001 and NIST 800-53, urging verified enforcement over documented policies.

The guide argues IAM compliance requires demonstrating that access controls are enforced at runtime, not merely documented, highlighting gaps between policy intent and application-layer execution. It maps recurring requirements across SOX ITGCs, PCI DSS v4.0, HIPAA, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, NIST SP 800-53 and GDPR, covering least privilege, separation of duties, access certification and audit trails. It recommends continuous, evidence-backed verification and application-layer telemetry instead of relying on identity provider logs or quarterly access reviews.

Predicting Privacy Leakage from Weight Spectral Density

Study shows WeightWatcher spectral metrics like stable rank correlate with membership inference vulnerability, enabling cheaper ML privacy auditing.

The paper tests whether spectral metrics from the heavy-tailed self-regularisation framework can proxy membership inference attack (MIA) vulnerability without training expensive shadow models. On image and tabular classification tasks, stable rank correlates positively with overall MIA success, while Log alpha-Norm correlates negatively at the low false-positive regime. These correlations are stronger than those obtained from the generalisation gap, suggesting weight spectra capture leakage information overfitting measures miss. The authors propose spectral analysis as a scalable direction for privacy auditing.

Unmasking Cloud Identities: From Behavioral Clustering to Automated Detection

Unit 42 clusters behavior of 40,000+ AWS identities from 125 cloud environments to map functional roles and enable lightweight SQL-based detection.

Palo Alto Unit 42 built an unsupervised behavioral clustering model using UMAP and HDBSCAN on AWS CloudTrail logs to map cloud identities to functional roles such as administrators, backup services, security tooling and DevOps. The study analyzed over 40,000 identities across 125 cloud environments over two months. The researchers show that heuristics extracted from the clustering map can be implemented in standard SQL, enabling role classification at scale without running a continuous ML pipeline. The methodology extends to audit logs from other cloud providers, SaaS and Kubernetes.

Privacy Failure in Split-LLM Training, The Returned Gradient Nullifies the Decoys

Researchers show split-LLM training leaks privacy via zero-valued gradients on decoy rows, exposing which activations are real despite passing forward-channel checks.

A systems-security case study of a two-node split-LLM training setup found that the returned output gradient from an Untrusted Cloud Node is exactly zero for decoy rows, revealing which rows are real. Across nine seeds, zero patterns identified real rows in 4,096 of 4,096 frames per run, and an attack on frame contents recovered 0.65 to 1.50 percentage points of extra tokens over a baseline. Both datasets passed forward-channel privacy and quality checks but failed once the returned gradient was included. Row-wise gradient clipping and noise closed the leak for roughly 0.01 nats of held-out cross-entropy, though five unmeasured attack classes remain.

Beyond the Perimeter: Building Resilience Against Cloud and SaaS Supply-Chain Attacks

ShinyHunters exploited an Oracle PeopleSoft zero-day to steal data and extort roughly 100 organizations, including the Council of Europe, for up to $2.3M.

Between May and early June 2026, the ShinyHunters group exploited a critical zero-day in Oracle PeopleSoft across about 100 organizations and 300 instances worldwide, per reports cited by The Register. Stolen records included employee and student personal data, payroll, tax, financial and health information, plus immigration and passport documents. AgentCypher.ai estimates extortion demands of $400,000 to $2.3 million per victim, typically in Bitcoin; the Council of Europe refused to pay. The article uses the incident to argue for Zero Trust, supply-chain risk management, rapid patching, encrypted distributed backups and defined recovery-time objectives.

Differential Privacy Meets Fixed Parameter Tractability: Algorithms and Lower Bounds

Theory paper combines differential privacy with fixed-parameter tractable encoders, improving approximation guarantees for combinatorial optimization and proving new lower bounds.

The paper studies combinatorial optimization under epsilon-differential privacy within the implicit encoder-decoder framework of Gupta et al. (SODA 2010), generalizing it to allow fixed-parameter tractable encoders. This circumvents approximation barriers inherent to polynomial-time algorithms and yields improved guarantees for fundamental combinatorial optimization problems. The authors establish the first representation-independent lower bounds: assuming a non-uniform variant of the Gap Exponential Time Hypothesis, no epsilon-DP encoder-decoder pair can achieve certain approximation guarantees with a subexponential-time decoder for sufficiently small epsilon. Representation-dependent lower bounds are also provided for larger epsilon.

MFA's Weakest Link: Account Recovery Is the New Attack Path

Help desk account recovery is increasingly the weakest link in MFA-protected identities, as Scattered Spider's impersonation-driven Marks & Spencer attack demonstrated.

As MFA, conditional access, and phishing-resistant factors raise the cost of direct account takeover, attackers increasingly target the recovery process, convincing service desk staff to reset passwords or re-register MFA on attacker-controlled devices. CISA, FBI, and partner advisories describe Scattered Spider posing as employees to trigger such resets; the 2025 Marks & Spencer attack began this way and led to ransomware with an estimated £300 million profit impact. Microsoft now describes Entra ID account recovery as a high-assurance process, and the article promotes Specops Secure Service Desk for verified identity workflows.

Silver Rate Is (Almost) Optimal for Gradient Descent Acceleration

New optimization theory paper proves near-optimal lower bounds for gradient descent with predetermined stepsizes, confirming silver-schedule optimality.

The paper studies the limits of accelerating gradient descent using predetermined nonnegative stepsizes in smooth convex optimization, with the key constant p_sil = log2(1 + sqrt(2)). It proves a non-anytime lower bound of Omega(n^(-p_sil - O(sqrt(log log n / log n)))) on the error achievable by any such stepsize schedule. In the anytime setting, it shows every infinite nonnegative schedule must incur error Omega(n^(-2*p_sil/(1+p_sil) - O(sqrt(log log n / log n)))) at infinitely many horizons. Combined with the silver-schedule upper bound of Altschuler and Parrilo (2025) and the anytime upper bound of Zhang et al. (2025), these results determine the optimal polynomial convergence exponents in both settings.

How Much is a Human Right Worth? ECtHR-NPD: A Benchmark for Predicting Non-Pecuniary Damage Awards

ECtHR-NPD benchmark covers 14,575 European Court of Human Rights cases for predicting non-pecuniary damage awards; LLMs struggle with zero and high awards.

Researchers introduce ECtHR-NPD, described as the first benchmark for predicting non-pecuniary damage awards at the European Court of Human Rights from case information where no statutory formula exists. It contains 14,575 cases with case-level awards in nominal euros, chronological splits, and a protocol separating target construction from model input. Evaluations covering constant predictors, gradient-boosted trees, retrieval methods, fine-tuned encoder LMs, prompted decoder LMs, and knowledge-augmented agents show sophisticated LM approaches do not consistently outperform the strongest feature-based baseline. All model families struggle to identify zero awards and to calibrate high-award predictions, with further degradation on a Challenging test view.

Windows BitLocker Flaw Lets Attackers Execute Code on Vulnerable Systems

Microsoft patched CVE-2026-69449, a heap-based buffer overflow in Windows BitLocker allowing privileged local attackers to execute code; no exploitation reported.

Microsoft disclosed CVE-2026-69449 on September 8, 2026, an Important-severity heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122) in Windows BitLocker with a CVSS 3.1 base score of 6.7. The attack vector is local (AV:L) with high privileges required, so exploitation needs privileged local access rather than remote access over the internet. Microsoft, as assigned CNA, has not reported public exploitation, and administrators are urged to inventory BitLocker-enabled systems and apply updates. Interim mitigations include least-privilege access, limiting administrative rights, and monitoring for unexpected elevated process activity.

Cascading Gradient Inversion via LT-Code Inspired Peeling in Federated Learning

New gradient inversion attacks tied to erasure-coding theory recover 94–100% of ImageNet batches, showing federated learning privacy leakage is underestimated.

The paper connects gradient inversion in federated learning to erasure-correcting code theory, constructing analytic attacks that exceed previously known recovery bounds. The attacks recover batches exactly, with every sample's label, from a single FedSGD round, and certify each recovery without ground-truth data. On eight image and tabular benchmarks, even a passive attacker observing an honestly trained network recovers 94–100% of ImageNet batches up to size 128, and more than 90% actively at batch sizes of several hundred. The authors conclude that federated learning's privacy leakage has been underestimated.

LiteLLM Flaws Let Attackers Execute Code as Root and Steal Cloud Credentials

Wiz disclosed LiteLLM flaws including CVE-2026-59822 MCP auth bypass, now in CISA KEV, enabling root RCE and AWS credential theft from exposed gateways.

Wiz researchers disclosed weaknesses in the open-source LiteLLM AI gateway: CVE-2026-59821 allows authenticated administrators to execute code as root via the Custom Code Guardrails feature, while CVE-2026-59822 is an MCP authentication bypass where a meaningless Bearer token establishes a valid session. The MCP bypass was observed in the wild through Wiz honeypots and added to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on September 2. A scan of 3,074 internet-facing instances found 294 (9.6%) accepting the default master key sk-1234 or lacking authentication. Fixes shipped in LiteLLM 1.82.0 (guardrail hardening) and 1.84.0 (MCP bypass); exposed instances can leak provider API keys and temporary AWS IAM credentials via the pass-through feature and metadata service, with a related config-check issue tracked as CVE-2026-35029.

Subgroup Membership Inference Audits of Differentially Private Synthetic Text

Audits of 32 differentially private synthetic-text releases show subgroup membership leakage is concentrated in few records and systematically underestimated by average-case attacks.

The paper defines a subgroup-targeted membership inference game in which the target pool is an explicit parameter, to audit residual leakage in differentially private synthetic text releases. The audit instantiates 32 proxies across four datasets, three generators (DP-SGD fine-tuning, API-based prompting, and activation steering), and five privacy budgets. DP substantially reduces average leakage at every budget, but remaining leakage is concentrated: roughly a tenth of records carries about 40% of it, and the noise removes more measured leakage from random records than from high-risk ones. Which records leak depends on the release mechanism, so record-level risk cannot be assessed independently of the release.

Why "Shady AI" is Security's Next Big Governance Problem

Opinion piece argues approved-but-ungoverned AI agent use ('shady AI') is a growing enterprise risk, citing a Meta Sev 1 data-exposure incident.

In March 2026, an approved AI agent at Meta posted a forum answer publicly, exposing sensitive company and user data to unauthorized employees for over two hours and triggering a Sev 1 incident. The author contrasts shadow AI (unapproved tools) with 'shady AI' (approved tools used in unapproved or unanticipated ways), arguing the latter is harder to govern because it operates inside the organization's visibility. A July 2026 SANS survey found 76% of security teams now have a role in governing enterprise AI. The piece recommends governance-by-default environments with built-in permissions, access controls, and monitoring rather than policy and training alone.

Safety for Whom? Boundary-Aware Self-Distillation for Controlled LLM Safety Refusal

A self-distillation safety framework tunes narrow-boundary refusals in Qwen3-8B, raising target-domain refusal to 84.75% while cutting over-refusal from 15.20% to 5.20%.

The paper formulates narrow-boundary safety, where deployments need refusals within specific topics rather than whole subjects, and proposes an offline self-generated framework with controlled topic generation, escalating retries, and harmful-benign boundary pairs. On political persuasion with Qwen3-8B, the method raised target-domain refusal from 9.47% to 84.75% and cut the mean unsafe-response rate across three broader benchmarks from 26.26% to 0.14%. Verified target-model responses reduced over-refusal from 15.20% to 5.20%, and boundary-pair data cut comply-side over-refusal on held-out pairs from 32.94% to 4.16%. Results show data composition controls the safety-usability trade-off and alignment should be evaluated on both sides of the refusal boundary.

What 90 days and a small budget can buy in AI agent security

Versa Field CISO details hidden costs of self-hosting open-weight models and a 90-day AI agent security plan of inventory, blast-radius reduction and testing.

In a Help Net Security interview, Prasad Tharippala, Field CISO at Versa, argues running open-weight models in-house improves control but shifts hardening, patching, access control, monitoring and incident response onto the buyer, with underestimated costs in GPU infrastructure, licensing review, EU AI Act compliance and scarce AI/ML security skills. On red-teaming AI agents, he recommends testing prompt injection, indirect injection, excessive permissions, data leakage, memory and RAG poisoning, malicious tool outputs, cross-agent trust abuse and infrastructure attack paths, mapped to OWASP agentic guidance and MITRE ATLAS. He highlights the handoff between chained agents as a major risk zone and stresses exercising human approval, shutdown and rollback controls under test conditions. For teams with 90 days and small budgets, he ranks inventory, blast radius reduction and ongoing testing as the priority order.

Rare Not Random Using Token Efficiency for Secrets Scanning

Researcher proposes token efficiency (string length divided by BPE token count) as a better post-regex filter than entropy for secrets scanning, validated on CredData.

The post explores whether Byte-Pair Encoding tokenization can replace Shannon entropy as the primary filter for candidate secrets captured by regex in tools like Gitleaks. It defines 'token efficiency' as string length divided by token count under the cl100k_base tokenizer; secret-like strings such as GitHub tokens tokenize into many small tokens and score low, while natural text scores high. Evaluating labeled secrets from the CredData dataset shows a usable separation, with roughly 2.5 suggested as a minimum cutoff versus Gitleaks' 3.5 entropy threshold. The technique is positioned as a post-regex filtering step rather than a standalone detector.
