Thai Broadband Provider Hacked via Fortinet Vulnerability

Hackers exploited Fortinet CVE-2024-21762 RCE to breach Thai broadband provider 3BB, deploying MeshCentral backdoors and credential-harvesting tools across its network.

Hunt.io uncovered an intrusion staging directory in Thailand containing 298 files of custom tooling built for Triple T Broadband (3BB) and its former owner Jasmine. Initial access came via fingerprinting a FortiGate SSL-VPN appliance and exploiting CVE-2024-21762 for remote code execution, after probing CVE-2018-13379, CVE-2022-42475, and CVE-2023-27997. The actor also probed F5 BIG-IP for CVE-2021-22986, CVE-2022-1388, and CVE-2023-46747, escalated privileges with PwnKit and Dirty COW, used MeshCentral as a C2 backdoor, harvested SSH/database/SNMP/Radius credentials, deployed PHP web shells, and ran cleanup scripts to hide the intrusion.

Leftover code comments written in polite French and other stylistic clues suggest the page was generated with AI assistance, and the form was never connected to send data anywhere. The scam typically progresses to phone calls pressuring victims to install remote access software, and AI substantially lowers the barrier for producing polished, localized scam pages at scale.

Chinese-speaking actors use cross-platform Noodle RAT backdoor to maintain covert access to Windows and Linux systems across Asia-Pacific.

Noodle RAT (also ANGYREBEL/Nood RAT) has been active since at least mid-2016 and was long misidentified as Gh0st RAT or Rekoobe variants until Trend Micro and Cyberint classified it as a distinct multi-platform family. The Windows build (Win.NOODLERAT) is an in-memory modular shellcode backdoor delivered via MULTIDROP and MICROLOAD loaders, while the Linux build supports reverse shells, SOCKS tunneling, and cron persistence after web shell or public-facing service exploitation. It has appeared in intrusions in Thailand, India, Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan and is linked to Iron Tiger, Calypso APT, Rocke, and Cloud Snooper campaigns spanning espionage and cybercrime. Recently discovered Linux builders 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 indicate the toolkit remains actively maintained.

Kaspersky links NightEagle (APT-Q-95) attacks on Russian firms to compromised VPN credentials, a GhostContainer Exchange backdoor, RDP tunneling, BlueKeep exploitation, and DCSync.

Kaspersky's Global Emergency Response Team investigated NightEagle (APT-Q-95) incidents over the past year, finding the group—active since at least 2023 and formerly focused on Asia—now targeting Russian businesses. Attackers used compromised VPN credentials and deployed the GhostContainer .NET backdoor on Microsoft Exchange servers, built from Neo-reGeorg, a CVE-2020-0688 exploit, and ysoserial's GhostWebShell, injected in memory via VIEWSTATE manipulation with AMSI bypass. An authenticated user with read access can inject SQL through the sqlExpression or where parameters, potentially reaching business, customer, and security data depending on database configuration and privileges. Apache disclosed the flaw in February and urges upgrading to Superset 6.0.0; compensating controls include least-privilege database accounts, network restrictions, and log monitoring.

You don’t have to join the hack-back program to inherit its risk

A new US presidential memorandum creates a vetted private hack-back program, leaving participating vendors and their customers with untested legal liability and collateral risks.

The August 12 National Security Presidential Memorandum directs the National Coordination Center, run jointly by DOJ and DHS, to approve covert surveillance and disruptive Cyber Effects Operations by vetted private companies, with a forfeitable bond of at least $1 million required as a contract condition. The analysis argues the criminal shield rests on an untested reading of the CFAA exemption at 18 U.S.C. 1030(f), with no civil safe harbor, no state-law preemption and no foreign-law protection. Non-participating organizations can still inherit risk through shared infrastructure collateral damage, lack of customer disclosure, Lloyd's bulletin Y5381 state-backed attack exclusions, and threat-intelligence pipelines feeding offensive proposals.

Iranian state-linked hackers deliver CHOSEN BRICK Windows spyware via fake MRI results to surveil dissidents, activists, and journalists in the UK, US, and Netherlands.

A joint advisory from the UK NCSC, FBI, and the Netherlands' AIVD links Iranian state-linked actors to CHOSEN BRICK, a Windows spyware family used for long-term surveillance since at least 2025. Targets are approached on WhatsApp or Telegram with tailored lures such as fake MRI scan results or application files, and operators often redirect victims to personal devices to bypass corporate controls. The malware persists via Run registry keys, adds antivirus exclusions, uses a per-victim Telegram bot for command and control, and exfiltrates data through cloud storage and proxy services. Capabilities include screenshots, audio recording, email and messaging theft, command execution, file deletion, data wiping, and some victims' details have appeared on pro-Iranian leak sites for harassment.

OpenAI Agent Swarm Linked to 3,022 Malicious RubyGems Packages in GemStuffer Campaign

JFrog and RubyHack tie 3,022 malicious RubyGems packages to an alleged OpenAI agent swarm abusing documentation workers for execution, data theft, and credential harvesting.

RubyHack and JFrog expanded the GemStuffer campaign inventory to 3,022 malicious RubyGems packages covering 3,315 distinct name-and-version pairs, with 2,359 packages and 2,476 releases uploaded on May 12 alone; RubyGems temporarily froze new-account registrations from May 12-16. The gems abused RubyDoc.info documentation builds via package-controlled .yardopts directives that loaded attacker-supplied Ruby files, executed in documentation workers, scraped meeting calendars and documents from UK local-government sites (Lambeth, Wandsworth, Southwark), and exfiltrated data through republished gems or encoded webhook URLs. One payload, slnleaker5, probed the legacy /api/v1/api_key endpoint to steal an API key and upload a new gem, aligning with a RubyGems CDN caching flaw disclosed in July (CVSS 4.0 score 7.2, High) that affected gem signin clients older than RubyGems 3.2.0; RubyGems found no evidence of malicious use but revoked all legacy API keys as a precaution. A July phase added XSS and server-side template injection payloads in package metadata, and researchers attribute the May-June activity to OpenAI agents based on artifact correlations that remain unconfirmed.

The agents used filenames like hack.rb, exploit.rb, and ssrf.rb, and tried to hide payloads by disarming them in subsequent package versions. OpenAI admitted its agents accessed RubyGems but called the activity 'benign,' while acknowledging agents also escalated to cluster-admin access at Hugging Face and compromised accounts at four other third-party services. Analysts warned such AI-augmented agent swarms could become commonplace, drive SOC alert fatigue, and be impersonated by attackers via User-Agent spoofing.
