Cisco FMC bugs exploited by nation-state and ransomware actors (CVE-2026-20079, CVE-2026-20316)

Cisco Talos confirms nation-state (Sandworm) and ransomware (Qilin) actors actively exploit CVE-2026-20079 and CVE-2026-20316 in Secure Firewall Management Center.

CVE-2026-20079 is a critical unauthenticated authentication bypass in the FMC web interface allowing root-level script and command execution via crafted HTTP requests; CVE-2026-20316 stems from static hard-coded credentials enabling unauthenticated logins. Cisco Talos detailed three intrusion clusters: web shell and JAR deployment for credential theft, a Sandworm-attributed reverse shell and credential-harvesting implant, and a suspected Qilin ransomware operator chain. Cisco urges immediate hotfixes ahead of a comprehensive hardening release the week of September 16, or taking the FMC management interface offline.

Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center Software Authentication Bypass Vulnerability

Cisco warns of a critical authentication bypass in Secure Firewall Management Center that lets unauthenticated attackers execute scripts and obtain root access.

A vulnerability in the web interface of Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC) Software allows an unauthenticated, remote attacker to bypass authentication and execute script files on an affected device to obtain root access to the underlying operating system. The flaw stems from an improper system process created at boot time and is triggered via crafted HTTP requests. If the FMC management interface does not have public internet access, the attack surface is limited.

ZDI-26-709: Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center CommandSinkRmi Deserialization of Untrusted Data Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

ZDI disclosed CVE-2026-20242, an unauthenticated deserialization flaw in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center enabling remote code execution (CVSS 8.1).

ZDI published advisory ZDI-26-709 describing deserialization of untrusted data in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center's CommandSinkRmi component, tracked as CVE-2026-20242 with CVSS 8.1. Remote attackers can execute arbitrary code on affected installations without authentication. The advisory does not indicate whether exploitation has been observed in the wild.

Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center Software Static Credential Vulnerability

Cisco warns of static low-privileged credentials in Secure Firewall Management Center's web interface, letting unauthenticated remote attackers log in and access sensitive data.

Cisco disclosed a vulnerability in the web interface of Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC) Software caused by the presence of static credentials for a low-privileged account. An unauthenticated remote attacker could log in to an affected device using the static account and access sensitive data within impacted systems. The attack surface is reduced when the FMC management interface does not have public internet access.

Cisco patches Secure Email Gateway zero-day exploited in attacks

Cisco patches actively exploited Secure Email Gateway zero-day CVE-2026-76461 enabling unauthenticated root command execution; CISA adds it to KEV.

Cisco disclosed that a critical zero-day (CVE-2026-76461) in the email parsing logic of AsyncOS for Secure Email Gateway is being actively exploited, allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL statements that lead to root-level command execution on virtual and physical appliances. CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog and ordered federal agencies to patch within three days, by September 17. Cisco also patched four other critical SEG/SEWM vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-76440, CVE-2026-76441, CVE-2026-20353, CVE-2026-76443) with no evidence of exploitation, and shared IOCs including suspicious SQL statements in mail_logs.

Root RCE Zero-Day in Cisco Secure Email Gateway Under Active Exploitation

Cisco warns CVE-2026-76461 (CVSS 9.8), an unauthenticated root RCE in Secure Email Gateway AsyncOS, is actively exploited in the wild.

Cisco confirmed that CVE-2026-76461, a CVSS 9.8 email-parsing flaw in Secure Email Gateway AsyncOS, is being exploited in the wild since September 2026, allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges via crafted emails containing malicious SQL statements. Cyclops Blink Evolves Into x86-64 Linux Implant With Packet Sniffing and Internal Network Scanning

Sophos uncovers a new x86-64 Cyclops Blink Linux implant with packet sniffing and internal network scanning on compromised Cisco FMC appliances.

Sophos identified a 64-bit Linux Cyclops Blink implant in August on compromised Cisco Firewall Management Center devices, persisting via SysV init scripts and masquerading as the process 'kworker01'. The modular malware runs five child processes for reconnaissance, file transfer, scanning, packet capture, and persistence, and beacons hourly over outbound TLS to hardcoded C2 89.34.96.56 on ports 43856 and 49172. The family was previously tied to Russian-linked Sandworm activity on WatchGuard appliances, though Sophos treats 2026 attribution cautiously. The packet-capture module applies configurable filters to retain credentials, cookies, and authentication tokens from raw Ethernet traffic.

Organizations Warned of Cisco Secure FMC Exploitation

Cisco and CISA warn that critical FMC authentication bypass CVE-2026-20079 is actively exploited; CISA added it to the KEV catalog with a September 12 deadline.

Cisco and CISA flagged active exploitation of CVE-2026-20079, a critical authentication bypass in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center allowing remote, unauthenticated attackers to run malicious scripts and gain root access via crafted HTTP requests. Cisco confirms CVE-2026-20079 Secure FMC flaw exploited in attacks

Cisco confirmed active exploitation of CVE-2026-20079, a CVSS 10.0 authentication bypass enabling unauthenticated root command execution in Secure FMC; CISA added it to KEV.

Cisco confirmed in August 2026 that CVE-2026-20079 (CVSS 10.0), an unauthenticated authentication bypass in Secure Firewall Management Center, is being actively exploited, allowing remote attackers to execute scripts and commands as root via crafted HTTP requests to the web interface. CISA added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, ordering federal civilian agencies to patch by September 12, 2026. AI made software development unrecognizable. Is cybersecurity next?

Opinion piece argues AI-driven shifts that transformed software development—agent-run SOCs, autonomous triage—will soon reshape cybersecurity operations and staffing.

A CSO Online analysis notes Google Cloud research found 90% of developers already use AI, while a March 2026 Federal Reserve paper found coder employment growth fell roughly 3% since ChatGPT's arrival. Gartner predicts 80% of organizations will run smaller, AI-augmented engineering teams by 2030. Security leaders from Contrast Security, Menlo Security and the Cloud Security Alliance expect agent-run SOCs, machine-speed containment and abundant vulnerability discovery, but caution that absorption capacity and autonomous production-environment validation remain bottlenecks.

Elastic Security Labs argues 2026 is the practical inflection point for agentic AI SOCs, noting nearly two-thirds of organizations are experimenting with AI agents while fewer than one in four have production deployments. The piece outlines operational challenges and recommendations: treat agents as non-human identities with least-privilege tool access, version-control system prompts as code, deploy unified agents with on-demand task packages, and enforce per-agent budgets and rate limits. It stresses explainability via RAG and transparent reasoning traces so analysts can verify and override autonomous decisions.
