Related campaigns used QR-code invoice phishing leading to fake OneDrive pages, Phantom Stealer sold as a penetration testing tool with VBScript-to-PowerShell steganographic loaders, and image-hidden payloads delivering XWorm, PureLogs Stealer, and Formbook; a perceptual-hash VirusTotal search found about 400 distinct rigged images.

Explicitly controlling the specialist's distributional drift systematically shifts both teacher and distilled student along a controllable trade-off between domain precision and general-capability retention across chemistry, physics, and multilingual settings, even across divergent model families.

A three-term reward (groundedness 0.6, diversity 0.2 via Vendi Score, alignment 0.2) prevents paraphrastic collapse and reward hacking during training. On the Polyvore dataset, Gemma3-4B R4T-FOLM averaged 49.1 versus 40.9 for Best-of-N, and the diffusion retriever cut fan-out latency from 1.46s to 0.07s at batch size 8, a consistent 12x-20x speedup over autoregressive methods.

The AI data center e-waste problem is huge — and getting bigger

The nonprofit Basel Action Network (BAN) published a report arguing AI e-waste has been vastly underestimated because it counts all data center infrastructure, not just servers and GPUs. BAN projects 8.6-13.1 million metric tons of AI-related equipment retired annually, totaling 395-617 million metric tons between 2025 and 2050, based on roughly 70,000 tons per gigawatt and a projected 219GW of capacity by 2030. Less than a quarter of the 68.3 million tons of e-waste generated yearly worldwide is formally collected and recycled, with informal disposal exposing workers and children to toxins like lead and chromium.

SEEK: Secure and Efficient Encrypted Keyword Search For Privacy-Preserving Messaging Protocols

Researchers propose SEEK, a homomorphic-encryption plus 2PC protocol for encrypted keyword search that hides keywords while detecting matches.

SEEK partitions messages into ciphertext fragments with minimum sufficient overlap and homomorphically correlates them using encrypted keyword trapdoors, combined with 2PC-based selected decoding, blinded zero testing, and secure aggregation. It reduces sender-side encryption and upload overhead by up to two orders of magnitude over state-of-the-art baselines and computes correlations up to 5.47x faster, revealing only the keyword presence bit while hiding contents, counts, and locations. A prototype achieves 1.92 seconds online computation per search on a weekly messaging history and is realized as a web and cross-platform mobile application.

DDRop Attack Forces Intel TDX Confidential VMs Into Debug Mode and Exposes Memory

KU Leuven and ETH Zurich researchers released DDRop PoC hardware that forces Intel TDX confidential VMs into debug mode and exposes plaintext memory.

Researchers from KU Leuven, ETH Zurich, Google, and Durham University published proof-of-concept code, hardware designs, and firmware for DDRop, a DDR5 interposer that injects parity errors to drop selected cache-line writebacks. Because Intel TDX, Intel Scalable SGX, and AMD SEV-SNP lack per-line cryptographic freshness, processors decrypt and accept stale DRAM contents as current state. The PoC flips a victim's ATTRIBUTES.DEBUG flag to enable TDX debug mode, then copies victim memory in plaintext and can forge attestation reports. Affected environments include Intel 5th- and 6th-generation Xeon Scalable with TDX; Intel says the attack falls outside its cloud-computing threat model.

Researchers from KU Leuven, ETH Zurich, Durham University, and Google demonstrated DDRop, a hardware interposer costing under $200 that corrupts DDR5 bus commands to silently drop writes to encrypted memory, enabling replay attacks on confidential VMs. Because scalable memory encryption lacks freshness checks, protected VMs keep computing on stale attacker-selected data; on an Intel TDX server the attack forces debug mode for plaintext memory reads or forges attestation reports, succeeding in under two minutes without crashing. Intel and AMD both called the attack out of scope for their cloud threat models, with no mitigation planned, and proposed cache line versioning appears still vulnerable. The full interposer design is being released as open-source hardware.

In one Taiwanese environment the actor reached root-level access across a three-node Proxmox cluster, targeting defense, elections, energy, aerospace, telecom, government, and research sectors.
